Scum Kath vs Soontir Fel - Who Blinks First?

By FTS Gecko, in X-Wing Battle Reports

Had a couple of enjoyable games of X-Wing tonight, but the second descended into hilarity and near madness when the two ships in the title ended up facing off one-on-one.

A little background, first. I was fielding a Scum double Firespray list:

Kath Scarlett - Push the Limit, Recon Specialist, Engine Upgrade

Emon Azzameen - Heavy Laser Cannon, Inertial Dampeners, Outlaw Tech, Andrasta and 2 x Proximity Mines

My long time bitter rival (Ashey) lined up with

Delta Squadron Pilot - Ion Cannon

Delta Squadron Pilot - Flechette Cannon

Soontir Fel - Push the Limit, Royal Guard Title, Autothrusters, Stealth Device

The opening exchange was fast andbrutal:

Round two saw the Baron out of arc and the two Fiesprays combine to take down the Flechette Defender in one volley. The remaining Defender dropped an ion token on Emon, when it would have done 3 damage with it's regular attack.

Round three saw Emon Proximity Mine the remaining Defender, stripping all three of it's shields (!) before getting his own shields stripped by Soontir and another Ion Cannon shot. Again, the Defender would have done three damage using it's regular attack, but Emon ended up ioned.

Round 4 saw the ioned Emon bump the K-turning Defender, with Range 1 Soontir causing him serious pain for no return. Kath finished off the Defender, however.

Round 5 and Emon chugged forward one again - this time through choice - and drop the Proximity Mine on Soontir for wo Damage. Soontir finished Emon off.

This left Soontir Fel with one Hull point remaining, against a full health Kath Scarlett.

Approximately 15 rounds later, Soontir won.

Kudos to Ashley, who flew Soontir pretty much perfectly, but Kath simply could not get the finishing blow. At least three times she scored four hits through her rear arc, each time Soontir shrugged it off. In return, Soontir patiently chipped a hull point off here and there, flying agressively to get into range one if he could also avoid my auxillary arc, firing from range three if he couldn't.

Even doubling up Target Lock and Focus didn't help - even scoring four hits I needed the turtled up Soontir to whiff on four of his five dice at range 3 to cause the single point of damage I needed, and it didn't happen. Once I saw three green blanks, a focus and an evade, but that was as close as it got.

Eventually, once Kath was down to two hull points, Soontir moved in for the kill. Range one, four dice, four hits and the Baron flew home victorious.

The moral of the story?

Next time around, Kath takes Gunner.

Nice report. It's always frustrating to try and finish off such an evasive ship, especially when you only have one ship left. I've been in that boat myself, many times.

Of course, every time I wind up with the dodgy ship, I whiff on all my dodge dice and blow up.

This was a great battle, was hilarious to take part in. This is the kind of thing you only ever see at friendly games. Had we had been in a tournament setting, Soontir would have ran out of time to chip Kath down and I would have lost.

Still I probably wouldn't take two Delta Defenders to a tournament, well not until the Ion engine card is released.

Great game Geko

Aye, was good fun! Once again though, amazing how things can change around so quickly in this game - turn 3 with one Delta down and the other one having it's shields dropped by a Proximity Mine before the shooting starts, could have easily thought it was all over!

and that's why I run feedback arrays on my scum firesprays. That way they can't do range 1 even outside your arc without risking a damage. Plus since it works when bumping, you can try to move in a spot so they crash into you and then die.

Yep, Feedback Arrays would have made a HUGE difference in that game, especially with Soontir just needing that one last finishing touch for so long. Much more so than Emon's Inertial Dampners and Outlaw Tech, which never got used once. Definitely one to bear in mind for future. Gunner seems a must as well, for both ships really - it was nice to double up on focus tokens with Kath, but overall I think the second attack would have proved much more useful.
