New-ish and have psyker questions.

By JayDako, in Dark Heresy Rules Questions

So I have been playing a little bit now and I have some things I am curious about. For starters, is it just me or does the sunburst power not actually do what it says it does? It claims to be a nova power but the psychic storm rules counter it entirely. It is like it would have been better if it had a blast quality that emanated out from you.

I am playing a Voidborn, Adeptus Astra Telepathica, Mystic psyker by the way as my very first character.

Another is on things like aiming and called shot and single attacks. I'm pretty sure you can not use these with psyker attack powers since they specifically say WS or BS on them. Am I correct?

After a break and it is time for us to do off screen stuff like requisition supplies, I can never figure out what gear to get. I had a data slate, but gave it to our seeker. I got a picto..whatever it is called the camera thing and gave it to the seeker too. At this point the only gear I have is a whip, a laspistol, imperial guard flak armour, cerebral armour, a medi-kit, and a force sword I got from infiltrating a group of psyker supremacists and playing along with them, though it pushed be up to 21 corruption to do so. Any suggestions on what I should try to get? My influence score is really low and I don't know much about the availability system and modifiers to that.

I currently have PR4, telepathic link, erasure, Dominate, telekinetic control, manipulate flame, spontaneous combustion, and Molten beam. I have 600 unspent xp and have not really bought any talents or skills outside of a point of medicae and jaded, I think. I feel like I should save up and get PR5, then inferno, then hallucination and then work on talents and skills. Does that seem stupid? I am also pretty much the only guy on the team that is being subtle, but the others are starting to do that now.

Yeah, sunburst's description doesn't really line up with its rules. Oh well.

You are correct, you cannot use called shots or aim actions with psychic powers and the standard attack action bonus doesn't apply as it is a focus power action not a standard attack action. You do get a bonus as long as you have your psy focus though so don't forget that and the test is easier if you are casting at a lower psy rating.

What equipment you should get really depends on what your character has for skills and what would be useful to the group. If your influence is bad though there might not be a whole you can get anyway. If you have some lore skills scribe-tines could be nice. If you have tech use an auspex could be helpful.

I would focus on some skills and talents first. You already have a lot of psy powers and PR5 is expensive and PR4 is still respectable. It can also be nice to have abilities you can use that don't risk tearing a hole in reality.
If you are the group's primary medic I would suggest superior chirurgeon. You could also work on getting adamantium faith or some of the mental defense or phenomenon protection talents. As a mystic knowledge skills are pretty cheap as is the infused knowledge talent.

Also don't forget that negative modifiers like darkness/fog/mist/shadow/smoke/... don't apply to you either. You must be "aware" of your target's whereabouts and the range is determined by the Psychic power itself. I think the Warp Sense talent goes very nicely with this, except against Untouchables. :)

You sound like a combat focused Psyker. Grab some combat talents. Swift Attack, Sound Constitution, put some exp into parry, go mash people in the face with your force sword. Crushing Blow, Step Aside.

Remember, your psyker powers are useful, but you're not any worse than anyone else at other "normal" things. Grab a nice gun, you can use it instead of risking phenomena on Molten Beam. Pick up some better armor.

Grab some mental defense talents, pick up some minor utility powers out of Enemies Within.

Snag a higher quality med-kit.

Snag a few firebombs (super easy to get) to complement your manipulate flame power.

You mentioned you're the only one being subtle (up until now), but you've only got Imperial Flak Armor. That's not very subtle.

As for Sunburst, I'd houserule it to be a PBAoE (an AoE centered on you). Effectively, a Psychic Blast with limited targetting options. Would be extremely powerful, if your allies are extremely far away. I'd discuss with your GM.

or, I'd houseful it as Storm, but it automatically selects the nearest targets up to your DoS. max 1 hit per target

Yeah we kinda did a whole roll down the line type character building. My perception is 24.

I looked over something in character creation. While my group says being a mystic lets you start with the psyker advance for free, which I accepted, I don't see where it specifically says that. Can someone point it out or did FFG decide to be vague and make you interpret it, thus making me flip through this book with a terrible binding that keeps popping when I open it flat, thus making me scared to read it.

It's on page 70 in the mystic special rules box. It's the mystic role bonus and is pretty plainly stated that they start with the psyker elite advance. No other class pays for its role bonus or anything else provided by their role, homeworld or background so their is no reason to think mystic would have to pay xp for it.

Alright because in what I read, and I guess I missed it, it meant psyker as an aptitude.

It says on page 70 "A mystic character starts the game with the Psyker elite advance ", emphasis mine.

Yup, I see it now. Herp Derp on my end.
