How far out does a firing arc extend?

By Citizensmith, in X-Wing Rules Questions

This came up as a side point on another rules question.

Is a firing arc unlimited? If you start the game backed into a corner do you have almost the entire board in arc, distance is irrelevant.

Or,

Is firing arc defined by the boundry lines on your card and an arc between them at your maximum firing range (3 for most ships, 5 for epic). For instance, if you can't fire at something because it is at range 3.5 then it isn't in your firing arc.

And,

Has there been a difinitive statement on this somewhere?

Thanks

Most references to firing arcs are limited by the range of the weapon in question. For example, during the Combat phase "each ship may perform one attack

against one enemy ship that is inside its firing arc and within range."

This by default would limit the firing arc to range 3 in most cases, or range 5 for huge ships, but I've not yet seen any absolute limit on a firing arc for range.

Do you have something in mind that would allow some kind of interaction beyond normal weapon ranges?

Second this. What tricks do you see?

Core rules P 10:

An enemy ship is inside the active ship’s firing arc if any part of the enemy ship’s base falls inside the angle defined by the wedge shape (see “Firing Arc and Range Example” on page 11).

So no range restriction, only angle.

The way that a range three turret interacts with Opportunist and Backstabber are the only things that I can think of that are currently in the game where this makes a difference. Once the Twin Laser Turret is available it will also matter for Kavil and R3-A2. A ship could be at range three of the turret but be in arc beyond it.

I agreed that arc is not limited by range.

It's like a big strategic secret where we dont post why we are asking, lol

E'than Ewing would be one that would matter if its unlimited range on just the arc.

Edit: never mind it states range 1-3

I dunno, we don't have any tools in the (standard) game that measure beyond Range 3, and I can't see "eyeballin' it" as a reliable method.

Do we even have any abilities that rely on in/out-of-arc but don't specify range?

Sorry yeah, this was triggered by a question along the lines of what WWHSD was talking about. For a turret, what happens when something is inside range 3 out of arc, but outside range 3 in arc. If the inside arc bit is out of firing range, is it in a ships firing arc?

Looks like the general consensus is probably yes, but there is no authoritative answer.

The original post was here https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/index.php?/topic/178899-kavil-whats-in-and-out-of-arc/ but I wanted to try and avoid derailing it.

The definition of a ship' firing arc as given in the rulebook is the "angle from which the ship's weapons can fire" and that a target is in arc if any part of the target falls within the angle defined by the wedge on the ship token. Angles don't have distances, just degrees. Without additional rules limiting the distance the arc extends there is nothing that limits it. That is what range measurements are for.

I would argue that the ship HAS to be both within range AND arc. Meeting only one of these conditions does not suffice.

consider a ship right at the edge of Range 3, at the edge of the fire arc. The nearest corner of the enemy base is just barely within 3 so it's in range for a turret. However, the only part of the ship in arc is the tip of a corner- which is outside range 3 if you were measuring from within the front arc.

Does the turret gain the benifit of a card that needs someone to be in the front arc? It's in the front arc and also in range, but not tracing the same line to do so.

The crazy amount of "SHOW ME WHERE IT SAYZ THAT!!!11", or its inverse, that's been showing up lately for crazy questions is actually getting annoying.

Srsly.
