Reasons to keep clamshells and boxes?

By Earthworm, in X-Wing

I've held on to all of the clear plastic clamshells that all my ships came in, as well as the thin cardboard boxes that the larger ships. I don't use them for storage anymore (I make my own boxes for each ship)

Is there any reason I should keep either of these? Any cool projects people have done with them?

Alternately, anybody in the Seattle area want them? I'll be at the Regionals in Tacoma.

I saved some of the blisters for the more fragile ships. For example, I have them for my Starvipers, and in my Plano box I keep the YT-1300 in the blister.

Also, if there's any possibility of you selling and shipping your mini's, having the blisters is helpful.

I used mine as templates to cut out foam, I wanted it a little oversized so I just trimmed the plastic to get it where I wanted it. Works well. I've since threw out the majority but like the guy above me said, it's useful for the fragile ships

I kept all of mine to warn me off buying too much stuff. It's not really worked out so well in that regard.

I agree with Cody that keeping some of them are useful if you need to sell/ship your minis. Also, if you ever have movers pack up your stuff to ship it out, it helps, unless you can hand carry your collection. The clamshells are pretty unwieldy though, and I have already gotten rid of most of mine.

Another cool thing I started using the clamshells for is for storage. I store all of my ships on their bases. I have modified the bases by painting the underside of the base and super glued 1/2" washers on the bottom. I did this to give the ships some weight and not tip over as easily.

Anyway, because of this I have a multi-layer snapware case (one layer for each faction, one for epic ships, and one for misc/cards/missions) where I have installed an adhesive magnetic floor. All of my ships stick to the floor because of the washers.

I took this a step further recently by trying to repurpose the small ship clamshells. I installed a flatter and wider washer on the bottom of the clamshell and put one on each layer. I can now put all of my small/large base pilot chits not currently installed into the clamshell for each layer. Previously I had them all in their own bags and on their own layers, but now each specific faction has their own so I do not have to go digging through the different layers of my system.

I also started using the same modified clamshell for my tournament box. I store all of the necessary tokens in a dice bag but during the tournament I dump them out into the clam shell. The main purpose of this is when I have to move from table to table, I can scoop all of my tokens and drop them in the clamshell. I previously put each one back in my storage in their individual section. This was far too time consuming for where I play in tournaments. Most of my games go to time, so I had to come up with a better way to do business.

Again, the tournament clamshell has a washer on the bottom so it magnetizes to my tournament box lid and the inside of my box, so it does not move around. I wanted to try and use an old Altoid tin for the tournament tokens because the container is fully metal, but I do not think I could fit all of my tokens/dice in there.

Also, I saved a lot of the art work cardboard from the larger ships from the last few waves (cut them up to where they are all flat). I am not quite sure how I will use them yet, but I will find them a purpose!

If any of you have had other great ideas for repurposing the clamshells or blisters, please let me know!

I use the blisters of my large ships as I have a carrying case that fits the large ships and the blisters holds them securely so they are rattle around.

Also I use my starviper blister.

I REALLY wish I had thought to keep my holders. Because I use a the this thing. And it just looks and works much better if you have the holders to put into all those little compartments.

Sadly, I didn't. And now I regret it. They all just sit in their compartments and rattle around.

It's still a really good fit, but just not the same.

I haven't kept any. I have my ships in Plano boxes. The paint jobs on the ship's is pretty good and good enough to not rub off. I have each X-wing standing on its engines in seperate slots. Like X-wings, 2 E-wings then 2 Z-95s in 2 slot since they're smaller. Interceptors are stacked 2 per slot on end facing each other. 3 Bombers on end in a slot. 7 TIE Fighters staggered in a longer slot. 2 Defenders and 1 Phantom on end in a slot. Most other ships droped together where they can fit. In 1 double slot I have 5 A-wing dumped, 3 of which are Green Squadron repaints.

Only ships to really take care with as far a being fragile are the X & B-wing and the Zs because of the skinny cannons that could break. Everything else is pretty solid.

I don't want them, but I'll see you at Regionals!

Man, too bad I'm not in Seattle. I'm looking for an Y and 2 Z blisters because I don't want to hang onto the Most Wanted Blister (that thing is hideously huge).

I kept mine and use them for storage. My core box is still full of the original content. Each token type is individually bagged in zip lock bags, along with faction specific cards. I only play casual at home so not much need to transport them everywhere.

Having said that, I'm moving back to my home country and will definitely consider alternate storage solutions. Any photos of your own storage solutions will definitely help.

I loved this idea posted by DarthEnderX above:
