Mad Speculation, based on "Homecoming" Side Quest card

By LeighPouse, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Ok so you'll have to bear with me for this as this is a lot of speculation about future expansions and what they could contain based on the "Homecoming" Side Quest and Luke Skywalker himself.

So first of all we know that the time period of this campaign is 3, the Homecoming Side Quest can only be played during time periods 3-4. This makes me assume a couple of things, about Luke Skywalker and the nature of time period 4.

Ok, so we also know that this game takes place post the events at the end of Episode 4, placing it between the battle of Yavin (obviously :P ) and the battle of Hoth in Episode 5. Now during this time period we have a Luke Skywalker who is very inexperienced with his lightsabre and thus we get a Luke with a default ranged attack with a simple sabre strike ability. We also know that Luke stays this way (inexperienced in lightsabre combat) until he starts his training with Yoda on Degobah.

So through a lot of extrapolating and jumping to conclusions I think it is safe to assume that the next proper campaign (big box expansion) will be based on Hoth, in time period 4, where we still can use/gain a Luke that is blaster focused. (We'll probably see a little box expansion based on Bespin/Cloud City)

Okay so that's the first big assumption, now onto round 2.

We know that Luke does become more proficient in lightsabre combat, even besting Vader at the end of Jedi. So my second conclusion is thus - we will get a second Luke Skywalker at some point, the one with his green lightsabre and greater mastery of the force and I suspect he will be available for time periods 5-7 (7 being the latest I could find listed on a card "Celebration" & "The Spice Job" respectively).

So what do you guys think? I'm probably jumping to to many conclusions but it's fun nonetheless.

Thanks for reading, LeighPouse

I don't think there's ever been any doubt about this whatsoever. People keep posting about it as though they've uncovered a revelation, but I think it's always been fairly clearly implicit.

100% this.

Also, NO NO NO to Hoth. Why do so many people want Hoth? It'd make zero since to have more than one mission at Hoth since the empire was only there during that one battle and I doubt they'd waste the material to make tons of snow tiles for just that one battle.

This.

(I find the phrasing of "clearly implicit" amusing though! :)

I imagine we'll get 1-2 versions of each 'main' character - where appropriate (I don't there's a need/justification in multiple Vaders, Chewies, Lando's):

Luke:

- Hero of the Rebellion

- Jedi Knight

Han:

- Scoundrel

- General

Leia:

- Princess/Diplomat?

- Rebel Leader?

That's funny, I didn't even think about them making a 2nd Luke with different abilities. I was just hoping for a 2nd sculpt, since I don't think he went back to his Tatooine robes after he blew up the death star.

People want Hoth because a) it was a cool battle, and b) It's a distinctively different color palette from what we currently have. I would expect it in a small box expansion rather than a large one, with 4-5 snow tiles and connectors. I'm sure Hoth isn't the only snow planet in the universe... But we probably won't see it since wave 2 looks to be after Hoth in the timeline.

Can see Luke versions as ESB "Jedi in training"and RotJ "Jedi Knight". An X-wing pilot Luke, probably not.

Can really only see a RotJ General Solo as another version of Han. Nothing on the current deployment card suggests it couldn't cover a ESB version.

And who doesn't want a "Slave Leia" ally? Or I guess an Endor Leia.

As for Hoth, like Goth said, it not the only snow planet. For that matter, no reason it can't be thought there's a snow base at a planets north/south pole.

It's not implausible that the 4 heroes were at the battle of Hoth, guarding the back door and epicly failed and were the reason we got "Imperial troops have entered the base! Imperial troops have..*static*" during the movie. A Battle of Hoth campaign could start with the heroes patrolling outside the base and fending off Wampas then probe droids. Then just a series of running gun battles, sabotage, data securing, etc...in Echo base missions. Finale mission being a get to your ship escape on an airfield that Imperials just started to swarm onto.

You're right, it's not implausible. I'm not really sure how I feel about it though (and I get the same feeling across all Star Wars games). Of course, it's Star Wars, so it's going to feature Luke and Han and Vader and the Force. But at the same time... I'd quite like to tell my own stories, not always be hanging off their coat tails.

Example 1: in the campaign we just played through, the heroes had the choice of either Han's side mission or Luke's side mission, the reward of each being getting either Han or Luke respectively as an ally. But considering they wanted to be the heroes of the story, getting a pre-existing character as an ally didn't seem to them like much of a reward! They wanted it to be their story, not Luke's.

Example 2: so wait, Luke met Diala? Diala's "force-sensitive" - let's be honest, she's pretty much a Jedi (especially given that she had picked up Shu Yen's Lightsaber by this stage of the campaign). How come he needed Yoda for training? How come Diala didn't train him, or accompany him to Dagobah, or they didn't team up together (Vader: "Luke, I am your fathAAAARGH" as Diala cuts him in half with her lightsaber in a sneak attack from behind)? But... at the same time... who wants to play a Star Wars game and NOT have a Force-using Lightsaber-wielding Jedi on their team? (See also Kyle Katarn, etc). There was no way our gaming group was going to leave the Jedi's hero card in the box when they were choosing heroes.

So I can see it both ways, but in general, I would personally prefer the main plot at least to be no more than tangentially related to what we saw in the movies. The campaign in the Core Set does that reasonably well, I think (albeit that Darth Vader crops up too much - most of the other established characters feature as nothing more than cameos in side missions). I would hope that future campaigns will allude to the films in a similar way, but having them all be part of the same missions, or going on at the same time as more interesting stuff on the other side of the planet, seems potentially quite limiting, to me.

But it is what that is. It's Star Wars, it's cool! But the coolest thing about it will always be the (original) movies. It's a fine balance between ignoring the movies and just being Generic Sci-Fi Game With Stormtroopers, and sticking too closely to the movies and your supposed heroes feel like someone else's decoy or sidekick. It's possible to get it right, but it's also possible to get it very wrong.

^^^^^^^

Pretty much this. Diala's inclusion in the game bothers me too and brings up a lot of contradicting facts.

Also, for your movie battles the differences between winning and losing would be even more meaningless or contradict the movies. What would happen if your mission of the Battle of Hoth was won by the rebel players? "Congratz guys! But you still lose and Empire wins."

Or your battle on Cloud City: "You rescued Han Solo! ....But Boba Fett throws a smoke bomb and steals him back."

I think my version on how the heroes could work on Hoth is viable. We know the Empire destroys Echo base in the end so missions could be structured with this in mind. Mission or 2 outside the base doing a patrol encountering Wampas and Probe Droids, perhaps a band a Mercs looking to set up a base of their own or looking to narc on the Rebels by scouting them out. Mission holding the back door. Mission to secure power relays/computer terminals. How about trapping that Wampa in that room in the base(from the, ugg, Special Edition). Mission where the heroes need to collect crates and get them off the board.

All ending in a "Get to the ship!" finale where the heroes are running from point A to point B to escape while Imperial swarm them.

Never noticed the side missions in the core had different time periods. I guess that just shows that the developer have pretty long plans for this game

Snow tiles could be used for more than just Hoth. There are many Snow worlds in Star Wars lore, and any planet could have a polar region. Even Coruscant is said to have a polar region in the fluff
