Starting a league

By ramy, in X-Wing Organized Play

How do you run your league? I am wanting to start one in my LGS and was wanting ideas.

Just in the last few months we have begun to try and build a local X-Wing Scene here in Northern Utah, it started off with just me and 4 other guys playing regularly. In May we decided to try and step it up and run a League at a local store.

Wanting to grow the player base and bring in new players we decided to make the first league as non-competative as we could, at least in terms of winning games, and also get the experienced guys to try and bring some new things that weren't "Tourney Net-lists". So we decided to do Achievement Points to decide the Top 4 Players in the League that would win prizes. These would be points for playing games, playing multiple games in a league night, building lists a specific way, etc. The full rules can be seen here if you are interested:

We also decided to do Nightly Giveaways for doing random tasks during League play... and a few of the experienced guys donated acrylic tokens, alt art cards, etc for the prize pool.

We had 15 players sign up for the League in total, and never had a night go by that had fewer than 10 players...which is a good step up from the 4-6 we usually had.

For the June League we are doing an Escalation Event. Where players bring 30/60/90 points for the first three weeks. They will be able to play as many games as they want in the night, and record their single highest scored game (points lost vs destroyed) of the night to go as thier Round 1/2/3 results. The top 4 players will then compete in a 2 round tourney at 120 pts for week 4 to determine the top 4 spots and prizes. The other league members will compete in a Last Man Standing Furball Event, with the last 2 players standing will also earn prizes. For the Furball players will all bring 3 ships up to 30 points each, and then they will put into battle one ship at a time. When a ship is lost a player will deploy another untill they are knocked out.

Thats what we have done so far... hope this helps!

Cool. Thanks for the info.

Our local game store is running an eight week tournament-esque event. Each player is assigned one game per week, and each week has a different format. One week might be no small-based ships. Another week is no large-based ships. And so on. We have six signed up so far, with a few more interested. It should be fun.
