On the Brink vs Resolve

By tyflikw, in Game Masters

Do criticals over ride talents? One of my guys took a 92 critical (on the brink - Until healed, suffer 1 strain each time you perform an action) but his talent in resolve (When a character involuntarily suffers strain, he suffers 1 less strain per rank of Resolve, minimum 1) negates the crit?
I wanted to say that choosing to perform an action made the strain voluntary but he claimed it was an involuntary taking of strain so.

Your thoughts?

You did see the "minimum of 1" part, right?

So that means no matter how many talents of Resolve someone takes they will always take at least 1? (I may have noticed it before, but didn't think twice about it)

Yep.

Another thing to keep in mind is that talents like that don't ever negate the crit. They may allow you to ignore the effects, but the crit is still there.

For example, the Heroic Fortitude talent lets you ignore Brawn and Agility crits. The crits are still there, so they still add +10 to further crit rolls.

Great point Eldritch. The situation hadn't arisen that the unhealed crit made a difference but that's good to remember. Thanks!

Yeah, one thing to note is this system is designed to make it hard to kill players. Per RAW critting is the only way to do it, which is why you don't want those crits piling up.
