Is Hobbie a viable threat to Soontir, Jake etc?

By BCooper85, in X-Wing

Morning guys,

So after the weekend I found that my Dash/Chewie build was susceptible to arc dodgers(fairly obviously looking back) with authothrusters (Soontir being the main culprit) so I've started looking at ways to counter it.

Dash(EU, PtL, Kyle crew, title, HLC) stays, no question. It's the 42pts vacated by Chewie that I have to play with.

On fb a chap called Chris suggested using Hobbie with R3-A2, Flech torps and munitions failsafe with a lonely Bandit. I used it twice last night against a Han/Jake build and although I lost twice(Ollie did come 30th at Nationals) I think he could turn out to be very useful. Theoretically he TL's the target as early in the game as possible so he's got it in the bank. Then at the right moment he use R3 to stress them and then fires the flech torps to stress him again. Spending the TL sheds Hobbie's stress and if the torps miss he's got them again to use.

If I can get better at guessing where the opponent ends up the Bandit could come in very handy as a blocker.

Thoughts?

Suggestions?

why waste time (and points) with hobbie when you can get a title ICT gold squadron w/r3-a2 for the same (as hobbie without upgrades)?

Hobbie's just an overall bad option because he's in a baffling ship for his ability. Hobbie in an E-wing would have been amazing. Hobbie in an X-wing is free points for your opponent, given how frail they get when they're not focusing to TL

Well when you put it like that!

OK well obviously the Gold is much tankier but surely the extra red die counts for a lot? The point of it is too double stress the jinky ships so they can't get their actions, he may not be around long(depending on how you fly him) but he should give your opponent something else to think about other than the Super Dash lurking around.

Also X-Wings are my favourite ship so if I can work out a way to get one in I'm taking it!

I tried Hobbie last week as a support for making Eaden Vrill work and also had a Bwing with tactician. Hobbie used the droid twice which was nice and his own pilot ability kicked in just once I guess. He was shot down real quickly so had little inpact overall on the game, but I liked the list so will try it some other time again and also the variant with a ywing.

Hobbies problem against arc dodgers will be that his arc is easy to dodge.

As said above

Good luck trying to catch fel.

If your opponent knows how to use fel you'll never catch him

Worst case scenerio you do get fel in arc, he just doesn't ptl, evade, hobby stresses him and he gets his focus.

Now Hobbie is stressed.

I like hobbie in theory, but really the Xwing is too frail a ship and his PS is too low.

I love the Gold, r3-a2, title, ICT combo for 25 pts to do the same thing, multiple times. but you lose double stress at Range 3, and you'll never k-turn.

I've tried stress Wes (wes, VI, R3A2) but again, feels too fragile for the points.

I really like Luke w/predator and r3a2, for a decently offensive and defensive ship without actions, which feels like a better use overall. I wish his PS was one higher, and so VI instead of Predator works ok. PS 8 and PS5 really aren't any different against Soontir. again you lose the double stress, which is pretty important vs Fel.

VI, R3-A2, EU Luke was something I used before the phantom errata to counter a rather obvious problem

that worked splendily then, also against Dash and Corran (not a lot of soontirs then), but I don't know if it'd hold up against all the fat turret bull we're seeing. He, 2 tactician b-wings, and a prototype blocker did defeat bro-bots on the way to top pick in a store champ, so there's that.

I think the humble y's the best bet in the current environment, though. It's cheap (As you're going to get) and reliable (Always stresses regardless of dice results), and packs its own ion + stress combo
