Shadow Rules duplicates question

By Twn2dn, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

To confirm, duplicates that come out of the shadows count as cards coming out of shadows in terms of triggering responses, and Tyrion and Queen of Thorns can trigger off their own duplicates, assuming they came out of the shadows, right?

Here's the tricky question, do these duplicates also count as characters coming into play? Or do they count as cards that came out of shadows but not characters per se? (I always forget how duplicates work.)

Believe you've said it all correctly. They can trigger their abilities when dupes come out of shadows. And they count as "cards out of shadows" but not characters, as they're only coming into play as duplicates.

I have another question I want to confirm here.

Per the Core set rules:

If you have a duplicate (another card of the same
name) of a unique card in your hand but you already
control and own a version of that card currently
in play, you may attach the duplicate from
your hand to the unique card in play, for no gold
cost, during your marshalling. Do this by simply
placing the duplicate under the version already in
play.

And per the Shadows rules:

Shadows cards must first be marshalled into Shadows, and then brought into
play from Shadows at the appropriate time. Shadows cards cannot be marshalled
directly into play.

So the question is... is attaching a duplicate "playing" a duplicate or no cost? Or is it a "put into play" type effect? I know that if I already have a unique Shadow character in play I can put a copy into shadows and then bring it out as normal... but is it also an option to attach it directly from hand to the character (because if dupes are "put into play" then it should be as that would bypass the shadows restriction)? Or do you always HAVE to put it into the shadows first?

Well, short answer: you can attach a shadow-crested duplicate to a character you control directly from your hand. No need to put it into shadows, then attach it by paying the printed cost.

This question was asked to Nate by a friend of mine some time ago. This is the reply he got:

If you have a duplicate (another card of the same name) of a unique card in your hand but you already control and own a version of that card currently in play, you may attach the duplicate from your hand to the unique card in play, for no gold cost, during your marshalling."

The important point being that you are not specifically "playing" the duplicate from your hand. You are just attaching it to the card already in play. This means you can do so even with a Shadowed version of the card in hand.

The Shadow rules sheet insert then covers the case where a duplicate comes out of Shadows -- in that case you still have to pay the cost, but it immediately then attaches as a duplicate.

You can do either. Play it as a normal dupe for free during marshalling, or bring it through shadows per the regular shadows rules in order to gain a benefit from a "comes out of shadows" effect on another card already in play.

just wanted this thread to stop showing up as unread for me. nothing to add gran_risa.gif

Yeah, I edited my post when it was not the newest one. Sorry about that :P
