First off I would like to thank all the guys at FCB who helped put this event on. 94 people is not a small crowd and they handled it well (even with a few software curveballs). I'm somewhat local (3 hours away) and was really excited about attending this year. I had been watching the store's wednesday night live streams leading up to the event hoping to scope out the competition. I had won a store championship earlier in the year and had a bye but decided not to bring it because I will also be going to Raleigh in a couple weeks and figured it would do me more good with only 64 people playing. A few friends of mine were planning to attend but life happens and their plans changed close to game day. I was on the fence about making the trek alone because most of the fun of these big events is comparing notes with friends between games and picking on each others mistakes.
I eventually decided I would go just to help get some of the nerves out of my system before the Raleigh regionals. My list consisted of
RAC-gunner/Isard/Rebel captive/Engine Upgrade/VI
Soontir Fel- stealth device/autothrusters/PTL/RGT
I know, I know I'm being boring and drinking the meta coolaide. However I really enjoy bigs ships with EU (especially firesprays) and wanted something I knew could be competitive yet fun.
1-The first round of pairings had me going up against someone I have actually played before in local events in Greenville SC. If my memory is correct he was flying 3 blues with tactitian and flechettes along with a gold squadron pilots with autoturret and flechettes. Soontir wasn't showing it but he was nervous. Then the clouds parted and a beam of light shown down on the store computer. Then from somewhere behind me the TO shouts "There has been an error and we will be regenerating the lists" I couldn't have been happier.
1b-After the kinks were worked out i found myself facing 2 blues a gold with autoturret and Ten Numb with VI and mangler cannon. Soontir hates Ten so I knew I had to be cautious. My opponent placed all of his ships in one corner and a placed soontir directly across from them with RAC roughly in the middle of the table. My plan was to draw his guys into chasing soontir and streak down the board with RAC and following from behind. Much to my surprise my plan worked perfectly. He knew if he could get a crit on Soontir he would have a way easier time winning. He realized too late that (after removing Ten from the table) the decimator may have been the better option. I only managed to clear off Ten and one other Blue during the game, mostly due to the fact that soontir may have only taken 3 shots the whole game because he was running "confidently" away. I don't believe Ten ever got to shoot. My opponent was a great guy though (Colin I believe) who said he had only ever played his brother at home. I gave a few pointers for future matches and we shook hands and headed off for round 2. MOV 158?
2- Round 2 introduced me to Brobots. I live in a small town and have a few friends I get together with to play. We don't have a FLGS or anything so we just clear off the dining room table and play at home. I personally play maybe 4-5 games a month on avg possibly more right before a tournament. None of us use Vassal either. That said with our limited plays and us each having our own favorites I had only played Brobots once before and that was his first time flying them. This guy was somewhat more familiar. He was flying B &D with HLC and honestly i dont remember the rest. The game ended pretty quickly. I had a brain fart and foolishly placed Soontir straight across from them thinking about Dash's donut hole and somehow gave IGB the same handicap in my head. My opponent gently showed me the error of my ways by removing Soontir almost immediately. RAC followed soon after. full loss MOV 0
3- At this point I was only thinking about that alt art Boba Fett. I was at table 32 and needed to win to stay in contention. My opponent was flying Dash and Leebo with manglers. recon specialists and kyle were in the mix somewhere along with PTL and lone wolf and dash was in the outrider. he placed dash near the center and leebo off to his left. I had Soontir far right and RAC near the center I believe. I was able to keep Sootir out of arc and he had some tough choices because he had leebo on the far side moving first and bumping into dash to get into the action which also negated lone wolf. To be fair his dice were as cold as I've ever seen and I almost always had TL to back up my gunner and crit focus from RAC. Soontir also loves range 1 just outside dash's arc. I was able to knock dash out pretty early and then Leebo followed suit a little later. MOV 200
4- This match was really fun to play and one of the most stressful as well. My opponent (who turned out to be an awesome guy) was fielding 5 black squadron pilots with predator and night beast I believe. I got a little cocky early thinking he was going to turn everyone after RAC to burn him down and committed Soontir just a little too close. He decided to turn all but 2 after RAC and I found myself at range 1 of 2 ties with Soontir. He was able to sneak a crit onto Sootir (injured pilot). So in the blink of an eye I had lost my pilot ability my PTL and my stealth device. Much swearing ensued. That same turn though I one shotted at least one tie and continued to do the same to 4 more over the course of the game. Some how I was able to keep Soontir alive the rest of the game and ended up with another full win. MOV 200
5- For those of you who watched the live stream from the event you already know what happened in this game. I faced off against 5 a-wings with prockets. RAC will never admit it but he was terrified. I had watched this same player with this same list destroy another list like mine on the live stream during their store championships a few months ago. I started off slow with RAC to get a feel for things and sped Soontir in on the flank. he turned one squad along the bottom and streaked for the far side of the board while bringing the other straight up. Next I believe i banked right and was only in one of the A-wings arcs with RAC while Soontir was about an inch from one on the side. I remember very clearly thinking "I'm only getting shot by one guy. This is great" Then I played out the next movement phase in my head and knew if I didn't boost into more arcs now I was going to lose for sure. Not necessarily win but definitely lose. I did the hard thing and boosted into MORE arcs at range one, but fortunately he had just boosted with all the A-wings and had no focuses for prockets. My next move was a long 3 bank and possibly a boost and I had made it to freedom and he would now have to chase me which meant lots of boosting and no focuses. He managed to block Soontir at least once but every time he had someone lined up to take a kill shot they got vaped before they had the chance. He eventually conceded with one A-wing left. MOV 200
6- It was at this point I found myself 4-1 playing on table 5. "Holy crap!" I thought when I realized a win here meant I would make the top 8 cut more than likely. I sat down waiting for my opponent who turned out to be none other than James Ayers. Also known as the Tabletop General. I texted my friends who all know him from the live stream videos and his blog and received much needed encouragement. James was flying his famous triple interceptors build with Soontir, Carnor and a royal guard all tricked out. I knew if I let them get behind me it was going to be a short game and we actually both said it was going to be a quick game one way or the other. luckily RAC was at PS 10 so I was able to place him after Soontir and opted to place him straight across from him. Opening moves for both of us were cautious. None of the usual 5 straight with a boost and barrel you are used to seeing from interceptors. i angled in my Soonitr with a 3 bank towards his and moved up RAC 1 straight. the next move was going to determine a lot so I yet again moved somewhat cautiously. he 2 banked bother carnor and the RG towards RAC and brought Sootir up with a straight maneuver. I had banked in with my Soontir and barrel rolled out of carnor and the RG's range. RAC moved 1 straight once again and TL'd Soontir and was able to catch just the back of his ship in arc. Range one shot with 4 reds on 4 greens. I believe I managed 3 hits and a crit from RAC. He rolled 3 blanks and a focus. He spent his evade and focused for one then took the hit and flipped his crit. DOUBLE DAMAGE! We both just sat there for a second in shock. He took a moment to take a picture for his blog and then we continued. He brought his guys down and forced my Soontir to bump giving his royal guard a range 1 shot. RAC pulled a hard 2 and then boosted out of arcs and put 2 dmg on the RG. Soontir then finished the job. Carnor was bumping and had no shot. Since Soontir wasn't stressed I then hard turned and barrel rolled and boosted to have a shot on carnor. That Round or the next I was able to sneak 2 damage onto him and James very graciously conceded. I believe the game lasted about 20 minutes with him never firing a shot. I'm pretty sure I will never experience another game that one sided in my life. To James' credit he took it like a man and shook my hand and said he hoped I would win the whole thing. MOV 200
TOP 8!!!
Round-1 After magically making the top 8 I found myself paired against another similar list. This game also aired on the stream I believe. My opponent had whisper with intel agent, FCS and ACD ad kenkirk with recon specialist, Isard, rebel captive and lone wolf. I may be forgetting something. I thought I had an advantage with my VI and may have gotten a little cocky inwardly. It was a long game and late so I don't remember that much about it other than it taking a long time to kill whisper and how much I ended up hating kenkirk with recon and lone wolf. That combo is really hard to kill late game with Isards free evade as well. I remember it coming down to my Soontir and his Kenkirk and I had just critted him reducing his agility by one which actually mattered against him. He kept his stress a few turns in a row just trying to fake me out but I managed to stay right on him at range one and drove home about 9 dmg in 3 rounds i believe. we came down to the last round of the game and I'm watching the clock tick down behind him. i was at range one with double focus from the rebel captive stress and he only has 1 hull left and was sporting Isards evade token. I took a deep breath and rolled my four dice. 2 blanks a hit and a focus. At that moment I had completely forgotten about the agility crit and thought he still had to roll a dice. I didn't realize I had won until he reached out to shake my hand. I must have looked so confused. I told him good game and checked my phone and read the texts from my friends watching online talking about the heart attacks they were currently having. They told me to get my act together and that the next match had better not be that close.
TOP 4!!!!
WOW! I was still in shock when they handed me my new maneuver templates. I had refused to use the new dice in the previous game because mine were doing just fine I thought but I busted out the templates immediately. My fascination with shiny things was soon forgotten when I realized It was myself and 3 Brobots in the top 4. The only list to have beaten me all day and I would have to face it twice to win the whole thing. My opponent was a guy from Charleston SC named Preston I had talked to a few times earlier in the day. He was running B & D with different upgrades on each ship. Forgive my memory but this was happening at about 2am. I just remember it seeming unique at the time. I had learned a lot from my brief Brobot game earlier and decided to place Soontir on the opposite side of the board this time. he started both of his in the corner and came out at different angles. I bumped one with RAC but Soontir managed to get in close early to one that had just slooped and got off 4 hits immediately stripping its shields. He proceeded to run that one away to regroup and thats about all the details I can remember other than when it was all said and done I had managed to take out both his ships. I'm guessing I had done some serious arc dodging with Fel because after I had blown up his last ship he looked at me with murder in his eyes and said "Good game man. Now pick up your green dice because I'm still shooting Fel." lol. If you are reading this Preston I'm sure you will get me back in Raleigh.
FINAL TABLE!!!!
Yet again I was facing Brobots. This time it was B & C with HLC, ADVS, autothrusters, and something else? Again it was late. I set up my ships similarly to the last game since that worked out ok and the rest is kind of a blur. This game was also on the stream so you can go watch it on youtube in a few days and fill in the gaps for yourself. All I really remember is how the momentum would switch back and forth every few rounds. I was doing pretty well to start. He had landed on a rock and I was able to focus fire but his greens were hot and I only got a shield or two for my efforts. Then it shifted back his way once he managed to take out RAC. At this point I believe Soontir had 1 hull left and his ships each 1 and 2 hull. I had managed to crit B at some point negating his pilot ability so that was at least promising. The rest is a boosting and barrel rolling blur but I eventually took out B and rolled the most clutch green dice of my life to evade 4 hits with 3 dice while having only 1 hull. I then proceeded to take part in my first ever Mexican stand off on the very edge of the mat. I wanted a hard one and he just kept bumping me so I couldn't do it. we would then pick up our dials and pretend to think for a few seconds and do the same thing over and over again. Seemed like a good while. Eventually I remember it was 4am and I still had a 3 hour drive home so I opted for a 3 hard instead and just barely cleared him. I then barrel rolled away and boosted in hoping to have a shot but just missing. next turn I had a range one shot and couldn't land a hit. He then advs boosted getting his evade and then K-turn. I did my green 2 bank to follow and was at extreme range. I didn't think I could boost and get a shot so I barrel rolled away and turtled just in case I was in range. Turns out I wasn't and stressed myself for no reason. Next I locked in a 2 hard right towards him and sat down to wait. My opponent took several minutes to place this dial. We both knew this was probably going to be it. He was also stressed and opted for a really long maneuver thinking I was going to try something tricky. When I hard turned in I had him dead to rights at range one and out of his arc. I just focused and managed to plink off his last two hull for the win after a 95 minute marathon.
I really love this game and am a very competitive individual but never thought I would walk into a room with 93 other people and walk out on top. Big thanks to all my friends in Greenwood who stayed up till 4:30am and watched the entire thing cheering me on via my vibrating phone.
I read the forums a lot but have never posted and after the other night the name Baron Sootir Fidel has seemed to stick so I thought it only fair to have it be my username.
Thanks again to everyone who helped put this on and it was great to meet everyone else and make new friends.
Fly Casual.
