1st Escort Squadron "Johnny Walker"

Here's the first of my repainted ships, 2 NebB from 1st Light Division or shortened to LiDiv 1 and 2 CR90 from 1st Fast Division or shortened to FasDiv 1. Of course it's commanded by Johnny Walker.

Together, they're grouped as 1st Escort Squadron. Mostly tasked to escorting Rebel supply convoys as well as scouting missions for Rebel Battle Groups and they're pretty much famous for preventing and thwarting small Imperial ships from attacking the convoys that they escort.

For the NebB, I actually took the grey and blue combination from US Navy's Measure 22 scheme but I realise using Medium blue together with Light Sea Grey was too dark.

As for CR90, I took the colour scheme from Japanese planes.

Here's a breakdown of the colour scheme. I use my stock of Tamiya colours since I am a modeller.

I am also thinking of repainting the RAF, VSD and GSD as well.

Simple and elegant. I really like the corvette, has a kind of eclipse feel.

Feels like they could use a wash and highlight, and maybe more lines of contrasting colours as black and yellow makes them look a little dull.

I did diluted the wash too much.

I think I'll skip on the highlights. I'm still struggling with highlights on my models.

Right.... I've finally gotten my hands on 1 copy of the fighter pack and I want to colour them. Any tips for it?

Do you leave them on the stand and paint them or take them out and paint them one at a time?

Do you guys use paint brush or those coloured permanent markers?

So any tips?




Side note... Taffy 1 comprising of Escort Squadron 1 and an RAF pretty much intercepted and obliterated the 2 VSD and 1 GSD on Operation Coruscant. Yvaris and Paragon kept on hitting both VSD continuously with crits.

Operation Coruscant

Intercept and destroy any enemy supply convoys. Avoid battle with superior forces.

The only good thing coming out from that debacle was the supporting GSD obliterated 2 CR90 with devastating broadsides and TIE screen wiping out 2 X-Wing squadrons. My sister's Luke was way too far behind to do anything. Another NebB almost fell victim to my GSD but as luck would have it, I rolled 4 blank blacks

2nd Battle Squadron Flagship

Here's my next repainted ship. The Assault Frigate has been given colours similar to those used by planes during D-Day. This's the flagship for the 2nd Battle Squadron.

Again I used my stock of Tamiya paints that I have

• Field grey
• JN grey
• Medium blue
• Black green

Next on the paint queue would either be the Rebel squadrons or the Imperial ships first

Lovin' the invasion stripes on the Assault Frigate, mate. It really does remind me of something like a mosquito melded with one of those barrage balloons over the beaches. So congratulations, I like the subdued colours and 'streaky' wash pattern which makes it feel more like a scaled ship. Plus, that might be my favourite pattern for a Mk.II. The only thing I can think of saying is maybe a little bit of blacklining in the horizontal plate gaps might help it stand out even more and make the ship feel larger by giving it an artificial shadow.

Lets see, side notes for fighters, it might be a benefit to use one stand depending on how clean you want to keep your hands and work space. That said, I never found that it was an imperative when painting up imperial or rebel fighters, use keeping a grip on the peg was enough. Just try out the colour scheme on a single fighter first, no need to go ahead and do all of them if you aren't happy with it (I had to strip 3 X wings in Simple Green because I wasn't planning ahead).

I think paint is usually the way to go over markers, but part of that is just the ease of use with washes and inks compared to markers. Typically, I just wash the ship with a slightly water-thinned acrylic that I can see working as the deepest shadow colour for the fighter (you can clean off anything extra with a Q-tip), then you can layer up or add detail via additional washes. That said, I still use permanent markers and highlighters for all the edging for tokens and components and I've seen some decent effects as far as fighters go.

What's your plans for the Imperial capitals and rebel snub fighters?

This is about the closest thing I've got to a portfolio, so my little bits of advice don't come from thin air.

Definitely for the Imperials, one of the ships will get the unique FW-190 Jagdverband 44 underside. Most probably the GSD but I'm trying to see if I can get matching top side for it.

Other than that I look towards WW2 or WW1 for inspiration. As for the snubs of both sides.... It's back to WW2 and WW1 coloration. I've already envisioned roughly how Fel's Flying Circus would look like.

That's a striking colour scheme for the Jagdverband 44 , no doubt about it. I think you're on the right track with a GSD getting that kind of underbelly effect.

Hmm, it seems like trying any mid-plane mottling colouration might be a little hard to represent on a VSD or ISD, but a GSD might be able to pull it off because of its higher profilesand flat top delineation.

Seems rebel snub fighters might get an easier time paint wise as there's just more horizontal planes and recognizable flight surfaces. It's sort of nice that you might be able to duplicate some of the tail colours over onto the cowling for an X-wing's engines (something like the Red Tails wouldn't be too hard) or the B-wing's lower wing. Naturally, A-wings lend themselves really well to markings (before now I never considered any historical scheme, but I'm kind of tempted to add in an A-wing squadron in the typical 'Jolly Roger' black and yellow). The Y-wing is a shoo-in for some nice twin-engine groups out there too. The P-38 in particular has some great markings that could translate over.

Best of luck, mate. I'll be keeping an eye on this, too (I'm still liking the CR-90s' scheme).

The VSD is going to get MiG or Sukhoi colour schemes. Seems "Imperialish"

Good suggestion on the P-38 reference for the Y-Wing.

332nd "Tycho" Fighter Group

Presenting the first of the many squadron repaints, 332nd "Tycho" Fighter Group comprising of A-Wings. It's a 4 squadron fighter group. The colour scheme was influenced by the Tuskegee Airmen.

These are the following Tamiya colours used -

• Flat aluminium
• NATO Black
• Khaki darb
• Red
• Squadron colours -
  • Flat yellow
  • Red
  • Flat green
  • Desert sand

The planes were washed with Citadel's Nulin oil. I'm waiting for it to dry before sealing it with dull coat. No primer was used. I painted it directly on the model itself.

Destroyer Squadron 44

I present to you, the 1st of the Imperial ship repaints, the 2 GSD from Destroyer Squadron 44 or DesRon 44. Colour scheme was adapted from Jagdverband 44 although the dorsal colours isn't what was painted on the actual FW 190 planes from Jgvd 44.

Colours used -

• RLM Grey
• Flat white
• 2 Red : 1 Flat yellow
• Lifecolour's matt pale blue (engine glow)

The whole entire thing was washed with Citadel's Nulin oil

I adore how those ventral stripes turned out! Absolutely striking and fantastic way to show off the Jagdverband 44 markings. I hadn't really noticed how shallow the keel was for those GSD's either, so it really helps the allusion.

But I also really like the top dorsal stripes. They're crisp, so very good masking job, and it just seems to fit with the flavour. Do both GSD's have the same dorsal marking? What brand of masking tape is that, if I might ask? I'm getting more and more tempted to try a stripe on one of my ISD's when it arrives.

Both GSD got the same dorsal stripes. It's DesRon 44's dorsal signature recognition.

I used Tamiya's Masking Tape for Curves (2mm). You can mask curves using that tape easily.

One can just imagine the feelings of Imperial troops seeing those stripes floating in the sky giving them atmospheric support... Or the feeling of dread in the Rebels that do not have such support.

"Howl's Hounds"

This was completed before Destroyer Squadron 44.

As of July 4, I've covered Howl's fighter group in black primer since I feel that this paint work was botched

1st Interceptor Group "Fel's Flying Circus"

Yes ever since I got Imperial Aces for X-Wing, I've always associate that red Intercptor as Fel's since I think he sort of has the "Red Baron" presence to him.

Here I've taken it a step further. The whole entire Interceptor Group takes on Red Baron's fighter group persona. All of the Interceptors are colourfully coloured, each squadron has it's unique base colour topped by a myraid of colours and livery. For the sake of sanity, I've kept it to the base colour for each squadron.

If you're wondering if they got Royal TIE Guards in the group than the answer is no. Apparently all the squadron leaders decided to colour their Interceptors red to match Fel's Interceptor and to spread fear and panic across the field. Since Fel's pretty much known to have a red Interceptor (yes I know original sources says otherwise but this is my take on the scheme of things.

Those look amazing. I love the gladiator with the red bottom. What do you plan on doing for the Imp when you get it?

For the ISD, I'm following this colour scheme

I'll definitely want an all deep red bottom. As for the colour patches, I'll figure it out

For MC80 TORPEDO Frigate, I'm already set on using this colour scheme, Just need to map out where each colour goes so it's analogous

Anything based on Bismark and Tirpitz is good to me, and as for the Kitakami and Ooi , well, great reference by the by But you could always use the slight divot on the MC30C as a dividing line, using light green on the upper hull, dark green/grey on the lower hull, and a white stripe just below the dividing line (then white along the rear tail in a pair of parallel stripes). As for the charcoal and aubern, you could use it as a shade on the spine or weathering colour.

Very cool Cruiser. Will definitely be ideal in a mirror/tournament match on those rebels. I definitely liked your color schemes though.

152nd Assault Fighter Group "Farlander's Fighters"

It took a long while to choose the colour scheme for the Bs. Finally, I chose to RN Fleet Air Arm's colour scheme for this. It actually turned out pretty good
