Noob seeks advice on what to buy.

By De Bad Wolf, in Star Wars: Armada

Just got the Armada starter kit. Was hoping to get some advice on what to buy other then the starter box.

My friend and I favor the opposite factions.

We split two starter boxes.

What would be good expansions to buy to make 300 points for each faction. .

Goal being buying the fewest expansions.

Example: People who buy starter X-Wing I tell them to get Falcon or Slave 1. You can build a decent 100 points

Also is there any squad builder sites for Armada?

Thanks for any help.

I just got one of each expansion. I found it easier to try the ships and see what I like. You can either do that or look on the forum for a list of each faction and get only those ships.

As for Armada builder http://armada.fabpsb.net/

You can get by with the fighter pack and the gladiator or assault frigate for each faction respectively but I would recommend buying the victory expansion or the neb-b respectively to get some better upgrades for both raw damage from ships and fighter support

Angain bear minimum would be the gsd/af mk2+ fighters

Buy the Assault Frigate MK II and rebel squadrons and one Gladiator Class SD and imperial squadrons. You can even leave the squadrons out and still have 300pt game. The Assault Frigate brings a medium size ship for the rebel and a nice match for VSD. The Gladiator has better manouverability than VSD and works nicely against squadrons (which VSD doesn't do).

From there it's easier to decide how to expand your fleet as you know all the available ships and how they play.

If your happy to search eBay for specific upgrades (there are some great ones in the expansions) then i would recommendthe fighters and maybe the assault ffrigate.

These would allow you to experiment with as many unit types as possible. Trippling up on capitals would probably best wait until you know exactly what you want from a fleet (a dodonna lead triple neb-b fleet is rather different to a Mon mothma lead cr90 build). There is also the fact that the AF2 is a really fun ship! It can be built to do a lot of different things which again helps with the experimentation options.

Out of curiosity which faction do you favor?

Core set times 2 and swap out the Rebel for the Imperial so in effect you and your friend have two complete core sets for that faction of choice.

The Imperial player could probably go for 2 Gladiators and two Fighters.

The Rebel Player would be OK with one Assault frigate and two Fighters.

I favor empire and my friend favors rebels.

Get the gladiator

This will probably be frowned upon, but i made black and white copies of the upgrade cards so all my ships have access to them. I also made enough copies of the fighters to represent the number of fighters i have available to use. This is from my days of playing Epic Space Marine 2nd edition and wanting army cards to build fleets.

the simplest and cheapest imo Wave 1 jumps from the coreset are

rebs:

AFmkii (it'd be an insult to call this Armada's yt-1300 because the game's nuances and complexity make it far harder to use effectively, but it is the best ship to learn with imo because it's very durable and very flexible)

2 fighter packs

Imps

Gladiator (double VSDs seem difficult to come to terms with due to lack of speed and anti-fighter capability. The most flexible fleets seem to involve a skreed VSD and an engine techs demolisher + hefty fighter support to cover lack of anti-squadron + some bombers to cover lack of long range firepower)

2 fighter packs

Imo, the fighter packs are great value and both contain options well worth using in addition to the core set offerings

When is the next wave expected.

Isn't there more then 1 fighter expansion?

I bought the fighter packs for both factions. I also bought a second starter, another vic, another corvette, and another frigate... And I still don't know! I like the way rebels use fighters and imps use capital ships...

Get the gladiator

and 2 fighter packs. And another GSD if you can afford to.

But as our friendly neighborhood clone said, GET THE GSD!

So for my Birthday today, the wife got the entire Wave 1 for me, so that way I wouldn't have the struggle, implied with this threads title...

Haven't played yet, still swooshing them around my desk and dreaming of future Waves...

Yeah....you probably want one of each of the expansions. Expensive, but FFG did a good job of spreading out a lot of cool cards and ship titles in all of the expansions. I guarantee there is a card or card combination that you want to play that you can't get unless you get at least one of each. There's a sale on at Funagain Games with free shipping over $80.

So,

1 Assault Frigate

1 Victory Class SD

1 Neb B

1 Corvette

1 Rebel Squadron (B-Wings!)

1 Imperial Squadron (Tie Interceptors!)

I would tell you to get 1 of each ship, 2 of each sqauds and 1 extra dice.

Minture Market.com has them,

6.87 - dice

13.77 - CR90, Neg Frig, Rebel, and imp

19.99 - Glad

27.57 - VSD, Frig MK2

I'm going to ignore all the people who disregard the part about your goal being to work out what the minimum you need is and give my own answer! Armada is an expensive game.

For Imperials I would recommend the Gladiator. It is a quite different ship and this immediately opens up new strategies and depths to the game for the Imperial player.

I would also recommend as an alternative to the above or an addition if you can, the Imperial Squadrons as this will give you a panoply of new cards and ship types which will take you ages to exhaust all the variations of.

You could go radical and get a second VSD if you chose. It comes with some cards that aren't in the core set and a dual VSD list can be pretty fun. But for variety I would go with the first or second option.

For rebels, the Assault Frigate Mk II is the one that everyone talks about. However, an extra Neb-B and a pack of squadrons would be a fine addition, imo. Rebels are fun with lots of ships, more than one big fat one, imo. But I recognize that an AF.MkII is the "correct" answer. You will almost certainly want a rebel squadron pack to go with it, however as one of most popular ways to play it is as part of a squadron superiority build.

Hope this helps. Try to ignore those people who just tell you to get one of everything. That would cost you hundreds of dollars and really there is a huge amount of fun to be have with the two sets you have and a couple of the above.
