loads of newbie questions

By SonofaBith, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hi everyone. I'm brand new to x-wing and based in Ireland. Got the starter set a few days ago and am hooked. Just about got all the basics down but have a number of questions.

1. Does a fighter like mauler mithel get an extra dice for range 1 attacks on top of the normal extra dice for range 1? As in 4 attacks at range 1.

2. If a ship has shields and suffers a critical hit does it lose a shield token or does the c.hit bypass the shields and affect the hull? If it affects shields is a face up damage card still issued?

3. Can the scum and villainy faction ally with either of the others? And can slave 1 join s&v?

4. How often are ships re-printed? My local store has loads to keep me going for now but I want a falcon!

5. Can games take place in planetary atmospheres like bespin for example? Thinking of making a cloudy game surface.

6. If a ship does a green maneuver and discards a stress token, can it perform an action immediately?

Any help on these would be greatly appreciated.

1. Yes

2. Loses a shield first, no damage cards issued at all till shields are gone

3. Slave (Firespray) does have pilots and cards for Scum, yes. If by ally, you mean use their ships (other than Ywing and Z's models), no, they don't ally. They have their own pilots and cards

4. No idea

5. If you want it to it can

6. If it doesn't have any other stress tokens, yes

I will also point out that, unless an upgrade is faction specific, it can be used by any faction.
That includes the Slave 1 Title, which can be equipped by any Firespray.

On reprints, it may take time, but there are usually reprints done so the crazy ebay pricing subsides. Ive seen a recent reprint of falcons just go out in the US (not really a reprint, just a new run). Being in Ireland, I am not sure.

My local store announced on facebook today they will have a new batch of Falcons by the weekend. I'm based in the UK so I imagine your restock will be at a similar time. I'd grab one soonish as I imagine with the amount of people waiting on them the restock will sell out fast.

1. Yes. 2 + 1 (range 1) + 1 (ability)

2. Shields make no distinction from hits or crits. But it is important to note that hits are suffered and/or canceled before crits. So if the attacker rolls 2 hits and 1 crit, and the defender rolls 1 evade, then a single hit is canceled while the remaining hit and crit deal damage. If the defender has 1 shield and 2 hull remaining, then it would suffer the regular hit first, doing damage to the shield (and removing it) and then taking the 1 crit to the hull, receiving a faceup damage card.

3. The Most Wanted pack for S&V comes with miniatures for the y-wing and z95 (along with pilot cards). It also comes with pilot cards / cardboard for the hwk and firespray (slave1). So yes the firespray can be used in the scum faction, but it is a separate purchase for the model.

4. Local inventories may also be dependent on what the store orders. There are a number of online retailers that may have the ship you are looking for. And while the prices are typically cheaper online, I would recommend buying from your local store as much as possible, certainly if you frequent their establishment to play x-wing.

5. Some people even make specific rules to play on the death star surface (turrets). Thematically, all the ships are rated for atmospheric flight.

6. It gets technical with timing in a few cases, but it boils down to 'if you have a stress token, you cannot perform an action'. In this specific case, the 'check stress' phase comes before the 'perform action' step, so performing a green maneuver will clear a stress token enabling your action. With the starter set though, the minor technical complication part is with the tie fighter 'night beast', who says 'After executing a green maneuver, you may perform a free focus action.'. If night beast is stressed then performs a green maneuver, his ability kicks in before the stress token would be removed via green maneuver. Thus he is incapable to perform the free focus action because he is still stressed. He would still be able to perform his normal action though, assuming he is now stress free.

And there are exceptions to everything if the card specifically says so.

I'm thinking these are answered but another run down:

1. Yes. Mauler gets a bonus but that does nothing to the bonus he would normally get. It isn't a replacement so it stacks.

2. "Crits" will remove shields if there are any after "hits" have finished resolving. There are a couple things that ignore shields but they are very specific in that they deal cards to a ship instead of inflicting [hit] or [crit] results.

3. Pilots may not be used in other factions. Unless specified otherwise upgrades can go on any ship meeting their requirements.

4. Not exactly sure but I believe that if FFG runs out of stock it will print up another batch. That may not help your local supply depending on where it gets its distribution from.

5. A house rules area.

6. A ship can discard a stress during its maneuver. If it is unstressed it can then perform an Action during the Perform Action phase.
