Soontir + Turr + BH, do you think it would be competitive?

By The_Brown_Bomber, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Soontir/Title/PTL/AT/Shield Upgrade (36)

Turr/VI/AT (28)

BH/Recon Specialist (36)

2 ace arc dodgers with autothrusters to help versus the turret heavy meta. Recon specialist is there for more consistent dmg and improved defense/survivability. There are some tanky 2 ship lists and decimators and falcons that are such a pain to get rid of in a timed match. Im wondering if this list will have the firepower to take them on.

do you think this list would be competitive in the current meta?

thoughts?

Hi,

YesIn my opinion it is competitive in current meta.

I was playing following variant:

Soontir/Title/PTL/AT/Stealth Device (35)

Turr/Title/LoneWolf/AT/Stealth Device (32)

BH (33)

With quite good effects. It is fun to fly, and it works well against turret ships builds.

i think it can be...unforgiving of mistakes but yes. my personal preference is to always put an EU on bounty hunters. I also like Fel with TC

I'm not seeing a lot of two and three Interceptors making the cuts at Regionals but if you are good with Interceptors and Firesprays it should fare decently.

I love Recon Specialist on Firesprays but with two slippery Interceptors in the list it might be worth taking Rebel Captive instead. I'd imagine that if you are Interceptoring successfully, a lot of rounds the only target your opponent will have will be the Firespray. Rebel Captive punishes them for taking that shot.

I'm not sure about taking two PS9 arc dodgers without having a PS bid. It seems like being able to move last is what makes or breaks a list like that. The problem is I think that the only points you could really afford to cut would be the Firespray crew.

When I was relatively new to the game, one of my first lists I used at tourneys was:

Fel w/ PtL, TC & hull = 35

Royal w/ PtL & hull = 28

BH w/ recon = 26

99 total

This was over a year ago, so the meta was different. Back then, swarms were still pretty prevalent and 'fat' turrets less so (this is before phantoms). I found that against high firepower jousting lists, the bounty hunter really suffered because your interceptors couldn't always be in a good position to focus down the same ship, so the bounty hunter gets messed up. Against other high pilot skill arc-dodgers (including turrets with engine upgrade) the bounty hunter also struggles to keep them in arc. I moved on to try different things in place of the bounty hunter, but the same problem remained: the solitary jousting element of the list gets focussed down to quickly. Since then I've had good success with:

Fel w/ PtL & AT

Turr w/ VI & AT

Whisper w/ VI, FCS, intel agent & ACD

It is my opinion that to be successful, you either have to go one interceptor as flanker and add more stuff to support the bounty hunter (like a shuttle or academy TIES) or go entirely with arc-dodgers.

I actually just 4-0'd a local tournament with a list similar to this. I left a battle report here: https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/index.php?/topic/178354-camden-battlegrounds-52615-tournament-report/

My list was

Soontir Fel (27)

-Push the Limit (3)
-Hull Upgrade (3)
-Royal Guard TIE (0)
-Autothrusters (2)

Turr Phennir (25)
-Lone Wolf (2)
-Stealth Device (3)
-Royal Guard TIE (0)
-Autothrusters (2)

Bounty Hunter (33)

I faced a fat han and B-wings, a Defender/Interceptor/Advanced list, Brobots, and Corran/Lando, managed to take all 4 games with perfect MOV, though a lot of the latter games was dice luck. I think it's a very strong list that has a few weaknesses (relies pretty heavily on green dice) but can take down most of the meta squads out there

Have you considered using Carnor instead of Turr? Turr is great if you can BR/boost out of range of a turret after shooting, but that's tough to pull off more than a few times a game.

Also, I feel like VI on Carnor is potentially way more scary when flying against something like Soontir or Corran.

Something like this:

Soontir [PTL, AT, SD, title]

Carnor [VI, AT, SD, title]

Bounty Hunter

I don't recommend putting an EU on generic bounty hunters. Their low PS doesn't allow them to take advantage of the boost nearly as much as the named pilots, and focus is going to be much more reliable in most situations.

As an alternative to Carnor I suggest putting Mara on the BH and keeping Turr.

If you take Focus/Evade on the approach (don't joust head on obviously) the BH will very likely make it out of the scrap with decent Hull left and you will have stressed one or more enemy ships.

Squints love stressed ships.
