Brigands, Bandits, and Bastards – A Closer look at the Scum HWKs

By SableGryphon, in X-Wing

There is also the rare combo of Palob + friendly with sensor jammer (Virago viper or IG88). Nice insurance, though I suppose Palob is likely the target anyway.

How about:

STAR VIPER: · Guri (30)

Predator (3)

Autothrusters (2)

· Virago (1)

Sensor Jammer (4)

HWK-290: · Palob Godalhi (20)

Expert Handling (2)

Blaster Turret (4)

Recon Specialist (3)

· Moldy Crow (3)

Y-WING: · Drea Renthal (22)

Ion Cannon Turret (5)

BTL-A4 Y-Wing (0)

Unhinged Astromech (1)

All PS5. Palob draws the fire or makes it though to get damage to stick on others. Drea and Guri can hit pretty hard consistently. Always makes me sad when I encounter RAC though.

That's the main problem with HWKs. They suck against Fat turrets with EU. All the turret has to do is keep boosting its self into range 3 and take no are very weak incoming fire. Hopefully the Twin Laser Turret can help make them a range 3 threat.

I've had a lot of success with hawks. Roark in a Swarm Tactics list is great.

I've got a lot of use out of Palob and Torkil; I prefer Torkil more though. I haven't tried Bonearm yet. My main Xwing collaborator says that I fly the hawk better then any one he's seen. Probably because he hasn't seen many people fly it.

The talk about the dial being bad is over hyped. The ship that has the closest dial to the hawk is the B-wing and that gets played all the time. The difference from the hawk and b-wing being no hard 1s or k-turn are mitigated by being a turret ship.

One crew member that you did not touch on for Dace was Greedo. Dace + Greedo + Determination + ICT comes to 30 points. Against unshielded targets, or targets with only a single shield, it allows you to deal a hit and a crit on every successful attack.

The fact that he's able to deal such consistent damage while also providing solid control makes him a very, very strong ship.

I get how that works for targets with no shield, but for targets with one shield I wouldn't expect Greedo to trigger on Dace's bonus damage since Greedo references "the first time you attack" and the second damage is not part of the attack, but rather a separate ability. Unless you can resolve part of the ion rules (assign the ion token) and then interrupt to use Dace to strip the shield, then assign the damage from the attack.

I have a list that I'm not sure will always fly the best, but is a ton of fun to play.

HAWKY

100 points

PILOTS

Dace Bonearm [Predator, Ion Cannon Turret] (31)

Palob Godalhi [Predator, Blaster Turret, Recon Specialist, Moldy Crow] (33)

Kavil [bomb Loadout, Blaster Turret, R4 Agromech, Veteran Instincts, Proton Bombs] (36)

I can't remember for sure if that's the final list or not, I think I maybe took prox mines on Kavil instead. Not a list I'd likely take to Regionals, but fun to fly.

I worry about the proton bombs on Kavil without VI to go with it. Proton Bombs work best on PS9+ ships. They were devastating on Fett at PS10 for sure.

To be fair he does have VI on his Kavil in that list. :)

Yeah, I misread. Might work. Still a lot of points in Kavil there. Could work, though.

I've yet to attend a tournament but I so want to be that guy who takes 3 HWKs to his first tournament and wins it.

I have a 5 HWK list that's terrifying. :)

5x Generic HWK (faction to your taste) + Autoblaster Turret + Tactician. I might not hurt you at Range 2, but I'm going to make sure you never act again. :)

Oooo... thats evil

That'll catch people off guard, I expect!

The autoblasters to follow up.....hitting people with an autoblaster's not easy.
Once someone's taken 3+ stress tokens, in my experience they tend to go "screw it" and not bother trying to clear them, especially if there are more on the way.

One or two stress tokens tends to nail people to the green maneuvers. Three or more....they can't pull red maneuvers, but are much more ready to do white maneuvers and keep the stress.

I do think trying a full HWK squad would be interesting. It's just a shame the Moldy Crow is a unique title.... (I get why it is, it's one of the best upgrade cards in the game!)

Universe, be warned. Sablegryphon's messing around with shuttles again....

I had a think about this myself, a while ago. The thread with my thought processes is here:
https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/index.php?/topic/136092-scumhawks/

But the list ended up as the following:

Dace Bonearm 35

  • Engine Upgrade
  • Ion Cannon Turret
  • Predator

Palob Godahli 36

  • Engine Upgrade
  • Blaster Turret
  • Opportunist
  • Intelligence Agent
  • Moldy Crow

Torkil Mux 29

  • Shield Upgrade
  • Ion Cannon Turret
  • Greedo

Yesterday I ran a Squawk in my list against Super Dash, X, Z

Kavil - VI, Autoblaster Turret, EU, Unhinged Astromech = 32
Torkil Mux - Ion Cannon Turret, K4 Security Droid = 27
Boba Fett, VI - 41
Went to time, with a modified win for me. All three used their abilities to decent effect, and it ended with the X, Z and Kavil destroyed. Need to learn the Squawk dial better.
Yes, I like that term and I'm running with it.
They're really cool looking ships, and can work really well if you give them some time.

This topic really has me brainstorming scumhawk lists.

I've had some fun with a build that brings two fully modified 4-dice turrets to the table. It takes some skill to pull off, and is vulnerable to stress/control, but really packs a punch:

Kavil (36)
Y-Wing (24), Blaster Turret (4), R4 Agromech (2), Marksmanship (3), Experimental Interface (3)

Palob Godalhi (34)
HWK-290 (20), Opportunist (4), Blaster Turret (4), K4 Security Droid (3), Moldy Crow (3)

Kaa’to Leeachos (17)
Z-95 Headhunter (15), Wingman (2)

Black Sun Soldier (13)

Other lists:

Spice Runner (22)
HWK-290 (16), Ion Cannon Turret (5), Greedo (1)

Dace Bonearm (31)
HWK-290 (23), Veteran Instincts (1), Ion Cannon Turret (5), Tactician (2)

Mandalorian Mercenary (47)
Firespray-31 (35), K4 Security Droid (3), Inertial Dampeners (1), Slave-1 (0), Predator (3), Ion Torpedoes (5)

-

Torkhil Mux (25)
HWK-290 (19), Ion Cannon Turret (5), Greedo (1)

Palob Godalhi (34)
HWK-290 (20), Opportunist (4), Blaster Turret (4), K4 Security Droid (3), Moldy Crow (3)

Kath Scarlet (41)
Firespray-31 (38), Predator (3)

-

Palob Godalhi (31)
HWK-290 (20), Calculation (1), Blaster Turret (4), Recon Specialist (3), Moldy Crow (3)

Torkhil Mux (25)
HWK-290 (19), Ion Cannon Turret (5), Greedo (1)

Spice Runner (22) x 2
HWK-290 (16), Blaster Turret (4), Outlaw Tech (2)

I think I did it both with proton bomb and with a prox mine, I can't remember which version I took to league, but I won with it at league. It's not something I'd take to regionals but fun when Palob has like 15 focus tokens, 3 of which were stolen. :)

I really like that list. I would make a change though... put Engine Upgrade on Dace instead of the Bomb on Kavil. It helps Dace's movement after he's stressed from his ability, and the build is then 99 points.

SableGryphon, many thanks for this article! Excellent analysis and very useful tips and builds. :-) S&V in general is a nasty and annoying faction, but can be so effective, and with your "help" now it has become even nastier... thanks a lot for that! hehe :-P

:)

I'm glad the article helped. The S&V faction needs help right now. It's hands down my favorite faction, but a lot of people don't know what to do with it yet.

I flew Dace with K4, ICT and Determination in a Team Epic. His shots and ability together inflicted 14 damage over the course of the battle. With K4s TL and Focus he is incredibly accurate and should he miss, my Thug Warthogs had ion cannons too...

I especially like your Mux build with Flight instructor and Palob with Expert handling. These are ridiculously fun ways to make your opponent rage...

Palob Godalhi (20)
Expert Handling (2)
Ion Cannon Turret (5)
K4 Security Droid (3)

Torkil Mux (19)
Ion Cannon Turret (5)
Greedo (1)

Kavil (24)
Push the Limit (3)
Blaster Turret (4)
Unhinged Astromech (1)

Binayre Pirate (12)

Total: 99

How does that look? Or drop the pirate for hull upgrades and a moldy crow title?

Or use the more shooter Palob, with the blaster turret. Pewpew.

I haven't tried this one yet but I list-built this one as a Fat-turret Hunter list.

Dace Bonearm-

Outlaw Tech

Moldy Crow

Ion Cannon Turret

(33)

Kaa'To Leeachos-

Wingman

(17)

IG-88B-

Outmaneuver

Ion Cannon

Autothrusters

(44)

94 pts total

So this list is designed to hunt two ship Fat Turret builds. There are 6 points of flexibility built in so that you can customize. Personally I would split them between IG systems and Daces elite. Different opponents would dictate slightly different use of those last 6 pts. If you're facing a Chirpy/Fel type build then the goal is to use the superior mobility of the IG (probably switch Outmaneuver for Lone Wolf, Expert Handling or PTL) to isolate and stay out of arc. With AT and an Evade you've got a lot of survivability. Meanwhile Dace and Leeachos just try to stay close enough for Ion turret shots and Leeachos with Wingman eats stress when Dace needs to pull a red to be in range or when he uses his ability. Two hits is all it takes. Very small margin for error for your opponent. Versus double fatties the IGs role is similar. Use cautuion with Dace and look for an opportunity to run the fatty off the board or into rocks. I try to stay on the other side of asteroids when using an ion cannon on big ships. They get an extra defense die but you only need one to go through to get your two damage (even though it takes two to ionize) and the extra die you'll get on defense from him shooting back through the rock can really help you survive longer. If he's focusing fire solely on Dace try blocking with Leeachos.

I've never tried this build but that's how I envision it working. It may be total crap when put on the board and asked to produce. Let me know how it does if anyone tries it. I don't imagine this list would fare well against other archetypes.

I've never used my HWK, but this thread's definitely inspiring me to give it a try.

Now I just need to repaint it in Black Sun colours...
