The strength of things

By I. J. Thompson, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hi!

I've been scouring the rulebook for an answer to this, but if I've missed it, please point me in the right direction; how tough are general 'objects' in the Star Wars universe?

Here's my situation: I've got an area fenced in with the power fences from Enter the Unknown, pg. 49. The control panel is guarded by a couple of guards, so my players want to just shoot out the poles from a distance.

Now while there's precedent for that type of thing in-universe, I can't help but feel that an expensive perimeter fence would be all but useless if anyone could just casually shoot out the poles.

I've decided to make the poles 'Silhouette -1' because they're very narrow, so that's a difficulty upgrade, but the player has the skill and all the time in the world to aim. So, should I allow these poles to be taken out by laser fire, and if so, what do you think their HT and/or Armour should be?

The rulebook mentions items having three states of damage, a.k.a. condition: minor, moderate, major. (Or something like that.) I would have the player need to make the check with at least three successes to take the pole out completely. Two Advantage can be spent to simulate one success; a Triumph means automatic break. It's cumulative, so he can shoot the poles as many times as he wishes, but he probably doesn't have a silencer, so with every passing shot the odds of discovery go up.

Now, I would have the poles be unaffected at minor damage, maybe just bent a little out of place. Major damage means it's reliably out. However, at moderate, I would say it shorts out with the chance of reactivating at a later time, such as when they're trying to make their desperate escape.

Just as an observation: that fence probably isn't a military item, and so wouldn't be hardened to that extent. It strikes me more as something you buy to keep critters out of your camp.

So capt raspberry is probably pretty close to RAW, if not dead on. Unless you want a more permanent variation, in which case you give the poles a couple points of HT to represent the permacrete pole housings.

Thank you for the help, gents. :)

Raspberry, you wouldn't happen to have a page number on that, would you? I just can't seem to find it...

Brilliant. Thanks again!

In case you haven't found it yet, pages 158–159: Weapon Maintenance.

IMO, I’d give them Soak and WT, not Armor and HT. Decide how many shots from a “standard” weapon should be allowed to take them out, and factor accordingly. If you want to make them really tough, you could say that they are Soak 10 and maybe WT 20, or something like that. One hit from a Blaster Rifle would be enough to do a little damage to them, but probably not that much. It would take a much bigger weapon to destroy them in a single shot.

Of course, YMMV.

I say let them try to shoot the fence, but there is probably some kind of sensor attached so that anyone inside is alerted to a problem. Perhaps this could send reinforcements en route, or at least a probe droid or something to investigate.

Good use of threat/dispair!

Military grade fence likely do have armor and hull trauma. as what good are fences infantry can just shoot down.
