Y-Wing repaint and conversion

By Jaffamaster, in X-Wing

In the original movies we see the stripped down Y-Wing without any fairing due to maintenance saving time without placing it back on (if you read the stuff from the Wikia page). After reading through the forums for the game, one person wished they could see the Y-Wing with the fairings on, so I decided to take the challenge. While not the true Clone Wars looking ship, this one may be considered between Episode III and IV or a current Rebel heavy fighter/bomber with a very motivated support team (must have been Marines, haha). Anywho, here is the stock ship verses the one I did. About three days of work adding the copper wire (cutting off the current stuff and then adding the wire, even though you can not see a big difference), hollowing out the support frames, smoothing the molding lines and a bunch of other things. My original post was on dakkadakka.com and I decided to finally post it here ( http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-76613-47029_Jaffamaster%27s%20Y-wing%20Modification%20And%20Repaint.html ).

That's some impressive work.

I haven't heard of this at all. You prompted me to do some Wikia reading.

Y-wings used during the Galactic Civil War were stripped-down, with most exterior armor plating having been removed.

This kinda blows my mind. I haven't watched any Clone Wars, but now I think I need to in order to understand the universe better.

Although I'm not a huge fan of the clonewars Y-wings, I like the look of yours. Excellent conversion, and I love how it looks completely different but still recognizable, great job

I really like that, impressive work. It gives me the partially stripped down feel between the clone wars and a new hope.

Might steel this idea :)

Not bad at all! If you had included some panel lines on the fairing/armour it would have looked even better, basically it would look more in tune with the cockpit area.

That's some impressive work.

Ditto to all of this! I didnt know about the Y-wings being stripped down either.

Great concept and execution! I love your version of the "paneled-up" Y.

I think it looks awesome!

If you do another one, maybe use a scribing tool to scribe some panel lines into the plasticard.

Absolutely excellent! Way better than the Clone Wars version.

Thank you all for the feedback! If I get around to it, I may try doing panel lines on this model since I'm moving onto another miniature project, the E-Wing. I'll look into getting a scribing tool, since I kept cutting the plastic when I tried before.

That's some impressive work.

It's more the Rebels ended up leaving off the aesthetic panelling on them: Y-wings are so maintenance intensive, especially the old worn out Rebel BTL-S3s and BTL-A4s (the Clone Wars one is an older model called the BTL-B) that they ended up just leaving them off.

This is amazing. Great work!

My word, that is fantastic! This has been on my to-do list for ages... Excellent work!

I went over to daka and looked at your pictures there. Didn't see any of the underside after it was painted. Any chance you could post one of those

That's a really nice work !

I hate painting tose y wing. I will strip my previous paint on them and try to do some conversion like yours.

Good job and beautiful paint <3

I really like the design. Between yours and the pictured Y-wing above, it would give the various third party designers/manufacturers inspiration to make the fighters for the game.

Heck, the armored ones can represent the hull/shield upgrades.

Oh if someone made a model like that image? I'd buy a handful in a heartbeat!

That is my next project! And this time I'll post pictures of the underside and have panel lines.

What is the material ppl use? I would to start trying some things and where to buy the material

I'm trying my hand at being a necromancer of old forum posts, and I thought here would be as good of any place to start. Almost two years or so ago I modified another Y-Wing for more of a "snubfighter" look, but with an increased bomb load, and streamlined bomb/thermal detonator dispensers. On the bench I'm planning on converting another one into a courier that was seen in the Star Wars comics.
