Labrynth of Ruin Solo Playthrough and Questions.

By Omnislash024, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Man, I feel like pulling my hair out. This quest will not end. And it's only the first scenario.

So here's the setup. Splig, required Group Ettins, open group Achurayas. All large monsters also have +1 Damage.

Basically both sides have met each other on the two lane path. The Heroes were pretty far advanced, almost at the end. Splig however has also managed to make his way into the pathway. The heroes are on their heels right now. The thing that really might have been their undoing is when Splig attacked Grisban. He has both the Sun Stone and Her Majesty's Malice equipped, (totally legal.) So he slapped Grisban for 3 damage and then attacked him again. The second attack launched him into orbit with Splig's knockback ablity. He ended up landing smack dab in the middle of the Achurayas who then turned around and clawed him to death. (almost near death. ) I only had two heroes drink from the fountain, both Dez and Logan but they both got Koed. One of them needs to go back and drink. The heroes on the other hand have managed to clear the Ettins, so they have made that progress. But Grisban is getting Loed every round he's revived. Ulma's too busy shooting Splig with arrows everytime he gets up.

Basically it's a stalemate. The Achurayas keep coming, the heroes keep standing up, Logan keeps trying to move Splig backwards and the end will be decided on who slips up first.

Current Quest: Fury of the Tempest.

See above post for earlier details.

This quest has been going on for days. Technically I have devoted about 1-2 hours to it per day this week. And the bloody thing is still going on. I don't really know who designed this quest but perhaps they should have tested it a bit more thoroughly. I've basically sat in the two lane path the whole time, having the heroes fend off an endless wave of Achurayas while keeping Splig knocked out. There are times also where I can revive Splig and move him three spaces with Unseen Wings. This is countered with Logan using his whip and spending Surges whenever rolled to move Splig a space backward.

And I can't get a bloody break for the heroes. Just as they seemed in a good position to actually trying for the open field, Splig gets rezzed for 6 hearts and nobody is able to KO him because of the stupid Blue X on the dice and him rolling 3 Shields on the defense die. So the water gets poisoned and at this point, the only logical way for the heroes to actually win now is if Logan manages not to get Koed. Serena was keeping things in hand but then she got removed by an Arachurya.

At this point I have Grisban of all people finally in the open field. He's by himself, but If I can manage to Rev him and keep him alive, I might be able to grab a Search token. To win I will need to grab them all though. It will be a Herculean effort, like it hasn't been already. Even if I don't win the encounter, I just want the heroes to get some search tokens.

...I'm basically at a point though where I may just scrap this entire campaign. For one thing, I believe the heroes are at a severe disadvantage. They've basically lost every single quest at this point, two of them being rumor quests. They also have not been able to get any decent amount of search tokens. The only reason they even have anything, comes off of secret rooms. (Ulma's Bow of Bone and Grisban's Bearded Axe.) The OL has managed to Knock out almost all of them every single quest, so the amount of Plot tokens he also has is staggering.

OL beat us 6 quests to 2 in LOR. We won the finale, though.

As a Overlord I won every single Quest in the LOR campaign except for the intermezzo. Though I must admit most quest were really close.

Quest is being retconned again. Basically I'm starting over from the travel step. Me and my dad had a conversation about this quest and we suspect this quest is a broken quest. Or heavily OL favored. So I'm going to see if it stalemates again. I tend to think it's OL favored, because the OL will always have the maximum open group total and Splig. Plus two of the Search tokens are sitting right on the OL's spawn area.

The first encounter is OL favored, but it doesn't affect much the second encounter. Heroes will go anyways after Splig and the two objective tokens on the upper side of the map. I don't think you should redo the quest regardless of the result of that first encounter.

Thanks, but it's already a done deal. Besides when I was resetting, I discovered that somehow some of the OL Cards I left out had suddenly been shuffled back in. Not sure how much difference that might have made. Besides that, there were some missed triggers and botched movements. I just want to see if this plays out a bit differently. I'll take whatever out come this time.

Anyway, question time. With the Arachurya ability, Pincer Attack. Can you use the ability more then once if an OL card says the creature can attack again?

Edited by Omnislash024

When any game effect instructs a figure to perform an attack, it referes to a normal attack action. Pincer attack is a special action that contains an attack, so you couldn't use it with, for example, a Frenzy. If somehow you make that monster 'Ravage', it could perform two attacks during its turn, so it could perform in this case two Pincer Attacks during that turn. What were you refering to, exactly? If it is something very specific, maybe it is worth to confirm it to be sure.

The Overlord Card "Flurry".

Then, you could use the card while Arachyura is using Pincer Attack, but the next "extra" attack will be a regular attack action (with an added Green die, though).

And then, just to double check, when using the OL card "Dirty Fighting" the effect only targets one hero as opposed to two or effects both targets of the attack?

Like most else that adds to the attack- damage or surge or range- it applies to all affected, since there is only 1 attack roll. So a sentinel targets a weak healer and you play dirty fighting. If you use the surge on fire breath, ALL affected need to defend against whatever +prey on the weak+ pierce 1.

Their own might and archetype are not considered.

Gotcha. Alright thanks for the answers. I was pretty sure that was the correct usage, but i just wanted to double check.

Fury of The Elements quest has now concluded. Here are the details:

Scenario1: This time, I grouped the heroes up pretty tightly and allowed them to advance slowly so they could defend themselves from the waves of Arachuryas. They made very good progress. Splig got knocked out in the pathway again and it was slow going. The heroes had to keep using actions to keep Splig knocked out. Ulma managed to one shot the Master Ettin though when it was discovered she had LOS on him. The Minion Ettin was reduced to 1 Life as well. It was around this point that I felt confident to have Logan sprint toward the field. He managed to search the first token, but as the OL it was mimicked. I also managed to move Grisban onto the field of Lightning as well. Logan used his feat in an attempt to kill the Minion Ettin. The Minion Ettin survived off three attack attempts ( 2 Misses and 1 Heavy Shielded defense roll. This left Logan exposed and he was subsequently Flurry attacked, Arachurya attacked and Lightning Bolted into a KO. The Minion Ettin then KOed him whenever he rezzed himself. When the Volucrux Reaver was killed, Grisban ended up with the search card, which turned out to be a secret room. At this point, Splig survived a turn without being Knocked out. An Unseen Wings and a Blinding Speed allowed him to poison the water and walk off the board.

Total Search Tokens revealed: 0

Scenario 2: The heroes faced Elementals with Aurium Plating and Huge Monsters who could do +1 Damage. Open group: Ettins.

Dez ran down the central pathway to pick up the first Token. That Token was of course a Mimic Volocrux Reaver. Ultimately it was defeated and the heroes managed to pick up a Fire Flask. Meanwhile the Goblins searched both Objective tokens at the top most exit and came away with one Blue Objective Token, which was given to Splig. The Heroes spent most of the time fending off the wave of Goblins while trying to penetrate Elementals that were immune to Ranged attacks, had +2 health and were immune to Pierce. Needless to say they were hard to get by. a Goblin managed to Scamper it's way past the heroes and got into the Bottom Hallways. It managed to snag an Objective Token. The heroes had made their way into the bottom central room by then and killed him before he snagged anything else. The central token was searched by Logan.....which turned into a Volocrux Reaver. It was defeated and Logan's ability netted him a treasure chest which turned out to be Elven Boots. The boots were given to Grisban ( is it wrong to give a Dwarf Elven Boots?). Logan made his way to bottom left room. At this point, Splig and the goblins brought the hate. Although Serena moved toward the bottom so as to avoid getting knocked out, The master Goblin chased her down and took her out of the equation. The rest of heroes moved down into the bottom central room. Then it went south. The heroes missed nearly every attack. The last token was a Mimic that Koed Logan. The Goblins came down and pretty much Koed everybody. Splig in particular used a nasty combination on Ulma, using Valindra's Bane, Flurry, and Dirty Fighting to Knock her out and Knock her back with three attacks. The Volocrux Reaver marched up to an Elemental which used Fire to kill it, The token was given to Dezra, who was prompyly Koed by the Master Goblin. Splig picked up the Blue token, Got the Gauntlets and used Blinding Speed to get past an Elemental. The Heroes now had to fight their way past in order to get to him, but on the next turn, The OL played Unholy Ritual, netting Unseen Wings. Unseen Wings, Blinding Speed and another move action and Splig was out the door.

Result: Overlord Wins. Obtains the Gauntlets Relic and now has a total of 8 Threat Tokens.

The Heroes came away with only 50 gold and some Elven Boots.

Thoughts: The first encounter is heavily OL sided, there is no doubt in my mind. There will always be a bottleneck that takes place on the small pathway. In fact, this quest will most likely be over before the heroes even see the Field of Lightning. While it might be a unique concept, it'll hardly ever see play. Splig also will almost always be able to get past the heroes. Even when KOed, the Heroes will have to advance forward, meaning at some point he's going to wind up behind them. One wrong dice roll and the encounter is pretty much over then. As for the second encounter, I think it is more evenly favored. Better decisions need to be made as the heroes. They were sorta put upon with the incredibly buffed Elementals. Advice to any hero players- when possible always avoid this quest.

Next Quest: Back From the Dead

Current Quest: Back from the Dead

The first encounter is over, but I not really sure who actually won the encounter. The heroes managed to kill four Goblin Witchers- hence 4 fatigue tokens. The question though is whether or not Serena, who is considered a hero figure, is counted as the total number of heroes equaling to the fatigue counters to win. It is a question though I am wondering about and would love to have some clarification over.

That being said, The encounter is being treated as an OL victory.

Details on quest: The Travel step was ecspecially hard on Grisban. He took two fatigue from a rushing river, got poisoned by spiders and was Burned by Valyndra as she flew overheard. Logan and Ulma also were inflicted by Valyndra's Rumor Card and picked up the Burning Conditions as well. They were hard pressed for time and never really discarded the Burning Condition, though Ulma's Elixirs helped clear almost everyone of it except Logan. The heroes managed to get inside the cabin just as the Goblins burst through the door. An Unseen Wings moved all the zombies inside the Cabin as well. Luckily the heroes were able to clear most of the monsters and succeeded in bagging three out of the 4 Search Tokens. In the end, it came down to 1 heart of difference, as The last Goblin attacked managed to survive on one heart. The only reason the monsters actually totaled more was the Search token that turned into a Reaver.

Of course... I am counting Serena when it comes to how many Fatigue tokens the heroes actually need to win, so maybe they did actually win. But I don't know.

Moving onto the second scenario.

Edited by Omnislash024

I don't think Serena is counted as a Hero for victory conditions..

She does not. She is not a hero for quest rules.

EDIT: That's an important point about allies- they're only considered heroes for hero and monster abilities, attacks, and Overlord cards (same as familiar figures and NPCs "treated as heroes".) For every other purpose including quest rules, plot cards, group limits, travel cards, etc, Serena is just an ally and is not counted as a "hero."

There are one or two Overlord cards that do not count her (or other things) as heroes- for example, Bloodlust. Since you don't draw an OL card for defeating Serena, you can't play Bloodlust to draw extra.

Edited by Zaltyre

Alright, then the heroes are the winner.

Second Encounter: Back from the Dead.

The Overlord replaced the open group with the Valyndra Agent, so the Bog had that with both Splig equipped with the Sun Stone and Valyndra's Fury and Ariad equipped with the Storm Gauntlets. As this fight did not seem at all very reasonable for the heroes to even attempt, their objective was to gain as many search tokens as possible. To that end they succeeded in getting 3 out of 4, but only because the OL drew the Mimic card on the previous turn ( by knocking out a hero.) The heroes started out by removing the Goblin Witcher group on the first initial turn. The OL had the red token at the start of the quest. With the 3 heroes starting out the quest with the Cursed condition, he gained extra movement points and was able to move 3 spaces a turn for three turns. The OL also was able to replace the Goblin Witchers whom he used to harass the heroes. The heroes most likely stayed in the first area too long. Grisban attempted to go through an Overgrowth, but was repelled viciously. Dezra used her Teleportation Rune to get into the small pathway at the bottom to nab the search token. Decidedly, the overgrowth connecting the Bog to the first main area was removed. By then some more of the open group was spawned and so the Arachuryas kept the heroes at bay. Dezra failed her knowledge check ( 4) twice in a row to move through the bottom overhgrowth. Eventually she got through, battered and poisoned. On the Overlord's next to last turn, the monsters managed to knock out every hero except Grisban. No one even came close to Ariad.

Outcome: The Overlord wins Back from the Dead.

The Interlude approaches...

Ok so as the Overlord, I have picked the Fortune and Glory Interlude Quest. I though it might be more trying for the heroes to attempt. In anycase here we go with FFG's misinterpretation of instructions.

In the Quest Rules, it says I can't use Large Monsters. However Shadow Dragons are a viable choice because they are not LARGE, they are MASSIVE. So here is a question of whether or not they are an appropriate open group to be used in this quest. Any thoughts?

Wrong. There are 'Medium' (barghest, ..), Huge (Ettins, Merriods) and Massive (Shadow Dragons, Crypt Dragons) monsters. Those three groups are all 'Large' monsters

Wrong. There are 'Medium' (barghest, ..), Huge (Ettins, Merriods) and Massive (Shadow Dragons, Crypt Dragons) monsters. Those three groups are all 'Large' monsters

Yeah.... so they are....

It sometimes confuses me as well. :P

*Cough8 in anycase.... I'll be using Corpse Drakes.

Wrong! They are called Carrion Drakes, not Corpse Drakes! :D :D
