So being a pretty new game, I wasn't expecting to win any matches but expected or hoped to have some fun.
After playing against a friend who's playing rebels in our campaign, I decided on using a Vader list as he's quite powerful.
I took the following
Vader
Royal Guard
Imperial Officer
imperial Officer
Probe Droid
Storm Troopers
Coming out to 39 points left me with the ability to bid and gain initiative most games. Also since I only own one core set, I couldn't bring in Four Imperial Officers (hence the probe droid).
My command deck was made up of the standard fair of cards, focusing on keeping Vader around and keeping him moving/fighting most of the time.
Rounds 1-3 I can recall being quite fun, and generally pretty even in the points. The most memorable match was against a General Weiss, it was insane the amount of lucky rolls and placement issues we had.
On to round four (again I thinking I wouldn't have done as well as I had so far) I faced off the only other 3-0 player. His team is one I will remember as it was just amazing to see how well it did. Round one he was able to focus both of his Eweb elites, and one was able to shoot at range 9 to kill one of my royal guards. There was my sign that the match was going down hill!!
Broke to top four and I was in second place, the guy in first wasn't feeling well and had a two or three hour drive back so he dropped. (He already had a ticket to get into the event at Gencon I found out).
I face off against the Royal Guard Champion team I beat previously, this time we both know a little more about what we can bring. I get CRAZY lucky in my defense against his three attacks and take a total of three damage. Vader was not so kind on the return volley.
Then I face off against a Rebel Squad. I make some DUMB maneuver points and he is able to get a holocron off the bat. Since the match doesn't have a time limit, I figure we just have to go until its last man standing, my fault for not realizing you still play to 40 points. We exchange fire and I've got Vader, a droid, an officer, and a royal guard left to his Luke and Gideon. Hoping to pull my lightning it never comes and he's able to use Luke's Command card to ready his deployment and get him over and destroy a probe droid, he wins!
It was a great long day, and now I understand how you need to READ the mission cards carefully and not assume something. I could not attend Gencon anyway, and he is able to go so I'm glad someone was able to use the pass.
I do look forward to seeing more expansions and a more diverse field of characters, we didn't seem to have two identical teams, but some similar teams. There was not a 4 RG 4 IMP, which I'm glad there wasn't as it seems nasty to play against!
