The Bandit card says he will not attack if you pay him 1 gold, if you do, is the gold discarded or placed with the Bandit for another character to claim if he defeats the Bandit.

IIRC, the Bandit card says discard the gold.
l just checked & it says to pay him 1 gold.
I checked and saw that I answered discard the gold in another Bandit thread. So I'm sticking with that

Since the Merchant saw action (okay, bit of an overstatement, he was killed off by the Ghoul pretty quickly), I might've been influenced by his card. His ability to pay off Monsters and Dragons has the word discard in it.
Yes the Bandit card should've read "pay (discard)".
