Or, you know, Fly Casual.
First Regionals and Rethinking List, Nerves, Doubts and Jitters
heh, is it considered flying casual to make sure your opponent always takes actions and remind them of any abilities that could help them, but to make sure you beat them at their best?
I agree with the all the previous posters! Take what you LIKE to fly, not what you feel you need to fly. You will surprise people, because this is a game that you can do well in if you fly your list well. A friend and I are also attending our first regional tomorrow and are both pretty excited. We aren't taking netlists, just what we like to fly and what we can have fun with all day. Can't wait to see how well I can do in the higher competition level as well. Don't forget to drink lots of water!
Here's hoping your list isn't 7 tie fighters... that will melt your brain after 6 rounds. Best of luck tomorrow!
I am sure your on the way to or at Regionals, remember to breath and have fun, Its just a room filled with nerds that love x-wing there is nothing to fear but fear itself.
HAVE A GREAT TIME, AGAIN BREATH.
After it is all said and done buy some ice cream and tell us what happened.
Er, you might want to keep that breathing in check. Not everyone takes a shower
Though normally it's those silly magic players sitting across the way that the stench originates from.
Not everyone takes a shower
I was at the FFG Event Center for regionals and I have to say the air was very clear, with nearly no BO issues.
Considering there was 80+ people there and not lot more room for more, that was very nice...
Here's a pic of it, I was on a table on the bottom right of the room. All those people in the light blue shirts are part of the Twin Cities X-Wing facebook group in case anyone wonders.

I can also say I had an absolute blast. Everyone was laid back and had some great games. Finished 22nd out of 82? with a 4-2 record and 714 MoV.
Edited by VanorDMNationals though? So I have my first regionals coming up this Saturday and I am getting nervous. I have an unconventional list that is fun to play and has been undefeated against those in my local area (less than a dozen people.) I kept going back and forth between my list and doing something more main stream to what is being played in the top 8's for many of the other regionals.
For those who have gone to regionals... is it basically the more "competitive" people that go? Will I be facing nothing but a stream of fat turrerts or auto thrusting arc dodging phantoms? (Since that's my impression of what most of the top 8 at the various regionals are.)
Any words of advice to calm me down and get rid of these blasted jitters?
Can you take beer to the regionals? I think that might help...
Oh and if anyone else is in my boat... read this thread, which I found helpful for advice as well:
Regionals are the highest level of competition you'll face outside of World's.
Touché.
Meet new people, make new friends, and have fun. Take a list that you feel comfortable with and you'll have a good day. See you there. ![]()
I may attend the regionals here in Vancouver in July, but I haven't made up my mind on that one. I haven't managed to win a game yet in a friendly tournament or in a league, though a few of the games have come really close. I can't help but feel I should shore up my play before I dive in to something like this. At the same time, what better way to learn than by playing against other people?
Either way, the prospect of a tournament like this is pretty exciting.
So my friend went 3-3 with his list that he actually like to fly on our regional. His list was a "convenience store" list at PS 7/11 of Keyan/Han. Many silly references to both convenience stores and star wars were made and he had a blast! I went 5-1 with my list and also had a blast... How did you do with yours?
Yeah, I'd like to hear how it went.
I went 3 - 3 (one of the wins was a modified win.) I think they said there were 96 people playing...
My list (99 points) was as follows:
Aggressor IG-88B w/ VI, FCS, Mangler Cannon, and Hot Shot Blaster (list was made before I had autothrusters and I never updated it. I think autothrusters would have been an improvement)
HWK-290 w/ Blaster Turrets & Recon Specialist x2
Palob (focus & evade stealing w/in range 2) -- Everyone learned after I took the first token to stop focusing (except round 1, which was a swarm and I could only take 1 focus)
Torkil (makes one ship combat lvl 0 w/in range 2) -- For 90% of the time, his ability was not utilized because most of the ships I faced were either PS2 or PS1.
First match/modified win: It was my first time flying against a full swarm (tie fighters). That was an extremely slow moving match. I am glad that overall the meta has moved away from full swarms.
Second match/win: YYBB w/ tacticians and flechette torps. After the second round of combat, I was able to stay out of arc and dodge the range 2 issue. I won this match.
Third match/full loss: BBBBZ. I lured them into the asteroids, but maneuvers were difficult and my HWKs lost actions, so no turrets. I wasn't able to focus fire effectively (ie more than one round) and although 2 of the B's and the Z had only 1 or 2 hull points, I was not able to kill them. I was annihilated. It wasn't pretty.
Lunch break... switched to shorts and a loose fitting t-shirt (freakin' dress comfortably because it's going to be hot and the a/c will not keep up!!!!)
Fourth Match/loss: Fat Han (C3P0, Luke, Predator, Engine Upgrade, Falcon title) and ZZZ. I made one mistake early, which cost me dearly, Palob stole an evade from Han, used both his foci to damage him. Han was PS0 due to Torkil, returned fire, I used the evade token to zero the damage, and he Luke'd me. (Grrr! Forgot about the "gunner.") This time, he hit me 3 times (one crit) and I didn't evade any. To make matters worse, the crit was a direct damage, so down to 1 hull point. He died the next round. I did kill Han and took out one of the Z's. But the dice favored a range 3 shot that ended the game on my IG.
Fifth match/win: Leebo (w/ Determination +other upgrades) and upgraded BBs. Made a movement error early on with my IG which almost cost me the game. I came back.
Sixth Round/loss: IG-88B and Boba. Even though we were both really tired by this point, this match was actually my favorite. I thought his build was more unique than the others. Originally, I tried to take out IG-88B first; however, he had autothrusters and was able to evade everytime. I did get set up to shoot him point blank in his side; however, he used inertial dampeners and remained out of arc. After that, I went after Boba and killed him (50 pts), but I had lost Palob and IG by then and his IG made short work of what was left of Torkil.
Most people underestimated my HWKs. Always going after IG88 first. I love asteroids and fly around them effectively. The swarms were the hardest, because if I bumped, my HWKs could not focus and so could not use their turrets. (This was partially negated by the Tie Swarm that they all kept focusing. Palob could steal a focus and still fire, but was unable to modify dice.)
The biggest disappoint I had really was with the top 8. 3 Deci + Arc Dodgers (2 Soontir's, 1 Whisper), 3 Brobots (B&D and B&C, didn't see what the 3rd person was flying) and 2 Fat Falcons (one was a Chewie, didn't see the other.)
If you want to be a top player, you better play the meta.
Highlight of the night was winning a door prize and getting a free Firespray (I could have picked Rebel Aces, but I wanted a second Firespray.) And, of course, getting the Boba Fett alt art card.
Overall I had fun and it was definitely interesting to fight builds that my very small "pond" of players don't usually play. I would have liked to have performed better. I do like my list because it messes with people and forced them to change how they normally play. I liked messing with them. But it isn't a competitive list. I have another regional in Raleigh (#3 on the wait list) and I might try switching out to Autothrusters and seeing how that helps. Also thinking about making a Double Deci (have to buy another one) or a Double Firespray (scum version, trying the build out tomorrow night.) We'll see.
Oh and yeah, once the first match starts, the nerves go away. It's just the anticipation.
