So what is all that junk hanging off of AF's and Nebs?

By Gibarian, in Star Wars: Armada

Y'know... the "beard" section at the front of the Nebulon, and the similar components hanging from the belly of the Assault Frigate.

According to the background, are these sections an essential part of the ships' hulls? Or are they modular fittings that can be added or removed? If I were to chop them off and/or rearrange the stack would that still be semi-canonical, or an unjustified flight of fancy?

It's where rebels keep the special sauce.

those are the thingermajigs and the whatsitcalleds, essential components to any space-faring ship

but seriously, don't remove them. They're the only things keeping the neb from looking like some demented, ball and chain spermatozoid and the fattie from looking like a seal with really tiny arms

oh hey, google!

See!! That's where the MAIN BRIDGE is! And that's a little essential

Sensors mostly

Those are the S-Foils. They're a huge pain in the butt to lock them into attack position so they just don't bother. You need like a special set of wrenches and everything, I mean, who has the time?

I'm debating cutting them from the guppy. But the Nebulon design is great.

They are called Greeble, wiggets, or Nurnies

original Imperial Star Destroyer was constructed from a plywood frame and adorned with sheet styrene. Panel lines were cut into the sheet styrene, but essentially that left the ship looking extremely bare. Hundreds of model kits were purchased and the model department promptly took pieces of the model kits and cut them up and stuck them along with more sheet styrene to the surfaces of the ship. The ultimate effect was to make the ship appear more believable to the viewer through the addition of these large areas of ancillary details. The greebles themselves served no purpose other than to fill space and individually had no definite function to the design of the ship, although later each greeble was given a specific function by either fans or technical illustrators for fan guides

Some sources imply that the Forward section of the Nebulon-B is actually Modular, with "pods" inserted for functions needed.

the rule of cool is hard at work, as is the norm in star wars :P

I really like the stock Frigate, but since I'm going to have two I'm thinking of doing some modifications to the second one.

The first one will be left mostly unmolested. Although I'm tempted to put a bunch of little bubble/nodule things all over it (like the ones on Mon Cal ships). The main thing keeping from doing it is finding/casting enough identical nodules to pull the look off. I'm sure if I took a stroll through a crafts store I could find some kind of oval gemstone-y things that would work.

I always assumed they were modular, and generally containers full of important Rebel cargo. These guys are always on the run, so it makes sense!

I'm going to be removing the dangly bits from my second AF. And then moving the Flight stand connector over and using a straight flight stand. The skewed stand on the normal AF bothers me... Its irrational but there we are... :D

Wierdo :P. I think it's neat.

its for the griswold family space vacation to wallyplanet. Its where they put grandma and tie up the dog.

First of all, no neutering the nebulon.

first we have a turbolazer, followed by a plot device, next is something some 70's guy kitbashed and stuck on there cause it looks cool. then they smoked some weed, and some other stuff laying around looked cool as well. they decided that A.) it did not matter what it did, so long as it looked cool, B.) This movie is likely to tank, and therefore noone will care but them. C.) noone else would know what they did either.

Add more funky bits, and repeat. creative process at ILM in the early days. while the process seems a little unortohodox, it's hard to argue with the product!

Maybe the big guns putt off a lot of heat or radiation, so they put them down in the "beard" to keep them away from the crew, but then they put the bridge down there? well, that's just weird.

and the magic dust. you know, for the reindeers.

HAHA this is probably the best explanation of what these things are. I always laugh at whatever silly cutaways and design layouts companies and people produce for these things because most likely the original artists were just trying to make the models cool looking on a low(and dwindling) fx budget. I'm not saying that they didn't have an idea of what the things could be but they were probably more concerned about budget and telling a story through aesthetics. The audience filled in the rest.

I always thought the NB was a cool design idea (makes me think scrappy chunks of stuff slapped together by some rebels in secret) but seems silly and weak next to a ISD. I guess that was the point though... the contrast.

They had a lot of extra model kits after greebing up the star destroyer.

Also, I would like to think of it as customizations to each ship. Imperial nebs might look totally different, but rebel ones have opened up the hull to fit all sorts of expanded bays and store rooms and stuff that they might need as a rebel base of operations.

Who the eff puts the fresh water tanks right up front and the beidge in the middle.

Some demented design artist. It's such a cool uniques design though.

But the interpretations are fun, regardless of whether the designers intended functionality.

Oh yeah totally agree. The fact that we are still talking about them and that they are so iconic says something about those fx and concept guys.

Water is very good at absorbing heat, and is very plentiful. Maybe it doubles as an emergency heatsink for shields or guns or something?

And does it really need all that water? Maybe, maybe they are "water tanks" but don't actually HOLD water... But something else instead!

Krill for when Ackbar comes aboard.
