Can anyone shed some light, pun intended, as to how or when Darth Vader might have broken his neck. I never noticed this until today as I was watching ROTJ. It looks like he has a replacement vertebrae or something in his neck. Was this ever addressed in any book or comic or somewhere else.

Not directly, it was the shaking his head in disbelief thing that did him in. I suffered the exact same injury the exact same way, so I feel his pain.

Sidious had them replaced during Vaders full cyborging process. Despite the armour being enhanced with sith magic, they used very heavy star ship armour for the armour plates. His orignal bones wouldnt last long because of the compresion caused by the armour, so Sidious had some of Vaders bone replaced, including shoulder and ribcage possible collar. What wasnt replaced was made stronger. Vader is basically a Spartan 2 from HALO. Most of his internal organs were enhanced or replaced with bionics. Besides his strength being enhanced with cybernetics and the force, his musles are pumped with a Sith musal enhancer.
Ahh. That makes so much more sense. And thinking of Vader as a Spartan Sith Lord supersoldier makes him even cooler.
