How do you add [Crit], [Hit], [Focus], and [Evade] symbols to text in this forum?

By DraconPyrothayan, in X-Wing

I'm going to be starting a new treatise soon, and will be using these thoroughly, and very much do NOT want to merely use placeholders, particularly as I'll be using them quite often in my post.

I've seen some of y'all being able to put some into text proper, and wish to learn your secrets.
Halp!

I don't know how to do it myself, but if you find a post that has them, you can quote the text that contains them, then using the "lightswitch" in the editor window to toggle the wysiwyg editor, and see what code is being used...

At least some of the people using them have (or know where they are) images on the web that the link to with img tags.

I found these in a post:

ab.pngaf.pngah.pngac.pngdf.pngde.pngdb.png

I don 't know how well they fit inline with text, but a quick test?

blank attack: ab.png, Focus Attack: af.png, hit: ah.png, crit: ac.pngdf.pngde.pngdb.png etc.

You could always crop them and then save them somewhere ah2.png then link to the new ones.

That might help.

Maybe. ah1.png

Perhaps not perfect, but you get the idea: ah2.pngac1.pngaf1.pngab1.pngde1.pngdf1.pngdb1.png

Yep, I hosted those on my server and posted them.

They're the images VASSAL uses for dice.

The links are as follows:

Attack, Blank: [img=http://kbelisle.ca/XWDI/ab.png]
Attack, Focus: [img=http://kbelisle.ca/XWDI/af.png]
Attack, Hit: [img=http://kbelisle.ca/XWDI/ah.png]
Attack, Crit: [img=http://kbelisle.ca/XWDI/ac.png]
Defense, Focus: [img=http://kbelisle.ca/XWDI/df.png]
Defense, Evade: [img=http://kbelisle.ca/XWDI/de.png]
Defense, Blank: [img=http://kbelisle.ca/XWDI/db.png]

The best we could possible get is for FFG to add dice symbols to the available Smileys!

EDIT: I switched the triangle images with the square images, so now all our posts are screwed up, hehe.

I just added some small versions that should look good inline with text! They're not perfect though, so I might try and clean them up later, but the links won't change.

Lorem Ipsum is simply afs.png dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum abs.png has been the industry's standard dummy text ahs.png ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley acs.png of type and scrambled it to dfs.png make a type specimen book. It has survived des.png not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially dbs.png unchanged.

First I was like afs.png

Then it abs.png

And my mind was all acs.png

Yeah, I can see myself growing to like these.

Would these work better?

It loses the triangle/D8 shape, but looks better in text.

PS: Don't use these yet. If people like 'em I'll replace the small triangle ones with them.

The squares are my favorite of the bunch.

I'd love if FFG would make both dice and all cards available in the forums. Kinda like many Hearthstone forums makes the card pop up on mouseover when you write the card name in a forum post. (Follow the link and try mousing over the colored texts to get an idea on how this works, and how useful it is.)

I imagine reading fleet lists would be much easier if you could simply write Soontir Fel or Royal Guard TIE, and the actual card would show when you mouse over the text. This would probably be even more useful for the LCG forums.

The height crit.png is pretty good for going hit.png inline with text focus.pngfocus.png

FFG should add these as smileys at the same time as they give us new avatar pictures...oh wait...we may be waiting a while.

Out of interest is there a cap on the number of images in a post? Because that could become an issue.

Now we need just each of the dial maneuvers in white/red/green.

I considered going symbol-only (no background color), but it has 2 problems:

  1. You can't represent a blank die result.
  2. The site has 2 themes, a light one and a dark one. Making an icon that will be easily visible on both is harder.

But you can, though:

Hit hit.png Crit crit.png Blank Focus focus.png

But as for people using the dark site background, well, I have nothing for that.

As a person using the dark site background, black still looks pretty snazzy.

I really like the red/green square versions as well, though.

Just gave acs.png a try. I like it, but I do prefer the in-line look of the squarish ones.
Plus, being colored, you don't have to worry about which background the poser is using.

However, on the triangular blips, there's actually a white outline, which is kind of distracting to those who use the older format.

I just switched the small triangle images with the small square images, so now the images in previous posts are all switched.

In case anyone got confused reading the thread... Hehe.

Check this out!

This is how Han Solo, with Luke Skywalker Crew and Predator works:

  • First, I rolled: .png?a=bbhf
  • So I used Han's ability and got: .png?a=chfb
  • Defender rolled: .png?d=bee
  • So Gunner triggered, and I rolled: .png?a=hhfb
  • Then used Predator: .png?a=hhfc
  • And Luke: .png?a=hhhc
  • Defender rolled: .png?d=bbf
  • And I won!

~100 lines of PHP and some .htaccess magic...
Each result set is a single image, generated on the fly!
Should help avoid the limit of 10 (?) images per post!

Here's how:

Attack dice: [img=kbelisle.ca/XWDI/.png?a=chfb]
Defense dice: [img=kbelisle.ca/XWDI/.png?d=efb]

Attack dice: .png?a=chfb
Defense dice: .png?d=efb
