I went with the idea that this thread is about your favourite game, which might not necessarily be the best game.
It's a toss-up between X-Wing Alliance and Knights of the Old Republic for me.
XWA just feels like the Star Wars universe we know and love, the family on the outside of the galactic struggle, looking in. The best of the pure space combat games out there, with the best story.
Knights of the Old Republic was a different and unexplored era, but still felt true to Star Wars (moreso than the prequels, for me). And, being Bioware, it had an epic story with a twisting plot.

It was close but my overall favorite is Rebellion
Empire at War had a much better story mode but the lack of story campaigns for the Alliance and Empire in Forces of Corruption plus the removal of the neutral planets and side mission options in FOC's Galactic Conquest hurt it badly and the hyperspace system which only allows you to jump fleets to systems neighboring those you control rather then being able to jump anywhere in the galaxy like in Rebellion is too limiting
Knights of the Old Republic was fun but it suffered from the idea that the instant you fall to the dark side bloodshed becomes your first resort rather then an option.
X-Wing Alliance was great but with my reflex and fine motor issues due to medical conditions Flight Sims usually get frustrating quickly no matter how much I enjoy them..
Rebellion has a special place in my heart.
Me too. I would lose days to that game.
