many people think that JJ Abrams's Star Trek movies are good

Yep.

Of course, the counter point of, "you can't have a valid opinion unless you've watched the entirety of the original tv series, Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Star Trek with the Quantum Leap guy, read all the EU novels, written fan faction, attended a convention wearing Spock ears, and translated War and Peace in Klingon" is pretty darn compelling, I must admit.

You're fond of logical fallacies aren't you?

Point of order scott bakulas enterprise was awful there's a reason it got canned season 4, and plenty of people are not fans of voyager.

Just like with star wars not everything trek is good but it's wrong to judge the entire franchise based only on the movies because we all know the odd numbered ones always suck.

Seriously, Vigil? Here we are discussing something that is completely subjective, and you're going to break out the strawman?

nearly everything in this thread is a strawman, to whit:

"The majority of movie goers are idiots easily amused by shiny things pretty women and things that go boom the fact they liked the trek movies proves squat."

"Star trek is about exploration and diplomacy not mindless action scenes anyone that likes the two newest films clearly does not like star trek or understand its core message."

"Must be the only two Star Trek movies you've seen."

"Also your argument is, "You must be wrong because movie who probably weren't even born when original Trek was going on liked the movies""

Oh, your taking the high road now, I see. Whatever, dude.

Jesus, that actually got 4 seasons?!

I get your point that the reboots don't fit, I really do, and a lot of people feel the same way. As someone not invested in Star Trek, I watched those movies from outside the context of the entire series, and was entertained.

I watched the creator of Star Wars take the franchise out back, tie it to a tree, and bash it with a shovel. As a Star Wars fan, I dislike the prequels because it felt like the entire continuity of the series was broken and re-shifted to the point were I think they actually made me like the originals less (a little, but still).

As a movie fan I dislike the prequels because the dialog was abysmal, the chemistry between the actors was non-existent, and the hero of the movies was completely unlikeable in every way. Without the OT, if Lucas had submitted the prequels in their final state, there's no way those get greenlighted by any studio. I think the new Star Trek's would.

Nope. Not That Guy. Don't have the rocker. That Guy school wouldn't take me. So I just have the Regular Guy rocker.

It's JJ Abrams, I sure hope this won't turn out to be in an alteranate universe, like in his Trek movies...

It would be nice if it was so we could keep the old continuity.

We can agree to disagree.

But be honest, a lot of the actual ST fans (and even people who had never seen ST before) didn't like the Reboots. Certainly not a majority, but a very large number did.

I have yet to see a JJ film that was more than decent.

Had they been stand alone generic sci-fi movies they wouldn't be bad just forgettable like battleship was, but tying it to star trek means you inherit the history so you need to respect that jj didn't.

The prequels were shockingly bad because you were a fan already, in the same way I grew up with trek I was there every week as tng DS9 and voyage aired so jjtrek was as big a punch in the gut as the prequels.

We've had bad movies before but they were always trek despite the flawed story.

Literally nothing's right from ship design to having Orion women in Starfleet he just took iconic images put them in a blender and added lens flair.

And that's why I can't get enthused, I'm scared he`ll cannons continue to dismantle my childhood.

It won't be. The new movies will be a continuation of the main storyline.
