Requirement to have cards

By meldon, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hi all,

I am just starting to get into X Wing after a long time playing other games and I have a couple of quick questions about the cards and upgrades.

Is it necessary to have all the cards you are using as originals and do you have to have the right number of cards for your ships?

The reason I ask is simple, I drew out a list of what I thought was cool on the squad builder on line and then went and bought those ships, I didn't realise at the time that you can have upgrades from future waves as well as what comes with the ships.

So assuming you have to own the card, what is the general consensus on whether you have to own enough of them for the number of choices you have made? So if I choose 2 ships with a set of Proton Rockets each but only have 1 card, is this ok?

Finally do we know if there are any plans to release cards sets for waves? Meaning a set of cards for everything within a set wave.

I know I would pick these up just to see what I am likely to be facing if not to add upgrades to my existing ships, and I realise that card components to these kind of things are possibly the most expensive part but I still think it would be worth it.

Thanks and looking forward to bing part of what seems to be a thriving community :)

If you are looking to play competitively in a tournament, the rules are clear: You are required to have originals of the cards (no proxies) in the appropriate quantities (ie: 2 ships with Predator requires 2 Predator cards).

That being said, if you're new to the game and only playing casually I don't think anyone would mind if you just brought a printed out squad list from one of the popular squad builders!

Also, FFG has stated in the past that they do not intend to sell card-only expansions.

If you want to know what expansion packs certain cards come in, you can look up the cards on xwing-miniatures.wikia.com

If playing in official tournaments, you do need all the cards used in your list.

If playing casual with friends, what ever you agree upon is fair game :) Lot's of people proxy cards for casual play.

FFG has stated that cards only expantions are not in their interest, to put it short. How ever there third party retailers that sell individual cards.

Most casual players don't have a problem but You would need to talk to them.

Tournaments I have seen people loan cards to other player to get them "legal".

The Uber-competitive scene assumes that you can beg, borrow, steal, or buy all of the ships required to get you in.

The regular Tournament scene has a bit of a camaraderie, wherein folks are likelier to loan their opponents cards, dice, even damage decks occasionally.

Casual play doesn't care about proxyying, but even casual players are occasionally annoyed in having to remember that your X-Wing model is actually a Z-95.

Yeah, thats what I thought it might be, its a bit annoying but I understand most of it.

if you have one use items its handy to have the card so everyone remembers that you have used it already and discard it from your ship card, its a bit more frustrating for the items that stay especially if you have a printed sheet for your squadron.

I am making an assumption here since I haven't really looking into the competitive side of things yet but I assume its the usual you create a list and thats what you use for the entire event.

and I can completely understand that proxying ships can get annoying being a war gamer from other systems I think the worst statement I had thrown at me in anger at an event when I questioned an upgrade weapon being fired was "Well can't you just imagine its on there ..." when some tanks had the upgrade, others didn't but all looked identical on the table!

Thanks for the link, I had already found that one to discover the 2 items I had selected were from Imperial aces (proton rockets) and the accuracy corrector (Star Viper) and I suppose the root of my issue is I will probably pick up the imperial aces at some point but I don't really have any interest in the Scum and Villainy stuff so would begrudge getting it just for a card. Oh, and I see a lot of the more reasonable 3rd party sellers are US based and I am in the UK.

Even when you proxies in casual games it is often best that you have at least one actual copy of the card you are pretending to have. That way if any disputes come up you have the actual card there to reference. FFG does have things set up to basically require you purchase at least one of everything.

While they may not be willing to produce card packs FFG will reprint some upgrades in other products. It used to be that if you wanted a Stealth Device you had to have a Firespray but now the Scyk has one as well. PtL required the A-Wing but now Imperial Aces has two copies of that to go along with the ship that likes that upgrade the most. This may not help you today but it can help you tomorrow and can be beneficial to the player just getting into the game.
