How much of an impact has Armada had on your X-Wing playgroup?

By gundamv, in X-Wing

My group has started getting up earlier and turned 'X-wing Saturday' into 'Star Wars Saturday'. There's even a budding Age of Rebellion group forming and we go from 10 AM until usually around 6 PM or so

Your group must be really REALLY keen to be getting up that early on a Sunday morning...

The thing just with Sunday mornings is, well Saturday night was before...

Such a good show

It's not taken off here so far, me and my friends keep talking about IA and armada but none of us yet have been brave enough to take the financial plunge. I reckon I will get one of them or maybe both in the end. I get the feeling that I would need to collect both factions of armada to get my friends to play, which would be expensive!

None so far in my area. The two gaming stores that I usually play at do not have an Armada community just yet. I think most of the regulars simply invested too much time and money in X-Wing to buy another game. That and when competition time comes, we get really invested in fine tuning our lists, which is exciting. That is a thrill that would be problematic to reproduce for Armada in our area.

"NUNS!"

Very little in my LGS. The only impact is that there were two new guys who just got into X-wing. They also just got into Armada. I've seen them play both games in a night, but they are the only people in my LGS to play the game. Most people I know just can't afford the time or money to get into it. They are either older and have families, so they don't have the time. Or, they are younger and short on cash and don't have the money.

about half the group has invested in armada

about all the group is capable of playing more than one game :P

we'll get the rest of them playing it too, soon. It's really too beautiful a game to ignore, like X-wing perfected

And about all the group still plays xwing over armada. :) This may change after regionals next week though.

will change*

and then wave 7 will come out and we'll flow back to x-wing

and then wave 3 will come out and we'll swarm back to armada

and then nationals...

and then the first store championships...

We generally have a strong X-Wing group (up to 10 on Thursdays). A couple of those guys have Armada, and occasionally peel off to play. Generally not a problem, as they'll come back if someone needs an opponent or someone different to play against.

Personally I won't be getting into it. I've got X-Wing for my Star Wars/competitive fix. Then I've got King of Tokyo, Zombie Dice, Takenoko, Boss Monster etc for family and most of my other friends.

Next for me is the Batman Miniatures game. Going to get an intro before committing though.

What is this thing where people think you can only play one game? i play battletech both classic and alpha strike, x-wing, armada we are just getting into this new game based on batman and we are going to start age of rebelion RP soon.

It's not going to kill x-wing don't worry.

My group has put X-Wing on hold for the moment, and really taken up Armada. No doubt the Raider will bring X-Wing back to the fore, but Armada Wave 2 will be coming right on its heels. Variety is a good thing.

A few players (2-3) have bought into Armada. One of them in particular had bought for close to $1500 of x-wing ships, only to sell it all out at a huge discount (we estimated it was $500) to finance a total purchase of Armada, only to keep BBBBZ in x-wing for tournaments. So, he's stuck with that list - his choice, I'd never do anything close to that since I like the tinker aspect so much in X-Wing.

I've been meaning to try Armada, with no intention to buy it, but I haven't found the time. We have a deluge of local x-wing tournaments, a welcome change compared to early 2014.

It was tough getting games in leading up to regionals because everyone just wanted to play Armada. I feel like SW Sundays may be turning largely into Armada Sundays here and I may have to turn elsewhere to get regular X-wing in.

A lot of the star trek deserters who came to xwing seem really keen on armada near me. Also just people who like xwing, but the ex-trekkers seem more focused on it than xwing.

given how wizkid's idea of Star Trek capital ships engagements is just X-wing miniatures with the enterprise, I can say I understand :P

FFG game prices are getting ridiculous. Armada is $95.00 CAD, Imperial Assault the same, Forbidden stars the same. I can't justify picking any of those up at those prices -- but especially so Armada since it'll be another $150 to get a semi decent assortment of miniatures. I think I paid <$35 CAD for an X-wing core set, and $11 per mini.

Even their less "epic" games are too expensive now. Tigris and Euphrates for $55 CAD? No thanks. There's so many other good games out there that are cheaper. Lords of Waterdeep, Castles of Burgundy, Ticket to Ride, Bioshock Infiite -- the list is long, and all cost me <$40 CAD.

Other game companies are making very high quality games at much lower prices, why can't FFG?

Basically the price is what keeps me from getting into it. There is a couple of Armada players at league night but most people I know are already vested in X-wing and it is too expensive to jump in another collectible hobby. There are a couple of players who don't like Armada mechanics as well.

Armarda is already down to £59 imp assault £64 on Amazon and i could probably get it cheaper still elsewhere are you sure you can't find it cheaper in Canada?

No effect at all. I've never seen anyone play it, and I don't think I've seen anyone ever purchase it.

However, for a friend of mine (who its too late to get started into X-Wing), we're getting him Armada for a gift, so it's nice to get him started out with something that has only launched a single wave. That'll actually be my first exposure to the game. Can't wait to see how it's played.

X-wing is Super Star Destroyer expensive.

Armada is Death Star expensive.

Lord Gamer, we have detected a wallet on the 3rd shelf of the hobby game store. The customer there is stingy enough to resist all store discounts.

The ships was clumsily as it was slow! Prepare for a sales assault, store owner, and position the staff so that no customer escapes without an expansion pack!

I think for stores with competitive players and a larger group, X-Wing still rules the X-Wing nights. For others, it seems like more than half the people have been pulled off X-Wing and would rather play Armada or Imperial Assault these days. It's like pulling teeth to get people to play X-Wing sometimes. Heck, even I got drawn into playing a couple games of Armada (fun game, but X-Wing is still my main game).

To be fair the X-wing is the best priced miniatures game in the market (especially when you compare it to warmachines or warhammer). But yeah FFG is almost becoming the Activision-Blizzard of board game publishers.

No impact at all, none of the xwing players around here has armada as far as I know.

Armada is slowly picking up here. 3-4 of our X-Wing group has it, but we haven't really managed to put up games yet. Just one with 2 Cores and few games with 1 core, mainly for demoing the game and learning to play it.

People have been waiting for wave 1 and it sure is a different game when you get more ships to play with. But still X-Wing is the game we are mainly playing.

So I'd say Armada made slight impact in our Gaming group.

Fewer members of the X-Wing regulars joined me in also playing Armada than I expected would do so. There's a couple more doing Imperial Assault, but the X-Wing community is still quite intact.

I've met some good new people through Armada, and my ability to help shape that new community has made that more interesting for me. While I really like my X-Wing crew, the style of play is stuck in 100pnt6asteroidDeathMatch mode, which makes it less intriguing for me.

I've been a wargamer for like, 20 years. FFG games are cheap in comparison to many other wargames, in terms of both money and time. A new army for 40K might cost me $600 or more. And every time a new edition drops I'm up for $140 for a new rulebook and $80+ for a new codex for each army. And don't even think about how much it costs to build a large WHFB army. Historicals are nominally cheaper, but by the time you satisfy your OCD and build 1:10 scale Roman legions and attendant barbarian hordes it's not actually cheaper at all.

95$ CAD is worth around 76$ US, so that price is actually pretty fair.

As for Armada, I'll play my first real game this weekend since I just received my Wave 1 stuff. I only tried a short game using only the Core Set stuff and can already see the value of the game. But, I don't think it will have an impact on my X-Wing groups. My friends that already invested in X-Wing won't bother with a second miniature game, especially when the theme is the same, so I'll have to create a second group and try to convert those that didn't bother with X-Wing. Worst case scenario, Armada will be the occasional Event game.
