I have painted miniatures prior to this game, primarily "Flames of War", and I also painted a full set of the former Fantasy Flight game "Tide of Iron," but this was a new one for me. I have never painted anything like this, and the small size and my clumsy hands made this a challenge. I knew that I wouldnt be happy with this game unless all the ships were painted, and since I am a lifelong strategy game enthusiast, the course was set, as it were.
I put a base/primer coat on all of the fighters...darker grey for the Imperial fighters, and lighter grey for the Alliance fighters. I know that there should ideally be more differentiation, but with so many ships to do, I opted for a quicker route. I use acryllic paints, which is a lifesaver if you are mistake-prone like I am. For the Imperial ships, following the base coat I added the black sections, including cockpits, then went back to add engine details and all that. The Alliance fighters were more difficult, although they followed the same basic path, due to the amount of freehanding that went into their paint schemes. After completing all of the intitial paint schemes, everything was blackwashed at least once, and then coated with a sealer and hit with a dull coat spray. The capital ships got a wash and sealer, with the exception of the Alliance ships that got some touching up. I'm not as fancy or creative as some here are, and I like a plainer look, so I didn't do much on the bigger ships besides some recoloring and weathering. I'm pretty pleased with the overall result, and am looking forward to adding some of the ships from "Mel's" line shortly.
