Man...Talk about bad luck

By Gosric, in X-Wing Off-Topic

Playing the old WEG RPG.

My characters first appearance was popping out of hyperspace ship on fire and out of control. Managed to bring it into a landing right on the edge of the crashpad, half into the Jungle, Partially due to the help of my batshit insane droid who is a **** good mechanic but hates me The other characters appear and one promptly starts stealing parts from my ship which Pleases me not.

Then i am informed that the Empire in the form of the Dark Lord Cyrril Karsh has just annexed the system and pronounced on the holonet that the Corvan race is to be exterminated on sight (the reason my ship was on fire etc was due to my barely escaping the Imperial blockade of Corvus prime) and that The Corvan system has been 'sterilized'.

We have to hide out and the port authority which does not like the Imp annexation says that they will keep the Ravenheart safe as long as possible while i raise the money to get it repaired.

Wouldnt you know it the newly formed party has a pod racer so raising the money shouldnt be hard. What we dont know is that he is a decent racer but his pod is complete garbage. Turns out we only have about 12000 C between us so the Rodian in the group uses his contacts to arrange a meet with the Hutts. Well...After that mistake we will be rich if we win and owe the Hutts 270000C if we lose.

Amazingly due to the most carnage filled pod race ever our race wins. At the end there was an exploding pod which along with the engine attached by a cable goes flying into the stands. the newest party member makes an incredibly lucky shot and hits the cable changing the trajectory and saving a lot of people. This is witnessed by the innocent impressionable team member who i awed by the shot.

Its time to go collect our winnings. The Hutts using Huttese math have decided that the share owed to them is half again as high as it should be But our impoverished noble managed to use his cultural knowledge to cut the price down to some thing decent. About this time the impressionable youth in the group says Hey. Double or nothing our best shot against yours.pointing out the fellow who took out the flying pod not knowing that he is an engineer and that was just dumb luck.

Using a loophole i am allowed to shoot for him and having the right sort of skills take out their best man. Now the Hutts owe us 540000C and have decided that it would be easier to just turn us over to the Empire...

Some quick talking results in them agreeing to fix my ship and us working for them for a period of 2 years in exchange for the vast majority of the money so we are beginning to come out ahead again although with less cash.

About this time Dark Lord Karsh arives with his fleet and blockades the system, Remembering the recent events on Corvus the people panic and even the Hutts start having second thoughts. The only reason they dont just turn us over is due to the heavy handed treatment they receive from Karsh which displeases them.

We hide out in the jungle encountering some troops and an AT-ST during which we find out that the Empire are rebuilding the Ravenheart for reasons we do not understand but cannot be good. SO our plans go into overdrive and we storm the bay and steal the ship. we fight off some TIEs on the way out of the gravity well and then promptly turn back when faced with three ISDs and a SSD. There is a blazing dogfight in the atmos during which our gunner proves his worth and everybody works frantically to keep a barely rebuilt ship going. Then a bad hit causes a short that activates the hyperdrive in the atmosphere. We reappear somewhere a way away with a single planet in the distance that we know nothing about. and while it is quiet we sort out the obvious Imp bugs that are on the ship .

But then a planetary security ship appears and boards us and the first words from the head officer is "Aren't you Corvan?"
And dammit that is where the GM decided to stop for the night. I really hope these new people are sympathetic to the situation

Though on the bright side, since it is having to be rebuilt, i had an excuse to redesign the Ravenheart a bit.

I've played the WEG version a lot. I never like the DnD mechanics. We decided to go back to WEGs insteand of the newer FF one. But playing it again I really hate the mechanics for taking damage and healing. My players usually just want to fart around until they are healed. One player who was moderately wounded decided to stay in the ship and heal for most of the rest of the scenario. (I let them full heal between finished scenarios)

I want to get switched over to the FF version but I have to convert all the characters to the new system. Sadly, it's been over a year since we've played. I gotta find someone else to GM. I just don't have time to anymore.

I like your story though. Sounds like you had some fun. Love the ship. It looks like a blockade runner of some sort. The nose turret would be a blast to man.

I like the WEG sytem despite my dislike of some of the lazy design work in the game art. But still a quick and easy system. If characters have been around for a while it can become a bit of a dice rolling fest but since we are playing it via google chat and using the online dice rolling app that isnt an issue.

I an just hoping that after the hectic events of the last game involving the discovery of Imperial tracking sytems in one of our droids and the presence of a force amplifiation crystal planted on board the ship. Rolands attempted suicide by way of Karth's SSD .Only prevented at the last minute by the repair and activation of the navcomputer and the skill of our gunner. Going at high speed from the Corporate Sector to Tattooine (no real reaosn to go there but it is almost a requirement and we needed suppiles and an out of the way place to get them so we went to Toschi Station....And yes we got some power converters) Being pursued at every turn. And trying to use the crystal to get into contact with the Jedi, or at least the well known Slywalker, but failing and giving Karsh access to the mind of our force user...

Hopefully we can catch our breath now we are in the middle of Hutt space assuming they think we are worth more to them than the bounty.

I started RPing with the Star Wars D6 system and we still occasionally do campaigns with it but overall I prefer FFG. Space Combat has always been my favorite part of Star Wars, and capship combat even more. FFG has better capship combat rules then D6 IMO, though not quite as good as Saga's also IMO, plus it introduced several; of my top 10 new Star Wars capship designs of the 21st century.

Before the group split up we combined minitures and the roleplaying system and it worked nicely. Cant really do that effectively over the internet though. Which is a pity

Well. Perhaps the run of bad luck is over....Sadly theHutts tried to capture us for the bounty But in a blazing firefight we made it out losing one NPC companion but killiing Narvo the Hutt in the process, The hutt fighters were no match for us even though Roland spent the battle in his bunk havingbeen shot up rther badly. So we thought "Hey, Alderaan. There isnt likely to be anyone there and we have gotten rid of the crystal so are not being tracked.
Sure enough it was empty and we spent a bit of time recovering from wounds and fixing up the ship. Checking te Holonet we found a world that had only recently been fighting against the Empire and decided if we were going to contact the rebels it would be there. So into hyperspace and out at the planet Togoria. Where hoping for quiet we ran into a battle A damaged ISD vs the remains of the Rebellion blockde Namely 2 Nebulon Bs and a Corvette. Figuring that we needed to contact the rebels anyway we joined in helping the X Wings to take out TIES. It wasnt going well as even a damaged ISD is easily a match for what was in the system.
But then a group of X Wings decided to attack the main guns on the ISD to give the most badly damaged frigate a breather. Seeing our moment we leapt into the fray and giving my ships code rank etc i somehow persuaded the X Wings to follow my lead (they were desperate). clearing the way for a close in run along thr ISDs hull to take out the shield generators. Somehow we made it and with a couple of strafing attacks took the generators out allowing the remainig frigate and corvtte to pound the ISD until it withdrew explosions popping out all over. Whch with the forepower we had on hand was the best we could exoect.
Then, while being hailed as the heroes of the hour, we discovered why the rbels were here. They wanted to make a treaty with the Togarians for minerals etc but the Togarian didnt trust humans so they were in a pickle until they realized one of my crew was, like the Togarians, a felinoid race. After a bt of this and that the negotiations began and we successfully added Togaria back into the rebellion but only becaue they could talk to a fellow cat.
Ths impressed the Rebel commanders and after a couple of days a reinforcement fleet arrived led by none other than Luke Skywalker who ha actually picked up the message we were trying to send him via the crystal. Hegave us the bad news that some of us who had handled the crystal (since it was actually one of the Kaiburr crystals) had gained strength in the force and that we would need training inorder to prevent ouselves being used as toold by Karsh.

SO now we in the heartof the fleet being trained to use the force by the man himself and my ship has finally been raised to full functionality. Only two of us seem to have the power to become actual Jedi but training is needed to control the limited abilites we have gained. Skywalker is concerned about Rolands rage at Karsh (having someone destroy your homeworld will do that) so is taking a bit of extra time to teach him control.

So yes. It seems the run of constant bad luck might be over we went from being hunted and betrayed by everyone from Sith to Imperial troops to Hutts and Bounty hunters. To being heroes of the rebellion and being trained to use the force by Luke himself

Hmmm. I dont know why i keep recounting these adventures but oh well. It is Star Wars but it is fof topic since it isnt X-Wing related. Though some of the battles like the damaged ISD vs 2 Nebilon Bs and a Corvette who were trying desperately to survive until reinforcements arrinve while the 12 x wings and a smuggler craft made a run on the iSD to try to take out the shield generators and give the other ships a fighting chance could be a good scenarion of X Wing or Armada.

Last game things got epic. Word reached the fleet of a group of Corvan survivors who had been capturd and were being held in the Imp garrison base on Fondor to await the arrival of Karsh. So a decent chunk of the rebel fleet cruised in as a diversion while our heroes tried to mount a rescue mssion. (Not just out of the kindness. We took along a couple of specialists and were planning on turning the planetary defences against the Imperial fleet allowing the Rebels to take the shipyards while we were there) So we popped out of hyper in the Ravenheart a minute after the rebels had engaged the 15 ISDsand stormed down to the planet.

Sadly we attracted a group of 20 TIES on the way and they were not an escort. It turned into a furball with the almost fully upgraded Ravenheart able to hold its own for a minute in space. But we decided heading into the gravity well would be a better idea so we took them on a long chase through the strip mined surface of Fondor using the turrets and the environment to take them out a couple at a time (kicking in the thrusters and slamming a TIE with a fantail of superheated run off water does the trick if anyone ever wnats to try it, as does flying between pipes that barely had clearance for the Ravenheart and definitely didnt have room for a fighter as tall as a TIE ) Once we had thinned the numbers a bit we used the fact that we had all the turrets in action and mixed it up with them until we were victorious thanks to skilled piloting and good use of shield angles and gunnery. We landed in a mine entrance not too far from the garrison and headed in. Our engineer staying on the ship to fix the shields and lateral thrusters.
Things turned into a bit of CF and we had to deal with sentry towers manned with repeating blasters and a charged fence. Our agile cat managed to climb the tower after we had shot it up to give him handholds and with our covering fire as a ditraction took out the gun crew. Hooray we thought until the three airspeeders flew in and started strafing us. This was bad and we lost a couple of the Rebel troops who were with us until the Ravenheart came out of the tunnel and took the airspeeders down.

About this time our jedi in trainig got a message on the ship comm that the rebels were going to have to pull out very soon. Folllowed soon after with another message from luke that somehting bad was coming.
And yes. Our old buddy Karsh with the SSD popped out and started searching for us. It was decision time on that hellblasted landscape and i told our would be Jedi that he had to take the Ravenheart and get the hell out of the system because he couldnt be captured by Karsh. With our verly limited abilities If we were captured it was torture and death. if he was captured having had training by Luke and with the force strong in him it was darkside time.

There wasnt time for him to land and us to get on board and even if we had tried the garrison anti ship turrets which were having issues targeting the Ravenheart would have had no prblem taking the ship out while it was on the ground
He was not happy about this (neither were we but t was my mission *L*) but saw the logic in it and left as did the fleet. leaving us haivng just gotten into the garrison,. Alone on the planet surrounded by Imps realizing that there might not even be any prisoners and it might have been a trap all along (**** you Ackbar. You could have warned us)
It is hard to wait until next friday to see what is in store for us

:D This could make an awesome cartoon series :D

Id love ti see it done by he guy who did he anime style TIE fighter battle. Saldy no game tonight so we are still stuck inthe garrisn with no idea what is going on

Post some more :D i reallly like it. It would be perfect if u remade it into a real Story :3

I dont have the writing talent to put it into actual narrative form. But would love to see it done. Hopefully we will have an earlier scheduled game to make up for missing friday so the cliffhanger will not drive me up the wall

:D Cant wait, tho i suppose u all shall DIE horribly coz the Dark side is stronk :P

It wouldnt surprise me. the longest SW campaign we ran some time ago ended with a Jedi, his apprentice My character and his wife and our engineer stuck on a star destroyer . Versus a character who had turned to the drk side in a former campaign and returned as a Sith lord and basically kicked our arses.

My wife tried to shoot him and was force choked to death, i immediately lost it and tried to engage him with a thermal detonator in each hand and was killed. The jedi died protecting his apprentice who lost his legs but was taken aboard the Lydis Flower, (our ship at the time. Long enough ago that wings3d didnt exist so it ws designed...oh wow, with a pen on paper *L*) while the Jedi and the thermal detonator blasts ditsracted our enemies. . Those two were the only survivors of a years long campaign that was mostly epic but featured such lovely events as slamming a Y Wing into a Hutt Palace (waste of a lovely ship but it had to be done) and a panicked character screaming into the comm while being chased by Imp ships "Rebel base on Teirfon, Rebel base on Teirfon. We need help", Which wasnt appreciated by the (formerly) secret rebel base on Teirfon.

So survival is not a guarantee.

Come to think about it. I liked what i did for the Lydis Flower. I might have to remake it in 3d

To kill a Sith lure him into a large tall building :D then like a Megatower on Courscant.... then blow it up WANTON SLAUGHTER ALL MEATBAGS DIIIIIEEEEE...

Uhm.. sorry Hk-47 mode :P Anyway i await eagerly to read about your exploits :)

Hmmm. If it works for Posleen it could work for a Sith. Might give it a try

U know... simple solutions are the Best :P

Well....That was short but action packed *L*

We picked up where we left off with our Jedi in training escaping in the Ravenheart and the rest of us in the garrison. The rebel security tech who was with us gave us the location of the prison block and also let us know thta the rebels would be seriously grateful if we could take the time, once we reached a suitble terminal, to download full schematics of the garrison.SInce they are mass produced it would be an invaluable resource.

About this time he picked up stormtroopers heading to our location. After a brief bit of hijinx involving doors opening suddenly and concussion grenades being rolled through as the door shut again we were free to make our way through the blasted corridor past the squad of troopers who had been the recipient of said grenades. And found ourselves in the main vehicle bay. We split up with my team (the rebel sec tech, Khzyrion the cat like alien and Roland) making our way to the other side while Sebastian the noble, Gleebo the Rodian and the Rebel medic mde their way to an AT-ST to give us cover. As was to be expected we were sadly not alone in the bay and the ready crews of an AT-St (and unbeknownst to us an AT-AT) were already there and ready to go. Team 1 (my group) beat feet to the underside of an ATAT for cover while team 2 climbed into the AT-ST to fight back.

It was chaos i tell you as Sebastian's team tried to figure out how to operate a Scout Walker while the Imperial crewed one headed towards my team, guns blazing. Luckily they got too close and using a bit of my very minor force power i managed to get a grenade through an open port. the end result was predictable and the walker collapsed.. Meanwhile the door at the far side had opened and Stormtroopers were flooding in only to be met by the withering fire from the, still wobbly but getting better, team 2 crewed ATST. the way was clear so we hopped over the small gap from Hatch to blasted hole and made our way into the cell block itself. there were only a couple of officers remaining and they didnt last.

That drove the ground troops back and Gleebo blasted the entrance way. This was when the At-At crew that we hadnt seen started trying to pound the ATST with chin guns. My team immeditely started racing up the gantry to the ATAT while the ATST tried to avoid destruction. Gleebo was a good gunner, got a lucky hit in and disabled the power conduits to the AT-AT guns giving us the time to get to the side hatch and break the security code.

Once inside the cat went for the gunner while i took out the pilot. With the doors to the hangar blasted we had a bit of breathing room. We decided to rendesvous in one of the 2 remaining AT-ATs because with the detention block being on the second level we could access it from the ATAT hatch without fighting our way to the turbolifts. Team Sebastian baled out of the ATST and stared running to the AT-At only to be hit by withering fire from reinforcements. The medic was taken out but Sebastian and Gleebo made it.The reinforcements of course stood no chance against the Walkers guns and once they were cleared out we blew a hole in the wall on the second level, being careful to avoid the main cell area. with a bit of trial and error we took the walker over to the wall and laid it alongside. Setting up one of the tripod repeating blasters from the Walkers armoury for cover. the Stormtroopers attacked but Imperial security worked in our favour since there was only one way they could approach from the cell block. After a bit of a one sided massacre we made our way to the cell block itself where the couple of officers who remained didnt last long. Unfortunately we lost the Rebel Security manto one of them.

Now the only way in was through the turbolift or through the Walker. We set up the tripod gun at the turbolift and started to break the cell security. it took a little while during which the turbolift was a scene of carnage but any guilt we might have felt at such a slaughter was assuaged when we opened the cells.

Once the attack began the Imperial officers had gone through the cells killing all the prisoners. Out of 109 detainees only 4 remained. Only one of which was a Corvan (the main reason for being here)

We made our way back to the Walker and started t leave the garrison building with no real plan atthis point other than to get out of the building and possibly find a shuttle to escape in, or hole up in one of the mine tunnels until the rescue team arrived for us. This didnt go too smoothly as the bay held capacity for 6 AT-Ats and we had only seen three. First thing we knew we started taking fire but luck was on our side as we had the building for cover and they were in a large open area. Walkers fighting Walkers is a lot like WW2 Battleships duking it out. tons of armour and heavy weapons. Slogging it out until one gets a lucky hit. luck was mostly on out side and we took out two but the third took out our drive train rendering us immobile. We could still aim and managed to take out the last but had to bail out of the Walker.

Once more we had to get across the bay underfire to get to one of the troop carriers and escape but this time Khzyrion the most force sensitive of the remaining characters had a terrible feeling. And then the troops fire slacked off as the man in charge strode in, his red lightsabre glowing.

Roland immediately lost his ****, this being (so he thought) the man responsible for the destruction of his world and made his way towards the SIth unloading with his light repeating blaster. the bolts of course did nothing and were reflected back striking Roland and almost killing him.

I used a force point to keep going, despite being grievously wounded, calling on my wrath, resulting in a dark side point (but one has to play in character, and that is what Roland would have done)

Meanwhile the rest of the team being calmer in nature and having responded better to Skywalkers teaching combined their efforts and managed to send a powerful force blast against the Sith. stunning him and giving him pause. He retreated back into a turbolift and the firefight began again, Under cover fire Roland managed to get to the vehicle that the rest of the team were in and we retreated under heavy fire through the ruined wall and out into the open.

And that is where we stopped....Short but action packed

I dont have the writing talent to put it into actual narrative form. But would love to see it done. Hopefully we will have an earlier scheduled game to make up for missing friday so the cliffhanger will not drive me up the wall

I'll take a crack at it if you want. If you want to send me a write up of all the characters so I know who is who. You know, their classes / professions, any special skills, equipment, etc. Also, if you could tell me who PC's and NPC's are, that would help out.

I could link you to some of my work, so you have an idea what to expect, if you want.

:D buy portable Blaster canons, they explode on hit so one cannot deflect :D or even better make an Exosuit, with dual cannons and Forcefields :3

All in all pretty cool, grats on surviving :P

If we make it out of this situation we we will be revising our loadouts for serious assaults. And with the amount of pent up wrath Roland has it is doubtful Luke is going to teach him much more than how ti defend against the force,,,As for having it written down by a third party ill hav to check with the other players

I can tell You a secret... its passed from a generation to generation of Pearless Warriors without any Flaw !! Its a solution to Every situation one might encounter.

When in Mortal Danger...

When Beset by Doubt...

Run in Little Circles...

Wave your Arms and shout !!

If we cannot find a ship then that will likely be our next plan

I cannot wait :D

Ok. So the game has been on and off for reasons mentioned elsewhere in the off topic section.

The escape turned out to be hectic but easier than we thought it would be. A hard chase through the gullies and mined out trenches that probably bore more resemblance to Fury road than Star Wars. Culminating in a desparate vehicular battle through the streets, during which due to a couple of seriously crap rolls the last Covan prisoner was killed, and ramming through the gates of the Starport. It all happened so quickly that the docking bays had not been locked down (Civilian controlled port where the controllers resented Imp high handedness)

We discovered a Corellian Corvette with a skeleton crew and with some amazing fast talking by our Sebastian who used his skills at diplomacy and command to great effect we managed to peacefully take it over (i think our GM was feeling sorry for us by this time *L*) and went screaming out of the atmosphere. On the way back to the fleet we went through the systems to check for trackers and shut down comms so any Imp-symps couldn't report our location and gave the crew the choice to join or be locked in the brig. All but two happily joined and when we finally got back Luke scanned them and concluded that they were sincere. I am 'assuming' that the others were kept prisoner and eventually released on some neutral world. But i didnt ask.

The confrontation with the Sith and the fact that the whole affair was a trap caused Luke to 'strongly suggest' that we accelerate our training. So much of the next couple of games involved our doing just that. With only a quick and remarkably uneventful, fancy that, trip to the Circarpous system to try and obtain Kaiburr (Kiber if you want to be picky and use the original script) crystals to amplify our abilities and construct our lightsabres with.

This was a challenge for the entire team but using the amplification of the Kaiburr crystals and with Lukes guidance we all succeeded in creating our Lightsabres. Roland however almost died during the construction of his due to his inability to let go of his anger, and also gained a darkside point which pleased Luke not at all and didnt exactly thrill Roland.

Sebastian during this time petitioned for the command of the new Corellian Corvette and was granted it. Renaming it the Sunchaser and equipping it with a potent mix of anti fighter and anti ship weapons with a small bay in the lower section just large enough for 2 A-wings. As well as a docking port which could mate with the Ravenhearts upper hatch. Linking the two ships together to allow easier communication and such during hyper and also to allow the Ravenheart to be detached at a systems edge with no power emmisions to do the scouting job it was designed for. while the Sunchaser continued in system on whatever mission it was performing.

The Ravenheart by this time had also been rebuit with an enhanced sensor and stealth package and to our joy both ships were equipped with an afterburner system llowing short bursts of speed which would enable the Ravenheart to out run TIE Interceptore briefly and the Sunchaser to outrun TIEs.

We shoukd have known that this largesse came with a price and as (when i report them) the next two missions showed things were suddenly to become much deadlier.
