Point limit going forward

By PewPewPew, in X-Wing

So over in armada they raised the point limit to 300, after wave one was released. And they're going to up it to 400 after huge ships arrive.

So X wing. We're getting more and more ships, getting all sorts of price tags including a decimater's 40 for the base model. Does this mean we should change the 100 point limit? Even ten points allows many more options, including quad auto-ceptors and tripple iggys.

I'm pretty sure the armada point limit thing is because of the price and available options, that 400 was always intended to be the standard, but they couldn't set it there to begin with because nobody would have enough stuff at first. It's akin to them saying to play 40 point games of x-wing before wave 1 was released. 40 points isn't the standard, but they had to tell people who only had a core set something.

News update, you already can field a quad autoceptor. 3x rgp w/auto thrusters + Turr phennir w/vi and AT's.

As tournaments seem to be getting shorter on time limits, I cannot really see the point limits going up to any appreciable degree.

Not likely. X-wing is still a much shorter game than Armada, anyway.

Not necessarily. Armada has set turn limit so you play out the game pretty much in set timeframes. People are adjusting to playtimes now but once experienced they can play through 6 turns in 30-40 minutes.

X-Wing can go on and on for hours.

Comparing Points in a Fleet game to points in a Fighter game is kinda of like making the statement that since tomatoes and apples are red we can make a supreme pizza with Apple Sauce.

They are 2 different games don't read to much in to one based on the other.

Hopefully they will raise it high enough to have two fully fat turrets because FUN.

I really hope they don't 'cause a lot of the faith I have in the designers of this game is that they recognize the inherent silliness of games over the 100 point "balance" threshhold. When they get 100 to be actually balanced, they can figure out the over 100 games next.

Me and my group play 150s...I don't think we will be going back.

In defense of both arguments, I would give Apple sauce supreme pizza a fair taste. Could go either way from there.

X-Wing got a points bump after Wave I came out just like Armada. X-Wing and Armada are very different games at very different stages in their lives, I wouldn't look at what one is doing for signs of what the other will do.

The game was developed and balanced for 100 points, I don't think they would throw away the balance that they've spent years trying to create.

Pork based toppings (sausage, bacon, etc.) would possibly do very well in that situation.

How much better (worse?) is it?

Or better yet:

Soontir: Royal TIE, PtL, AT

Phennir: Royal TIE, VI, AT

Alpha Squadron Pilot w/ AT x 2

How much better (worse?) is it?

Waaayyyy better!!!! It eliminates the dominance of any one ship as well as as the weakness of any one ship! Its kind of like large numbers of dice averaging out, more ships average out as well! We've been playing 150 here for over a year as well!

It all started for me playing an escalation tournament and having to get use to 120 and 150 point builds for that! Play with thse builds for a while and see what you think!

My experience of 150 points is you both get to pick one of your opponents ships and destroy it with little they can do about it due to the volume of firepower on the table for either side. After that, it's basically a 100 point game. You could probably save yourself time by both writing 150 points lists, showing it to your opponent, then you both get to veto one ship out of the opponents list before you start playing. Basically the same result

I wonder if running a bunch of assault missiles would work out in 150 points as well.

It's not that simple and you know it. Maneuvering still plays a massive role and keeping your opponent from focusing all core on a ship isn't that hard. This has never been am issue for us.

To answer pews question...we like it alot more and have had similar results as plainsman. No one ship dominates, fatties are more easily taken down and can't win the game based solely on their durability. It has also allowed us to really go off and utilize ships that are unpopular and try outlandish things...if they go down you usually aren't at a massive deficit. We see defenders, xwings, and a wings all the time. About the only ship not run is the adv...but that will be changing soon. You don't feel as constrained when you are building and it allows you so much more in the way of options...

It allows us to squeeze more game into our time...and we enjoy that.

Can you fit all 7 of those within range 1 of howl? :P

I've played a few 150 point games and I too love them. 150 gives you so many more options. If you place the same restrictions on a 150 point list that you do when you create an Epic list (only so many of a certain ship), it really forces you to branch out, using ships and combos you wouldn't normally use.

And 5 Autoceptor Royal Guards are soooo much fun.

Canceling 1 ship off each other's list would be funny until 1 person brings 12 TIEs and the guy brings Fat Han and some other stuff.

Guy 1 "I'll cross off Han"

Guy 2 "Hmm, guess I'll 86 that...TIE Fighter!"

You've already seen the point increase for X-wing, it's called epic play.

150 does have an interesting effect on the game, but I'm not sure it's good for the competitive scene. 2 Fat turrets +3 Tala Squadron Pilots fits rather nicely, as does 12 Obsidion Squadron Tie Fighters (with 20 points left over to upgrade to a few named pilots). Triple Agressors would be rather silly (Although IG-88A might finally see the light of day).

Also, we're looking at 80-90 minute rounds, which would extend the length of tournaments excessively, especially given setup would also be longer (more ships to place, obviously).

I dont like 150 point default because it eliminates the concept of arc dodgers, once everywhere in the field is covered by an arc there is no such thing as getting away.
