Palpatine Theory Builds!

By nigeltastic, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Rather than pollute the front page, gather here to discuss those juicy builds you're dreaming up for the freshly spoiled Emperor.

Mine is:

Darth Vader (36)

-Engine Upgrade

-Lone Wolf

-Tie/x1

-Advanced Targeting Computer

Soontir Fel (35)

-Push the Limit

-Stealth Device

-Autothrusters

Omnicron Group Pilot (29)

-Emperor Palpatine

100/100 points

Fly the command shuttle way in the back and ensure the two action economy kings never die as they chew through the enemy.

Kenkirk 44

Palpatine 8

Ysanne Isard 4

Determination 1

Shield upgrade 4

61

Maarek Stele 27

TIE/x1 0

Advanced targeting computer 1 (-4)

Ruthlessness 3

Homing missiles/assault missiles 5

Stealth Device 3

39

I got a bit of flak for including the stealth device on Stele, and the shield on the decimator instead of the engine upgrade. However, inamaintain that the decimator will be the big focus of attacks and no amount of "arc dodging" will stop that. The shield is just there to absorb another point of damage and delay the inevitable.. Maarek on the other hand will be flying head long into the fray, so the extra green combined with the threat of Palpatine giving a 4 evade result will possibly prevent people from targeting the Stele.

The homing missiles will be a great one shot with Maarek's and Palpatine's abilities combined. 4 [kaboom] results with Maarek? Yes please. In the right situation, that will doom any ship. The assault missiles, while spending a target lock is poor, four crits and 1 damage to everything at range 1 (another to the target of ruthlessness) is nothing to sneeze at either.

Two points of order: 1) ATC only works on primary weapon attacks 2) how do you expect 5 crits from homing missile or 4 crits from assault missile with any consistency?

I think that with Palpatine in the mix, Stealth Device might be a slightly stronger choice than it has been previously.

Second, and again may be my folly, but the article has a couple of instances where it could be interpreted that Palpatine can affect more than a single die. There is a thread devoted to that. Considering what can be done for 6 points and two crews lots devoted to Lando and C-3PO, resulting in 3 evade tokens before an actual defense roll is made, it doesn't seem too far fetched, though unlikely.

The wording of the card suggests it's only one die per round, though that's still powerful, just not quite as much as you were hoping I think.

I think that I prefer the alternate art version:

I'm going to run this:

Kenkirk + PTL + EU + Isard + Palpy

Leaves you 37 points for: Whisper + VI + ACD, Echo + VI + ACD + FCS, Soontir + PTL + ATs + SD (2 point imitative bid), Vader + EU + ATC + Predator, etc.

Heck, I'd even be tempted to run Soontir with TC & ATs. The heat will be off him so might as well. Basically you'll run Kenkirk around the battle and try to run with him as much as possible. Basic idea is to try and keep him alive so you get as much as you can out of the Emperor. With Push, your offense won't be horrible either. With the Emperor being able to make a hard to hit ship even harder to hit, you almost force them to go after the Deci first. With 2 unblockable evades a round when the shields go down, Kenkirk will laugh at other two ship builds.

My list is very similar to yours;

Kenkirk + PtL+ Isard + Palpatine + EU = 63 points

Vader + Lone Wolf + ATC + EU = 36 points.

I like Vader over Soontir for his durability and crew Vader doesn't impact him as much. With his built in PtL he can also take Lone Wolf for added Defense/Offense.

RAIDING PARTY (cuz it uses a bunch of stuff from the Raider)

Omicron Group Pilot (21)
+ Emperor Palpatine (8)
+ Sensor Jammer (4)
Omicron Group Pilot (21)
+ Darth Vader (3)
+ Tactical Jammer (1)
2x Tempest Squadron Pilot (21)
+ TIE/x1 (0)
+ Accuracy Corrector (0*)

and now young Skywalker.........................you will die. ;)

Maybe:

Darth Vader (35)

-Engine Upgrade

-Calculation

-Tie/x1

-Advanced Targeting Computer

Omnicron Group Pilot (29)

-Emperor Palpatine

... plus seasoning to taste.

Provides an excellent chance of three crits per attack from Vader.

my idea of a Palpatine's usage:

Oicunn 42

Predator 3

Palpatine 8

Gunner 5

Dauntless 2

EU 4

Soontir 35 with complete pack (ptl, thrusters, royal, stealh)

With the uncle Palpi, Soontir has 3 evades every turn...

Its a good thing they made him two crew, I could imagine a deci with Palps, RC, and Issard,

Yeah... Lone Wolf might be better on him actually.

I don't know what the list will look like but I have the name figgered. Get ready for the "Sheev Miller Band"!

This is one I want to try.

I think kirk will be hard to kill.

Kirk

Lone wolf

Emperor

Ysanne

Engine upgrade

Seismic Charge

Fel

Ptl

Autothrusters

Title

Stealth

Once Ysanne activates you can potentially stop 3 dmg a round. Min two. Not bad on a ship with 0 defense and a lot of hull.

Lone wolf works well from what I've seen on kirk paired with fel.

Engine upgrade will help boost against smaller ps ships and hopefully get behind a rock or boost to range 3 for an extra dice for D against the higher ps ships

If your opponent decides to go for fel, I say good luck.

If he's chasing fel, then all the better. You won

Omicron Shuttle (21)

Palp (8) and FCS (2)

Yorr (24)
HLC (7) or Mangler (4)

Vader (3)

Title (3)

Turr Phennir (25)

Title (0)

Sealth Device (4)

Auto Thrusters (3)

Vet Instincts (1) or PTL (3)

99 points or alternate 100

after playing around with a Xwing team builder I came up with this other alternative also using the mangler

With the Emperor, I think Kenkirk is going to replace Chirpy. He just becomes silly tanky, probably more than C3PO Han without R2-D2.

And in a pinch Palpatine can still turn that eyeball to a crit, even at range 3.

I wonder what else, we're supposed to put on a Palpy Shuttle, besides the dark lord himself. A single OGP dies pretty fast.

Option A: Engine Upgrade (+ Adv. Sensors)

This makes the shuttle very fast and might enable you to stay out of range of slower opponents.

Option B: Sensor Jammer

On a ship with only 1 agility, one less hit usually equals 1 less damage. However, because the defender modifies first, a single Focus token ruins all your efforts.

Option C: Countermeasures

When paired with two arc dodgers like Vader and Fel, it's likely that the opponent will find himself in situations where the shuttle is the only suitable target.

In this case, 1 additional agility might be the difference between life and death.

Option D: nothing

The cheapest out of the three options and probably the most efficient. If the opponent wants to destroy the shuttle, you can only delay it, nothing will save it.

That said, the longer you can delay it, the longer your escort can wreak havoc.

I'm torn apart between A and D and definitely will try out C some time.

D is my personal favorite, just keep the shuttle on the back line and let your escorts either a) fight with his support all game or b) pick the enemy apart as they charge him.
