Defending the Defender! - Tie Defender list help!

By JamieSpace, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hello all.

I really want to use the defender, its a great looking ship with some pretty nice abilities, but as everyone knows it costs an arm and a leg and its dial isn't the best (except the K turn everyone is expecting!)

I have thrown some lists together to see if I can get something that will at least compete.

Colonel Vessery (35)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Heavy Laser Cannon (7)
Stealth Device (3)

Omicron Group Pilot (21)
Advanced Sensors (3)
ST-321 (3)

Academy Pilot (12)

Academy Pilot (12)
Targeting Computer (2)

Total: 99

View in Yet Another Squad Builder

I like this one as its chucking around some target locks for Vessery allowing him to really hit home, but I have a feeling he will get targeted pretty early

Rexler Brath (37)
Marksmanship (3)
Heavy Laser Cannon (7)
Stealth Device (3)

Boba Fett (39)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Heavy Laser Cannon (7)
Fleet Officer (3)
Slave I (0)

This list seems pretty solid. Both have HLCs and a PS10 Boba handing out focus for Rexler. I put Marksmanship on Rexler so he doesn't need to ever focus in attack to make it devastating but this can easily be changed to Predator.

kinda bland but i have a buddy who has consistently done well with this list

Patrol leader

2X delta

comes in at an even 100points. in every tournament his opponents' first reaction is ...meh, i got this. thing is the list takes a beating, doesnt really care about stress or crits, and can deliver its own fair share of damage...and oh ya it has 28 health. he hasnt won any tourneys but hasnt finished worse than third

Onyx (Ion Cannon)

Onyx (Flechette Cannon)

Sigma (Enhanced Scopes, Recon Specialist, Stygium Particle Accelerator)

100 points

Delta (Heavy Laser Cannon)

Onyx (Heavy Laser Cannon)

Jonus (Determination)

99 points

Rexler (Predator, Heavy Laser Cannon, Shield Upgrade)

Vessery (Veteran Instincts, Heavy Laser Cannon, Shield Upgrade)

98 points

Rexler (Lone Wolf, Heavy Laser Cannon, Shield Upgrade)

Vessery (Outmaneuver, Heavy Laser Cannon, Shield Upgrade)

99 points

Those last two may require some practice, but have serious potential. The dial is the Defender's toughest nut to crack, but it is an excellent ship overall in my experience.

Delta (Flechette)

Delta (Flechette)

Soontir (ptl, royal guard tie, stealth device/shield, autothrusters)

[total: 99/100]

I really like the Defender. It's an Amazing ship and the dial is not that bad. It just takes a different mentality. It's unique. The hard part is supporting it, in my opinion.

Oh ok, some love for the generics. Keff, if I had that many bombers I may consider it!

Krysto I have to agree, it's a great ship but I'm having trouble of coming up with good support and not have it focused down too much.

I thought about Rex with two Royal guard (PTL & Autos) which could be nice as well

After playing soontir with auto thrusters and stealth device I am having hard time not using both on an intercepter!

It's so darn good with PTL on our shield less pilots.

But back to the post. With the amount of points on the defender adding anything else that is a legitimate threat usually ends up being a 2 ship list. I think the best for me so far has been with a mini swarm. I will have to try my 4 bombers with it instead of Howlie and bunch.

The second list is close to one I played for a while, just predator on both and no stealth device. The list munched on two ship lists no problem, but lists with bundles of b wings just trashed me, which felt real bad. It's a meta dependant crusher I think.

I think the Tie Defender is a little bit underrated. I think his biggest issue is, that his maneuver set works completely different than any other Imperial ship. Rexler Brath is kind of overpriced, imho, because it's usually superior to use a focus token to increase your hit chance, instead of saving it for a crit. But Colonol Vessery has great action economy, with a little bit of support and he receives an indirect buff with the upcoming Tie Advanced buffs. Strip a Heavy Laser Cannon onto him and you can do hit and run tactics over and over again. Equip him with an Engine Upgrade and you'll have a close combat Brawler that can chose between K-Turn + Boost or 3-Turn + Boost to stick to his targets over and over again.

My prefered framework to support Vessery is: Colonol Vessery, Tie Advanced + Adv. Targeting Computer and either a Shuttle or another Tie Advanced. This leaves you with 20 to 22 squad points left for upgrades or even another ship.

Sample lists:

Brawler Vessery + Doom Shuttle + Tie Adv + Tie Fighter

Hit'n'Run Vessery + Juno + Colzet (variant 2)

Lists with bundels of Bs tends to wreck most peoples day.

Well I will give a few a test but I'm determined to make at least a one Tie/D list viable.

I fly Defenders fairly often and they are fast, but not nimble in a conventional sense. I find that I use the white 4-K turn in place of the short hard-turns and banks a lot. It lets you keep ships in arc without losing actions, which is the kiss of death in this game.

Also, I tend to fly them naked and at PS1 so they can't be blocked. They have enough Agility and HP to take some hits and return fire. I have used the following list with good success:

Jendon in the ST-321 Shuttle with Rebel Captive and Anti-Pursuit Lasers (34 total)

2 x Delta Squad Defenders with Stealth Devices (33 each)

You slow roll in formation the first couple of turns while Jendon passes out Target Locks (works really well against 2-ship builds) then the Defenders split off to engage and joust while the Cow hits the parking brake and dishes out a surprising amount of damage.

I've been doing pretty well with this lately...

Colonel Vessery (35)
Outmaneuver (3)
Flechette Cannon (2)

Omicron Group Pilot (21)
Advanced Sensors (3)
Mara Jade (3)
Engine Upgrade (4)

Royal Guard Pilot (22)
Push the Limit (3)
Autothrusters (2)
Targeting Computer (2)
Royal Guard TIE (0)

Usually, I end up placing the shuttle before the other player due to PS in my meta. I slap that thing down in the middle of the table, with Vessery & the RGP off to the side. I have the shuttle do a zero and slowly move in the other two. Once I see where the other player is going to go, I beeline the shuttle towards them, forcing them to deal with the shuttle. The shuttle tries its best to block and stress while Vessery and the RGP pick at the sides.

Hmm after looking at all these I'm wondering about something like this:

Vessery

Royal Guard Interceptor

2x Bombers

What do you guys think? I can figure out the usual upgrades for the Royal Guard but what for the other 3?

I was wondering if this might be a fun 99 pt build.

Park the Shuttle in a corner with the Tie behind it to remove stress.

Advanced Sensors and 0 maneuver for the shuttle every turn.

Tie Fighter bumps with a hard one every turn.

Let Brath fly free, try to flank or get opponents to chase him and retreat back to the shuttle corner if needed.

Worst case, if the shuttle moves, I can run 2 turns and get the stress removed by the Tie. Make it harder for an opponent to flank the shuttle.

Rexlar Brath (37)

- Predator (3)

- Heavy Laser Cannon (7)

Omicron Shuttle (21)

- Heavy Laser Cannon (7)

- Advanced Sensors (2)

- Gunner (5)

- Tactical Jammer (1)

Black Squad Tie Fighter (14)

- Wingman (2)

Hmm after looking at all these I'm wondering about something like this:

Vessery

Royal Guard Interceptor

2x Bombers

What do you guys think? I can figure out the usual upgrades for the Royal Guard but what for the other 3?

Assuming the Bombers are the minimum PS ones, that leaves you with 11 points for upgrades. Not a lot. I think the Bombers are out of place here and I would ditch them for another Royal Guard or ditch the Royal Guard for another Bomber. In my experience, Bombers only really work in packs. How about this:

Vessery in Defender with Lone Wolf and Stealth Device

3 x Scimitar Squad Bombers with Proton Bombs

The Bombers can all Target Lock ships and can't be ignored with all those Proton Bombs.

I like it Darth but I only have 2 bombers in my collection atm.

I also like the Defender and want to make it somehow work anddue to you already bringing in the TIE/x1, i like to concentrate on rexler a little more.

Funnily i thought of using a phantom as the support ship Oo

Rexler Brath (37)

HLC (7)

Outmaneuver (3)

Lieutenant Colzet (23)

TIE/x1 (0)

Accuracy Corrector (0)

Sigma Squadron Pilot (25)

Fleet Officer (3)

Stygium Particle Accelerator (2)

Total: 100

what do you think can the fleet officer work on a phantom to make a TL+Focus on both other ships worth it?

Colzet with ATC would be so much greater but i´m 1 point short ;(

Ok wow, so much good stuff around:

I'm gonna try this!

Colonel Vessery — TIE Defender 35

Veteran Instincts 1

Heavy Laser Cannon 7

Ship Total: 43

Omicron Group Pilot — Lambda-Class Shuttle 21

Advanced Sensors 3

Weapons Engineer 3

ST-321 3

Ship Total: 30

Saber Squadron Pilot — TIE Interceptor 21

Push the Limit 3

Stealth Device 3

Ship Total: 27

Things can be changed around, stealth/hull on the colonel instead of Adv sensors on shuttle.

Can take VI off the colonel too and make the saber a Royal guard and move them at the same time.

You have the shuttle throw out two target locks from the start and just keep them out there to be used when needed and your opponent has to guess who vessery will target and the interceptor also makes himself annoying!

Vessery + VI

Soontir Fel + PTL + AT

2 x Scimitar Squadron Bombers

100 pts

A beefy little list that gets to use Soontir and Vessery. I'm not sold on the switch from Target CPU to Autothrusters though.

you will be, you will be....

Rexler Brath (37)

- Veteran Instincts (1)

- Proton Rockets (3)

- Ion Cannon (3)

Commander Kenkirk (44)

- Lone Wolf (2)

- Ysanne Isard (4)

- Rebel Captive (3)

- Recon Specialist (3)

Just a two-ship squad that I threw together, for much like yourself, I've wanted to incorporate the Defender in a usable manner. With luck, the proton rocket could be used for spike damage on an unsuspecting target that is distracted by the VT-49.

A defender list I'm playing right now and enjoying a ton:

Rexler Brath (46)

- Lone Wolf

- Heavy Laser Cannon

Howlrunner (18)

3x Academy Pilot (36)

100/100 points

You use the Howlrunner mini swarm to soak fire and do as much damage and blocking as possible while Rexler flanks. The biggest goal is to end with a mostly untouched Rexler fighting a crippled enemy force by the time the entire mini swarm is dead. Rexler should fly carefully and focus on surviving to the end game, where he should be able to easily dominate with Lone Wolf, HLC, and good mobility.

I tend to prefer simpler builds without so many extra cards because honestly I have a hard time keeping track of all of them in-game. I've thought about running this simple build. They'd obviously have to fly in close formation at all times but the defenders would be pretty deadly focusing fire and Jonas increasing their odds for hits. And that's before focus tokens and target locks. Any thoughts?

Tie Bomber - Captain Jonas

I was thinking, since Vessery gets alot of help from targetlock's and the new advanced use them naturally for their offence they seem to be symbiotic with him, instead of HAVING to buy a shuttle that dishes them out or upgrade ships with TC for him to use. But this will have to wait for the raider unless your gaming crew doesen't min proxy's.

So here goes my Idea of an Heavy crit list including Vessery:

Commander Alozen — TIE Advanced 25
Veteran Instincts 1
Advanced Targeting Computer 1
TIE/x1 0

Colonel Vessery — TIE Defender 35
Outmaneuver 3
Cluster Missiles 4

Maarek Stele — TIE Advanced 27
Outmaneuver 3
Advanced Targeting Computer 1
TIE/x1 0

The general idea here is ofcourse that Vessery will probably allready have Targeted enemies here quite often since the advanced use target lock's presistently with their new ability (and that he fires after both the others). Outmanouver will help his K'turns, and the cluster missile , if fired on something that is allready Locked, you will get to reroll the second wave of missile's since he always aquire a new one on an allready locked enemy. That is mostly for fun though, You could change it out for either one more shield/ hull or a mangler cannon if you want to take the crit game even further. Or if it suits you better, you could change outmaneuver for predator on him. Alot of possibilities here but generally a list that fires outside it's own weight class. And all pilots are a threat here , not just him and the list has a balanced synergy in my opinion. Maarek is a crit monster of his own, and Alozen always get TL's for free in range one which helps both him and the Colonel.
