How to Improve Armada

By Amanal, in Star Wars: Armada

Colour code the upgrade icons.

My opponent and I are old blokes with failing eyesight and quite often we find ourselves in a game where one of us is not playing correctly because the upgrade we have shouldn't be used on that particular ship.

I think you should reconsider the title of your thread. How to "improve" is a very subjective term. While your suggestion has a very objective point thus its own value, using such a vague title will not increase views or make a point.

Now asking why FFG games doesn't have good accessibility for consumers with poor eyesight or colorblindness is very much a relevant question and one that should be asked. Now it is harder to make design changes to include aesthetics for table top games even if it is to improve accessibility to the game. Still critics like these should be made aware for FFG's future products which may even include a re-edition of its current miniature games.

Making the upgrade icons more distinct in some way would indeed be an improvement to the game — I have no problem with this thread's title. I'm not at all sure what is vague about it...

Nearly half the threads are suggestions on how to "improve" this game. Now for many of those threads the improvement while may be good for one aspect of the game often is not an improvement for all other aspects and not an improvement as a whole. Hence why the word "improve" is often subject to interpretation.

Now as with what the OP saying that the game needs some improvements on visual aids to help those with poor eyesight is not subject to interpretation, it is more of a fact. I have good eyesight and I even get the upgrades confused as to what slot they fill. Using the title "Game need visual improvements for players with poor eyesight" would be a better title than "Improve Armada" as the first question asked from that title would be, "what needs to be improved?"

But yes the game cards are a little hard on the eyes.

Well I was playing off that to some extent.

Just having a coloured background on the icons would mean looking accross the table I can see my opponents Engine Techs should be on his VCD. Even players with great eye sight would have trouble doing that.

Sharpies! :D

**** the resale value

I wish that X-Wing and Armada had a different way to determine initiative.

It's not as important in X-Wing because of pilot skill, but I really don't like idea of tanking points to get initiative.

I think that 300 point games should be played at 300 points, not 290 or 295.

I would rather roll off or something.

Roll off = RNG = bad idea

Rather you earn the initiative by paying for the choice instead of getting lucky.

It's far too huge a swing to be decided by roll

I was thinking of highlighter pens. I don't expect in the years to come there will be much resale value, I am playing this every chance I get, those cards will be worn out any way.

You are not tanking points to get initiative. You are paying for it. But instead to make an upgrade card named "1 Point initiative" and have a bunch of them made and increase the cost of the game, it was simplified to, whatever points you do not spend on something else goes toward the price you pay for initiative.

Ageed. The icons are tiny and some of them look very similar. I get around this by using an army builder. My eyes are fine and I often can't tell, let along looking across the table at my opponents cards. One of the very few flaws with the game (along with the poor painting on the wave 1 models).

(Amanal, you don't happen to play FoW in Aus do you?)

Hell, I routinely go under-cost so I can choose to be second player and get the benefits of the second player slot on the missions I chose for my objectives hand specifically for that reason. ;)

That way, no matter what my opponent chooses from my hand, I have a tactical advantage of some sort.

That's pregame strategy and I love it.

I also think that a player who wants to play 300 points can and they'll just have to get used to being the first player two thirds of the time (or thereabouts) and learn how to pick their opponents missions that suits their strategy. Probably not a bad skill to learn, because even if you under bid there may be someone that goes harder than you do.

I find the whole process is one of those great ideas that just make you think and think some more. So, probably as much as anything I am with ya Deathseed, it's a great part of the game, so very enjoyable thinking about it.

Rolling off is horrible in a strategy game, I love how they set it up in their games. Its a strategy ahead of the game ...

so, build for 300 then. that's perfectly legal and not nessicarily a bad idea. You will have a points advantage over your opponent, of course, he will determine the objective. great games force tough choices.

I would like to see pre-painted fighters become a thing. Go ahead and double the price or something. I don't have the skill/time to paint fighters so I would really appreciate the opportunity to buy them already painted. FFG could just sell both painted and non-painted versions. Problem is that multiple SKUs are always rough on retail space so this is a pipe dream. Still, it would be cool.

Regarding the upgrade icon, there's a larger icon on the back of each card

Which doesn't really help of you can't tell which icons are which on the ship card.

I have posted in a couple of threads on painting.

I am not too sure that prepainted fighters will be something we ever see.

So if I can I would just encourage you to give it a try. The models are so tiny, they are a good start beleive it or not. Just getting the colours in about the right hue and in about the right spot will look amazing. The trick is, not to let those little mistakes and errors overwhelm you and become a problem.

Steering this back on topic... as vague as it was posted...

Games like Ticket to Ride use a combination of colour and symbol to differentiate game components. It's really the best of both worlds for those gamers with a colour impairment but can see the shapes easier, or the (I think?) majority of gamers who can readily identify the red/blue/green/yellow/black palette. It's a good way to go, and very inclusive from a community awareness point of view.

Get the size yellow sleeves and mark those so you don't have to deface the card As for the ship cards get the size orange and just mark the upgrades. So sort of use the sleeves as an overlay you can draw on.
