What Skill for Preformance Art

By Kesendeja, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

My character recently took the Performer specilization under Colonist and I ran into a spot of trouble.

It states you use coordination for dancing, but what about a musical insterment or singing? Would they be seperate skills or fit under an already existing one?

Any ideas?

Probably charm.

I would agree Charm. The performance is what is being gauged, not the manner of its delivery.

Maybe a check of Cool, then Charm

Cool to see if you can keep calm, Adv/Threat and Tri/Des used to influence the Charm check (Boost/Setback/Upgraded dice etc.)

I would keep it to just one single check. Personally, I would lean towards charm, but I would allow my player to pitch me a suggested skill.

My GM actually created Perform as a custom skill for our Performer.

Coordination for musical instruments, I'd say: it's about using your hands deftly.

For singing, probably Charm, but maybe Leadership? For things like leading chants or rounds or something.

This sounds like a good place for a custom skill of some sort.

No one if it's a not so important moment, but if this has so much importance in your game you have various options like:

- Consider Knowledges itself.

- Mechanics if it's a technical drawing.

- Charm or other social skill if it's a pure artistic one and considering the feeling that do you want to put on it.

Also, if this is a REALLY important skill on your game, you can always create the "Perform" (with variable stat) skill or something similar.

I would say it would depend on the result you want.

  • Charm if you want to impress or if there is a competition to be the best. Performance is much about how you make people feel.
  • Deception possibly if you are trying bluff that you have some ability, or perhaps acting.
  • Leadership if you are trying to "gather the troops" or improve morale.

mouthymerc has it. It doesn't matter so much what you're doing but what effect you're trying to get out of it.

This is what I'd do.

Thank you for the answers. I've brought them up to my group and we decided that it depends on the effect like Mouthymerc suggested.

The beauty of this game is that if you can justify the skill, use it! Under the correct circumstances, you can use Coercion for your performance. . . .

Mind you, these circumstances require you to have a 50 foot tall amplifier with wheels that can travel 200 miles an hour, covered in Taiko Drummers and an electric guitar that also doubles as a flame thrower - but it could happen!
