Tournament next week: two Imperial squads to choose from

By Parakitor, in X-Wing Squad Lists

There's a small store tournament next week, and I am trying to decide what to bring.

Defensimator
Academy Pilot
"Night Beast"
"Dark Curse"
Commander Kenkirk (Determination, Ysanne Isard, Gunner, Rebel Captive)
100 points
I was going to drop Rebel Captive to pick up Moff Jerjerrod and upgrade the Academy to an Obsidian, but I decided I needed Rebel Captive to help me shut down Soontir Fel, Advanced Cloaking Device, or Adv. Sensors IG-2000's. This build is quite a pain to fight because everybody is focused on staying alive, which is kind of my play style in any game. The mid-PS of the TIEs has also proven to be quite versatile. I had lots of success when the Decimator first came out, but the loud cry against "pancakes" convinced me to stop playing it. I haven't flown it for a couple months.
The Empire's Finest
Soontir Fel (Push the Limit, Royal Guard TIE, Autothrusters, Shield Upgrade)
Carnor Jax (Push the Limit, Royal Guard TIE, Autothrusters, Shield Upgrade)
Captain Yorr (Fire-control System, Darth Vader)
100 points
Here, Yorr is able to take Rebel Captive stress away from Soontir Fel. This has been a pretty successful archetype for me, but I haven't ever tried it with Vader on board. It used to be Rebel Captive, but nobody shot the shuttle. Then I tried Mara Jade, but it only helped me win matches I was already winning. Vader should help cover the tough match ups, like opposing TIE interceptors or...TIE interceptors. I can're really think about what else Vader is good at destroying. I mostly like this list because I get to fly TIE interceptors - they are deadly and cool.
Any opinions on which to run? Or even ways you might modify them? I have no idea what kind of squads I'll be up against. Maybe some Rebel big turret squads and dual IG-2000 squads. There will probably be some weird, off the wall stuff, too. Thanks in advance!

Both interesting builds for sure. I think I would go with the second one. Here's a variant to consider maybe:

Soontir (PTL, RGT, Autothrusters, Stealth Device)

Carnor (PTL, RGT, Autothrusters, Stealth Device)

Yorr (FCS, Vader, Tactician)

100 points

I think your second list is better, honestly. If you were to go with the first, I suggest engine over Ysanne, but I find positional abilities to be really useful, ymmv.

I also prefer shield over stealth, so I like your 2nd list as is. I think double tactician might be good, but giving up FCS? That's tough...

I think vader may prove useful in many matchups, not just against TIES. Once your other ships knock off shields, a really nasty crit on any fat ship could really swing things in your favour. Won't always work out that way, but trading your shuttle to give your interceptors better odds of destroying a big ship is probably worth it.

Thanks for the thoughts. A lot of people underestimate that first list, but I've done pretty well with it. Engine Upgrade is unarguably a strong card, but against high-PS squads, especially those with lower ship counts, I value that automatic evade token more. However, I'm leaning towards the interceptor list currently, acknowledging that I have plenty of time to change my mind.

-vs Chiraneau, you can get in front of him and use boost to maintain range 3 as often as possible to negate his ability and enhance kenkirk's (2 greens better than 1).

- vs arc-dodgers, its easier to get a timely block if the opportunity presents itself

- vs anything with forward only arc, you might still be able to dodge their arc even if they have higher PS if you can pass them (and possibly range 1 shot for you).

- if they try to flee and win by time, you can catch them easily, or if you find your decimator out of the fight due an unexpected move, you can get back in faster - which can matter in a timed situation.

Well, I took my TIE interceptor squad. There were only five people.

First match was against Leebo (Outrider, Mangler Cannon, Push the Limit, Kyle Katarn) and Chewbacca (C-3PO, Millennium Falcon). I managed a full win, losing only the shields off my TIE interceptors: a decisive victory.

Next match was against my arch nemesis, who brought Admiral Chiraneau (Determination, Darth Vader, Gunner, Intelligence Agent, Engine Upgrade) and "Whisper" (Intelligence Agent, Fire-control Systems, Veteran Instincts, Advanced Cloaking Device). I flew terrible. I always get skittish around Vader Crew, and even more-so when he has Gunner. I shied away from a straight fight, when I should have dove in with all ships flying at the Decimator, maybe even using the shuttle to attempt to block his Boost. Instead all my ships were destroyed, and I got to roll attack dice once the entire game. Pitiful and embarrassing. But a learning experience, I guess. Decivaders are just scary things!

Third match I got the bye, leaving me at 3rd place. Meh. Wish there were more people there. I've gotta practice flying against Decivaders more.

list 2 is better build.

List 1 could be better. But you'd have to start going RAC, Isard, RC, etc. Howl 3tie or Soontir.

Oicunn really isnt bad either.
