Painters, Gimme Colour Advice

By R2-EQ, in Star Wars: Armada

For Armada I've painted up some nice TIEs and X-Wings and I sat down tonight to tackle a B-Wing and Y-Wing. Here's a pic of my core set paint ups.

After looking at pictures, the B-Wing movie model looks kind of grey and I'm not happy with my initial results for my mini.

Any painters out there been tackling the B-Wing colours? What are you going with, leaving it white? I primed in white and washed in a grey, but it was a bit too light. Then I used thinned deck tan but it looked off. I'm not sure how to get a good light grey on a model of that size. Should I go grey and just drybrush? Is leaving white there ok?

My X-Wings are white with a brown wash, so i'm worried if I go too grey the B-wings will really stand out from the rest of the rebel fighters, and they shouldn't.

I'm probably overthinking it, but maybe someone out there has some good B-wing painting advice. If you do, I'm all ears!

Well a good compromise for all rebel fighters is to avoid white and hit up Vallejo Stone Grey or GW Deneb Stone. Both provide a great base colour, although I have been tempted to simply wash right over the fighters bare plastic.

B-Wings look like a blueish grey so I may go with Uthuan grey from the Games Workshop Line.

Y-Wings are more of a khaki color, so maybe Menoth Base Highlight from Privateer Press.

Pro Tip, if your store sells paints and X-wing. Grab the X-wing figs in the blisters and bring them to the paint wracks and just match like that.

I just finished my imperial ships and I need to start my rebels over the holiday weekend. I'll let you know what i decide to use paint wise but im leaning towards what I posted above.

BergerFett, don't use FFG models as you're referance (unless you want to). Their colours are not movie model standard. The X-wing and Y-Wing are actually pretty white as a base colour, just very dirty and covered with replacement panels.

The problem with old pictures is that the lighting is bad, and the current models from 30 years ago have faded a little. Modern modellers consistently paint the Y and X White however. Here are some pics of Y-Wings.

So I'd suggest staying away from Khaki on Y-Wings. Just dirty them up with brown/black washes.

B-Wings are harder to figure out. Movie shots are discoloured.

But modelers seem to paint them more greysih. Like here:

So what colour, or mix do you think I should use to get that kind of grey?

I tried to go the lazy way of just washing the white basecoat but it looks bad. Too much white.

I'm thinking of giving is a light grey base. The white is too white. Any thoughts on how to get a good colour?

For the B-Wing i still say Uthuan Grey (GW) + fenrisian grey (GW) for the grey / blue grey.

While i appreciate the dedication to movie quality, i learned in my FOW that if you paint camo on 15mm men, no one will notice at table top length.

I think you can get away with an eggshell type white/khaki for the x/y-wings and it will simulate the diry white really well. even take bleached bone and do a 50/50 white and make it really lightly off white. That's my plan.

Side note ive always wondered how people got those jobs, id love to be a professional modeler.

Haha. Yup. I think they probably started doing it as a hobby and then got into it as a full blown career. Definitely a fun job if you love building models.

I'll take a look at the pallete for the GW greys you mentioned. Personally, I've moved towards Vallejo paints so maybe there is an equivallent. Thanks for the advice.

I'd say just go white and when you have all your colors in place wash over the ships in an ink wash, make em look grimy.

I use a light to medium gray with a heavy black wash.
