So, how would you go about taking advantage of Torkil Mux?

By joyrock, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So in making a good scum list, I've really been wanting to make good use of Torkil Mux, partly because I like the HWK so much, and partly because I love that ability. So here's what I came up with:

99 points

PILOTS

N’Dru Suhlak (26)
Z-95 Headhunter (17), Cluster Missiles (4), Dead Man's Switch (2), Predator (3)

Torkhil Mux (31)
HWK-290 (19), Ion Cannon Turret (5), Tactician (2), Inertial Dampeners (1), Engine Upgrade (4)

Guri (42)
StarViper (30), Predator (3), Virago (1), Autothrusters (2), Advanced Sensors (3), “Hot Shot” Blaster (3)

I think this is pretty straightforward. With good positioning, N'Dru can get off 8 attack dice, with 4 rerolls, which can absolutely melt a lot of ships, and can remain a reasonably cheap threat after, and possibly a blocker with Dead Man's Switch. Mux ideally wants to be hanging out at range 2, and getting off that combination of Ion and Stress is incredibly powerful, while Engine Upgrade can hopefully help keep him in the fight, and then Guri is just a good general fighter, and can make great use of Predator when combined with her ability.

I'm not completely sold on it, though. A lot of the list is just filling in points, and I'm not sure if I'd be better off trading out Guri, as I'm honestly not a huge fan of the Starviper, so I'm curious what you people would do with Mux.

N'Dru should always wear Lone Wolf. If N'Drus not at least R3 away from friendly ships, you're paying way too much for a standard Z, and if he is, there's no EPT better than Lone Wolf. If you build him to be unforgiving, it'll help you learn to pilot him better.

But in this case, Lone Wolf is more forgiving(and less efficient) than Predator. Lone Wold rerolls one blank result on attacking or defending, while with this list, you don't get a reroll while defending, but you get two rerolls per attack, and you can reroll focus as well

I think I would drop the hot shot blaster and dead man's switch to give Suhlak engine upgrade, I think it will help him get range 2 to ensure maximum effectiveness from his missiles. Also it will help the overall maneuverability of the fairly sluggish (in the eyes of an A-Wing player) Z-95

I love Torkhil. My next tournament I will probably use him in a squad. Going to my first tournament with that ez mode dual Fat Turrets.

I considered this, but I came up with two issues. First, that's a lot of points to be investing in a ship that's not supposed to live particularly long. Second, how much would it really help me if I also needed to get a target lock?

Not a terrible idea, I'm just not certain.

I have to agree on using Lone Wolf instead of predator. Not only will it keep him alive longer, but I wouldn't assume you get two rerolls per attack with predator (since cluster missiles works best against low agility ships like the Deci, or Falcon, and those are both usually high PS). Remember that that only triggers when attacking a pilot of PS 2 or lower.

Aside from that though I like the basics of the build. I'm not completely sold on the Starviper either despite a few successes with it in the past. But Torkil looks fantastic in that, and I personally want to see more HWKs on the table.

Well first thing first, the very last thing I'd do is fly ndru. Here are the rules for playing ndru.

1.) Do you need a third ship for you 3 ship list? If so, whatever you do do not pick a gimped X Wing.

2.) You're already flying a gimped X Wing. Don't waste even more points. At the most just put Lone Wolf or Adrenaline Rush on him and call it a day.

3.) If you already are flying a Z-95 in your list and have an extra 5 points, go ahead and pick ndru.

Every time I face ndru he's way off to the side on a flanking run, so generally I'll wheel my ships around and vaporize the useless gimped X wing for an easy 20 points. His ability isn't conducive to a good squad, he gets isolated fairly easily and since he's only a Z 95 he ends up dying without doing anything.

What I would do is fly 6 Z-95's with Mux. The scum HWK pilots in particular give you a lot of options for 'swarm+' builds. After the 6 Z's you have 28 points to play around with, more than enough to kit out Mux pretty well.

Main reason I'm going with Predator is because of Torkil; the idea is that he can drop someone down, then N'dru can wipe them out. Other than that, I would certainly agree with Lone Wolf.

Methinks you missed the point: Torkil makes them ps 0, so you always get the predator double reroll.

Haha, LOL. I completely missed that dynamic, sorry 'bout that!

I would drop tactician and dampeners for flight instructor to keep torkil alive better.

Literally anything would be better than Flight Instructor. Recon Specialist would be better for offense, even just no crew and a 4 point initiative bid is probably better. If you ALWAYS have a focus token on a HWK for defense their survivability isn't too bad.

I'm not sure that this is a completely true statement. If you can get the 'their skill is <=2' on command like Torkil can, rerolling a blank isn't particularly bad

I ran this quite awhile back with some kind advice and suggestions from Blail Blerg,

Torkil + ion T

2 x Blk Sun S

1 x Thug + title + blaster T + R4 agro

1 x Thug + ion T + R4 agro

99pts

Had some good success with it....before the nerf, this list killed phantoms dead...

Cheers Folks! :)

Guri (predator + thrusters)

Mux (blaster + recon + moldy)

3 BLOODY PIRATES!!!

Mux himself is strangely, just like all scum HWKs, a ******* badass. Because he always shoots before whatever his ability targets, he and Guri can destroy most any small ship before it gets to shoot. Getting the complete crow package always makes him very durable (skywalker status) and surprisingly punchy (all dat focus lets you even get a TL + focus combo going)

Mux's ability is hugely advantageous against fat **** that normally get to 1 shot your Z-95s before they shoot. Well, now they get to eat dice before they drop :)

Saw this list in a video. If anyone has any ideas around this:

Kavil: Autoblaster Turret, Unhinged Astromech, VI

Torkil Mux: Ion Cannon Turret

Syndicate Thug #1: Ion Cannon Turret, Unhinged Astromech, BTL-A4 Y-Wing

Syndicate Thug #2: Ion Cannon Turret, Unhinged Astromech, BTL-A4 Y-Wing

Torkil+ICT+crow title

Xizor+title+FCS+thrusters

3Xbinyare

leaves one point for inititative bid, AS instead of FCS, or VI (which may not be worth it since you have torkil)
