Questions about obstructions

By kami689, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

Still new to the game and was reading through the RRG to get more familiar with the game and I came across something in the obstacles/obstructed section (page 8) that got me thinking.

So my question is, say I move one of my squadrons into an asteroid field/debris field (right on top of it) and say my opponent had a squadron (or even squadrons) within distance 1 of the new placement of my squadron. Would our fighters be able to attack one another, or would the LoS be considered obstructed?

Just a little confused if this scenario would fall under the "If line of sight is drawn over an obstacle, the attack is obstructed even if the bases of the attacker and defender are touching". If I am reading it correctly they would not be able to attack. If I am correct it brings me to my next question: would those two squadrons be engaged? Because if they are the enemy squadrons would be locked up not able to do anything.

Thanks in advanced for any help with this question.

They could shoot but would be obstructed so lose a dice,

Obstruction breaks engagement, so while they could shoot at each other they are also free to move away.

I do confess, I'm a little confused how 2 round bases can be touching, but have a line from closest point to closest point that isn't actually a single point. Does it just mean that if the point the 2 squadrons are touching is over an obstacle then they are not engaged?

Yes.

Look at it the other way, you draw a line from closest point to closest point, if it goes over an obstacle there is an obstruction. Ok you say then, what about if they are touching on an obstacle, they must be engaged now since there is no distance to cover? Nope, not engaged - that's why they needed to add the bit about base contact.

Thank you for clearing that up. Not sure why i was thinking they couldnt attack....i completely skipped the whole "remove one die from the pool" part lol.

But the bit they added is still confusing since if they are touching there is no line from closest point to closest point. You can't draw a line from one point to itself, so the "line" doesn't go over an obstacle, it doesn't exist. They should have said something like "if 2 squadrons are in base to base contact with each other and the point of contact overlaps an obstacle the squadrons are not engaged and any attacks made against the other are obstructed."

I think the part about touching and obstructions is for ships, not for squadrons.

And what in the rules makes you think that?
