New scoring method idea - feasible?

By MrkvChain, in X-Wing

Hi guys and girls,

there have been many threads about partial points, why fat turrets are a problem, etc. There are many proposals for changes on the scoring system, as well as "nerfs" for turreted ships. (At least primary turreted ships)

So here is my idea how to change the scoring system which might help also when not playing turreted ships:

After the end of the game, if you have destroyed all enemy ships, you win as normal. When at the end of the round you and your opponent both have ships on the board, the TO has to decide how the game ended. Basically, he decides who would have won the game, when you played it till the end. If he can't say who'll win for certain, it'll be a draw. When both players have Corran with R2D2 left, that might be a perfect example of a draw.

For MoV consideration, the TO would then decide which ships count for the computation. The TO could say that Han with one hull point left does not count, because your opponents two full health B-Wings point in the right direction and would have killed him in the next round.

The MoV would then be computed as normal, with the exception that ships the TO did not count, give full points to the opponent.

I hope this is not too counfusing and you understand what I mean. The short version would be: At the end of a round, the TO looks at the current state of the game and can declare ships destroyed; then, MoV is calculated as normal.

Would that be feasible? Would you accept such a ruling? Does it make things even worse? Would you like to be a TO with this ruling?

Thanks for reading the longer post. I'm looking forward to read you replys.

Not feasible. You're asking one person to judge the end of potentially 256 games (that's if all games at worlds would go to time).

Makes it so much worse it's not even funny.

No I don't think it would be. It would be unfair to the TO and the players. Many wouldn't accept the ruling and would try to argue with the TO about it.

You'd end up with a bunch of "I shot you" "No you didn't I dodged" type arguments. Plus the TO is typically busy enough that he or she doesn't have time to look at each game and make that kind of judgement, even in a small 16 player game, in a 64+ player game you'd need a bunch of judges and not all of them are going to agree.

Sure Chewie may be sitting on 7 damage cards looking at 2 interceptors left on the board, but it's not out of the realm of possibility for Chewie to one shot one of them, have the survivor whiff and then die the next round.

Pause the Battle of Yavin right as the X-Wings lock their S-foils in attack position. Determine who would win.

Nah that would lead to a lot of anger. People already rage at TO's for making arc and range calls.

ew no

dice deciding the game by leaving turrets on 1/2 hull are bad enough, but at least dice aren't subjective

This may sound extreme but this may be the WORST idea on how to 'fix' scoring that I've ever heard.

You'd better hope I'm not friends with that Judge and may have slipped him a 20 to make sure I 'win' all of those judgement calls.

The point of almost all scoring systems is to make things more objective and less subjective. Even those sports that rely on subjective scoring (e.g. Boxing, ice skating) do it in such a way as you use multiple judges, and/or excluding high/low scores to prevent extreme scores from unfairly skewing the results.

Your method is not only time consuming, but also fraught with issues.

That being said I am all for more draws. I think the draw threshold should probably be 0-11 points with no more modified wins. Modified wins don't really help anyone, and then become inconsequential in elimination rounds. I believe in a close game the loser should get something out if it (other than (at that point) pretty meaningless MoV).

Why do people keep posting these threads, it's not like the forums get to decide what the rules are. The tournament rules are handled internally by FFG, not by anyone posting in these forums. If you guys want FFG to see these ideas, just email them instead of cluttering up the forums.

Evacuate? In our moment of triumph?
