I didn't realize this game was going to be so expensive.

By knasserII, in Star Wars: Armada

seeing some of the people splurge makes me feel better about my own purchases :P

I got 2 Nebs ( :o)

A corv

2 reb fighters

a fattie...and then another fattie at my LGS because I couldn't wait any more

and then a victory and 2 imp packs just in case some crazy bastard apart from me doesn't want to play with star destroyers all the time

Rebel scum

also, ofc instead of being productive I went ahead to chart out a 400 point list <_<

Yeesh, it's hard to fit in 3 fatties! But 2 fatties and an escort frigate, especially the yavaris alongside haven, now that's just interesting ;)

To be honest, I consider Armada to be my cheap game. :) But that's mostly because I'm not buying a ton of stuff for it. I'm finding so far that that one each of wave 1 will give me plenty of options and I don't feel the need for a 2nd AF or even GSD. Wave 2 looks to be about the same, I might double up on the Raider but that's it.

To the OP, slow buy what you want over months, not days.

Also, this is what you should ask for as birthday / Christmas gifts. Someone can drop $20 as a gift, and you've got your CR90.

When Wave 2 comes out, 6-, 7-, and 8-CR90 swarm lists will be viable. I don't normally play Rebels, but having a 6-CR90/Mon Mothma/*big* fighter swarm would be interesting to run ;)

Sure :) But I don't know if it's $100 worth of fun. I went a bit overboard with X-Wing stuff, 6 Z-95's 8 Tie Fighters, 6 X-Wings, ect... I don't really regret it, but at the same time I'm not going to do the same thing with Armada.

In X-Wing I have so many lists I can put together that I doubt I'll ever play them all, even if I stopped buying new stuff. So if with Armada if I have 10 or so rebel and 10 or so imperial lists that will be plenty for me.

for sure, though, you don't need too many models to get a lot of variance out of this game

hell, keeping the same fleet and just exchanging commanders gives you a completely different feeling (an akbar triple fattie parada is going to be nothing like a Garm triple fattie floatzilla), not to mention how objectives shape the game

I did, too. It has come in handy when supplying ships for 1-2 other people who forgot their stuff, though :). I think that if I were to run it, I'd probably borrow what I don't have as much as possible, rather than just purchase it. I'm going to try an stay around 2 for each large, 2-3 for each medium, and around 3 for each small ship.

The list I'm playing with features only the Core set, a Glad, and 1 Imperial Squadron pack (so far.)

I purchased a second VSD, so I'm probably using a card or two from that, but I'm only fielding 1VSD.

VSD II with Tarkin alone is 123 points. Throw in a Liaison for a few points. Glad II is 62 points. Expanded Launchers is another 13.

Just this small list and 100 worth of fighters gets you very close to 300 total, plus there are other combos, too.

I don't expect Wave 2 until mid-late August. It will probably pre-release at Gencon. At Gencon they already said if it is released it will not be legal.

I think it's inexpensive.

Coming from a long history of miniature games (WM/H, GW games, Spartan Games and Malifuax and I think one or two more but I am blanking now) I find Armada the most cost effective game I own that includes X-Wing too.

This game is deff my cheapest and its PAINTED!

I'm still struggling to get the big problem here. You've bought a core set, both fighter packs, and one extra expansion per side. And, as many have said and shown, that's more than enough to make two 300 point fleets. That's what I did with my buddy, and we've already thrown down at 300. He takes the Empire, while I sail for the Alliance. Granted, I'm spending half as much as you, but you can easily play with what you have.

You have more than enough to run competitive lists without spending more.

Also, Wave 2 isn't going to be out for at least another year so you have 5+ months to save up?

Wave 2 is coming out in July, per our Deep Throat.

I haven't actually played it yet, but having now looked at the points for things and read in the book that a standard battle is 300 points, I'm already struggling to make up a 300 point fleet with what I have.

Well the squadrons are very important to the game, so you are looking at 200 points for ships and upgrades. Which is very acheivable with what you have.

Rather than give you a list I am going to suggest something else:

  1. FAB's Fleet Generator
  2. Select that you have 1 core, 1 Gladiator and so on, or copy and paste 10010122 into the Quick Selection Text Box.
  3. Now click on the random button and you'll get two random fleets using what you have.

The problem you will have otherwise is you'll end up building the most efficient fleet you can from what you have and thus play the same fleet game after game. Now I don't know about you but that will end up being the death of a game for me, too much repetition.

You can also find some of the title, commander and upgrade cards for the ships you have here and there online and for home play a proxy or print of the card will ensure you get just a little more juice from what you have. If you do this then you could click on the REFINE button near the core set and remove the VSD from the core set, then add in the expansion for the VSD which will then add in the various cards you get in the expansion that aren't in the core.

  1. Go to FAB's Fleet Generator
  2. Copy and Paste 11010122 into the Quick Selector
  3. Refine the Core Set and remove: the ships and pilots for the Nebulon B and Star Destroyer.
  4. Random up some fleets and enjoy.

Overall I am very much enjoying the game, the missions and the fact that you are making lots of decisions during a turn makes the game challenging and fun. I hope my ideas will help keep the game fun for you and what you have, at least to the point where you slowly add more and find that nice balance of what you have and feel you need.

wait, really?

you have a core set (Victory), a glad, and 1 imperial pack and you can't make 300 points?

Here, I'll help ya out

Victory - 1

*Skreeeeeeeeed

*veteran Captain

*flight controllers (victory expansion, but you can just proxy it)

*hangars

[113]

Gladiator - 1

*Wulf

*engine Techs (use wulf for Nav token spam to constantly enable)

*assault concussion missiles

*Demolisher

[88]

Howlie

4 Tie Fighters

2 Tie Interceptors

Rhymer

Bomber

[296 total]

alternatively,

2 Advance (not a bomber, but 75% of damage against capital ships; rhymer is not restricted to bombers)

Soontir

4 tie fighters

Rhymer

Bomber

[300 total]

I was beaten by a variation of this list (had 2 imp packs for howlie, 4 interceptors, rhymer and 2 bombers; chiraneau on Skreed & insidious instead of demolisher) using two space whales and 6 x-wings

I lost gallant haven and 6 x-wings against Skreed's flagship, 2 interceptors, and a bomber. **** is scary.

and you can easily go more capital ship heavy by scaling up to tarkin with Victory II and dominator or w.e; all sorts of things :D

point is, you don't need that much. what you have is perfectly sufficient

Why do I have a mental image of William Shatner yelling that?

Nah, kirk's the guy on the star destroyer yelling Gaaaarmmmmmmmm!

Excepting HotT and DBA which just involved repurposing miniatures from other games X-Wing and Armada are the cheapest minis games I've ever played, and not by a small amount. WFB, 40k and Flintloque alone probably account for around three grand of figures, paint, scenery and assorted gubbins.

You are talking about a miniatures game which starter set has a RSP ~$100 USD. It is not going to be cheap. Now while I'll agree the prices are on par with other miniature games with 2 faction partial army starter set around $60-$100 at retailers. But to play any of those games does require a significant financial expenditure.

Expensive?

sigh* I remember the days when I had that much disposable income. Blew it all on Warhammer 40,000 miniatures back then. -_-
