Attack and defense bonuses

By SchenTheRodian, in X-Wing

I know you get an attack bonus is the ship you are attack is in range one, and a defense bonus if the ship attacking you is at range 3. But does your ship have to be fully in the range one or range 3? Or do you get the bonus if any of your ship is in the range?

Should state if the stand is within range one you get plus one bonus to attack. If the ship is beyond range two but within range three you get plus one defense. Hope that helps.

Range is determined closest point (in arc) to closest point (in arc). If that range is 1 (i.e. closer than 2), add an attack die. If it is 3 (i.e. farther than 2), add a defense die.

Range is always closest to closest. Arc is simply in arc or not.

However the closest point always sets the range. If a ship has one corner in range 1 but the rest of it is at range 2 the ship is considered range 1.

Only for turrets. Everyone else must measure within their arcs.

Attack and defense bonuses for range are only if the attack if made with a primary weapon.

Check out the FFG FAQs. It describes the difference between being "At" range and "Within" range.

"At" range mean that any part of the base can be touched by the range you are measuring for with the range ruler.

"Within" range means the entire base of the ship must be closer than the specified range on the range ruler.

So for your question, you measure from your base to the defender's base (and you must measure within the part of your base that is in your firing arc when using a primary weapon). If any part of the 1 range band on the range ruler touches the defender, its "at" range 1 and you get the extra die. For the defending ship to get the defense die, it must be completely outside the range 2 band but at least a part of it must be "at" range 3.

Hope that helps.

So to clarify, as long as any part of my ship's base is touching range 3, I get an extra defense die?

No. To be at range 3 your ship must be entirely beyond range 2. The closest point must be at range 3. Then you get one extra green.

And, in case it ever comes up: If the closest part of your ship is within range 3, but the rest of your ship is outside of range 3, you're still barely within firing range.

I honestly wasn't aware this could cause confusion, I made mistakes when I started as did we all but range seemed really straight forward.
