Having gotten an art degree, I have studied modern art quite a bit. I will agree that there is a lot of crap out there that is considered "art". Also, though, "modern" is pretty much anything from the 1800's onward. I don't agree that everything made in the last 20-50 years is terrible, though. Is there a lot that is bad? Absolutely. Is it all bad? No.
Don't confuse modern with abstract. Not all abstract is bad, just most of it.

I'll agree with that, but I was actually surprised to discover I liked Duchamp's "Urinal" piece after reading about the history of it and why he did it. I hate the rest of his work, but I like that piece.
The dadaists and surealists pushed hard to open the definition of what is "art". That some of it is not to your taste is understandable to say it isn't art though. That is not cool. We are richer as a culture for a broader artistic vision.

OK...I don't mean to question whether it's art or not. I do question whether it's good art or not. Anything done with intent can be considered "art". Someone living in a trailer park as a redneck with the intent of it being performance art can be called art, where some redneck just living in a trailer park isn't. That doesn't mean it's good or not. Of course, that is all subjective.
Oh i think the unintentional art is sometimes the best. I'd never try to dictate taste to someone else though.
It only becomes art when someone has the eye for it and declares it. You can have a bus stop sign out there and it's just a bus stop, but as soon as someone declares it "art" does it actually become art. Someone can grab it and put it in a gallery and call it art and it's art, just really bad art in most people's mind. Then again, all it takes is one millionaire to spend too much on it and justify it. There was once a Dutch prince who threw paint through his private jet's turbines to have it splatter on a canvas behind it. That's art, but really bad art in my opinion. Intellectually lazy art, but art.
