Starter Squad List Help

By bluemoose582, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Im looking for a look a bit a "simple" help ive just started to play X wing and ive found a local club who have tournements every couple of weeks and im looking for a list that wont show me up. Im dont mind losing at first just dont want to look a fool.

I currently have the core set, milleniuem falcon and tie advance packs. I dont mind buying a couple of other packs but I dont know which one to go for. Is it worth buyer a single ship pack (Xwing, Ywing, Tie fighter, etc) or going for a multi pack like the Imperal aces, Rebel aces or Scums and villains.

Amy help would be greatful.

First, you would want to select your faction. I like to think rebels as the heavy hitters, whereas the imperials are more swarm based. Not that there aren't heavy hitters in imperials or swarms in rebels. I would wait for flying scum, just so you can know the basics. If you rebels, a commonly used ship would be a B-Wing. It might role 1 evade, but is a ship that can certainly take hits. If you are imperials, a commonly used ship is the TIE Interceptor. But most people by the imperial aces pack, because it exclusively comes with cards that you can only find in that pack. Also the Rebel aces is good expansion too. It comes with some cards to make a B-Wing stronger than before. It also comes with some cards to help the A-Wong also. A-Wings are the rebel counter part of a TIE Intercepter.

PS if you are thinking about the X-Wing and TIE fighter expansion packs, I wouldn't get them unless you definitely will fly more than two TIEs or one X-Wing. They do come with different upgrade and pilot cards for the corresponding ship. I do have my eye on one pilot that comes with the X-Wing. Wedge Antilles has a pilot skill of nine and a unique ability: "When attacking an enemy ship, reduce its agility value by one." That would be useful against B-Wings, or the falcon (which both you will probably see in a tournament). Hope this helps!

Since you have the Falcon, maybe go Rebels. Pick up another X-wing expansion and see what you can come up with for two X-wings and a Falcon. If you find yourself short you can look at getting another expansion ship if needed. I think you will find the X-wing is a great ship to learn the game with and the Falcon is always solid.

Falcon and 2 Rookies is strong, almost as good as 3x Talas + Falcon, however the Falcon needs the upgrade cards from the Tantive set (Crew R2D2 and C3PO) to really shine.

With just the cards from the Falcon, Core, and 1 X-Wing you get

YT-1300 (Han Solo) - Chewbacca, Nein Numb, Veteran Instincts, Engine Upgrade

X-Wing (Rookie Pilot)

X-Wing (Rookie Pilot)

and a 1 point initiative bid.

Fly it well by supporting your Falcon with the rookies and you can do just fine at store events.

You've got the Falcon and an X-Wing which means one more Rebel ship (probably an Expansion X-Wing or a B-Wing) away from fielding an acceptable, although perhaps not optimized, squadron. You don't NEED the Corvette although its upgrades may help.

As for the Multipacs both Aces sets are very helpful.

Good points here. For the cost of one ship, you are ready to fly. Arguably, the next thing to look at might be another core set. You still get 3 ships for less than $15 each, though you will not get the cards you will eventually want. You get extra dice, a second set of everything. Now you can practice flying four TIE Fighters around your spare asteroids to improve your dial selection. This will pay for itself very quickly and you can always get someone else a copy of the rules if you are both learning.

Good luck from here out though, it is easy to watch the money fly out of the wallet/card... build a priority list... and try to stick with it. In the end, Fly Casual!

Thanks for all the advice and Ill take it on board. Im still learning the basic's with just a couple of basic games betweens mates but I've already added the imperal aces set and a Y-wing to the mix (To be honest only cause I liked the ships). Once I get a squad sorted and tried it out in my local club I will let you know how well I did.

ImpAces is a good set which should give you enough to field Imperials.

Adding a Y-Wing to the Core and Falcon should let you field a Rebel squadron that can perform with a bit of practice. It may not be optimal but it need not be embarrassing either.

Cheers, I can see how you mean about abit of practice for the rebel squad. All three have different movement skills, plus the large ship base of the falcon, where as the empire and all the same (or there about). Think ill try and try get a couple of games under my belt agaisnt mates before I turn up at the club nights.
