How to perform a Logistics test...

By Barbarossa, in Only War Rules Questions

Hello all,

I'm in a game right now as an Enginseer in a Penal Legion and cannot for the life of me figure out how the LR works and aquiring things through the proper channels. I'm an underworld person, but have exhausted my options at this time and would like to go to the quartermaster. So here are my details and if anyone can help me figure it out, I'd be grateful

Base Logistics rating = 16

Single Regiment

+20 active front, 1-5 years

+10 mission importance

-10 Time on front, <3 months

-10 war conditions, Violent Impasse

I have a Triplex lasgun (Rare +-20) I would like to trade for either a plasma gun flask (also Rare -20) or a Red Dot sight (Scarce -10). I have Commerce +10 also, but have failed a test against the Quartermaster in the past(dunno if that makes a difference or not). I hope I'm not forgetting anything

Thank you in advance for you help

Why don't you ask your game master? He decides it in the end anyway, no matter what the rules say.

Genererally, trading in things is not allowed, although commerce can help. It won't directly affect your logistics unless you beat the quartermaster in Commerce, but can be used as a penalty to the opposing check. Having failed a test in the past should not matter, unless you failed by a lot or insulted the quartermaster - this is up to the GM anyway. If you get another check trading in the triplex could give you a +20 or the opponent -20 on the opposed commerce check.

So the proper way to do it is this:

take 16 or whatever your LR is. with modifiers that means you only have a 6% chance of getting the flask, 16% of getting the sight. As a GM I would probably give better odds if you already have requisitioned a legal Plasma Gun, as it would make sense to provide ammo for it when they can. The way I see the test it's a mixture of what is available at any time, what is limited and only given out when appropriate, and to a certain point how friendly the quartermaster is.

With Commerce you can theoretically get a substantial bonus on the check, but still fail despite trading in the triplex. BTW always ask for the bonus to yourself instead of giving the QM the penalty, as in opposed checks it strangely seems that the losers DoS does not subtract from the winners DoS - So if you succeed by 5 DoS and the QM succeeds by 4 DoS, you still win by 5 DoS thus giving you more ammunition (5 flasks!). It's weird and I'm tempted to houserule it, but thats what the rules say.

Ahh there's a lot of questions being asked and I know he has gone over it in the past. I just feel like an idiot asking again and thought I'd see what the interwebs provided in guidance.
