It feels wrong not to have fighters.

By Krishtov, in Star Wars: Armada

As I tried the 3 VSDs, I justified not having a fighterscreen to myself with: "They are just clearing this nuisance en route, deploying the fighters would be too time consuming." But yes, it feels terribly wrong, especially when your opponent uses them...

That makes me queasy just thinking about it. VSDs have such lousy anti-fighter batteries.

and such beautiful squadron supporting equipment...

Very true. My last game it had expanded hangars and flight controllers thusly, my Interceptor/Advanced attack wing just ate my roommates X-wings for lunch.

Though I must admit, for one glorious round of firing, Wedge Antilles was a death machine. He smoked an Advanced squadron outright on his first salvo.

Vader rectified the problem.

I know this isn't the real reason that you started this thread, but as some others have said, whether or not they remain "competitive" (I'm glad that word isn't thrown around here much yet) I plan to bring them. They are half the reason for the game (the other being large capital ships to make them look cooler and "flockier"). To me it completes the aesthetic image of the game, which to me is a huge component. From a game play standpoint, I think (with only a couple games experience) that careful placement of fighters can at least draw away enemy fire from your ships.

ah, Vader, perfect for when you have to go "hmm, six blue dice are pretty impressive. Wana see something even more impressive, perhaps even...most impressive?"

Then my opponent who was pressed for time used three VSDs, sat them in the corner of the deployment zone for two turns.... no fighters. It was left up to my 6 squadrons to take out a VSD, which they were unable to do in 4 rounds. So next time I am either going to go 2 Assualt frigates, or a bunch of Y-wings, and some X-wings escort for Cap.

My suggestion is make a 300 point fleet and go first, select a mission that will make him move and play again.

To be fair, the scrum left only Fel and an Advanced squadron when all was said and done, but compared to all previous games where I saw all my TIEs exterminated, it was a glorious victory. Fel with Advanced escorts is worth his weight in gold. He dished out a load of damage without ever taking a hit himself. I was impressed by the Advanced/Interceptor combo. They killed, to a man, Wedge and five supporting x-wing squadrons, while under heavy anti-fighter fire from two escort Nebulons and the Assault Frog, surviving with two largely intact squadrons. Vader survived 3-4 rounds of concentrated fire before being taken out. Brace and bad dice rolls did not favor the rebels. The dark side was strong with him.

I also, incidentally, won the battle by 11 points, even after losing a Gladiator. I camped the space station like a boss.

Does it feel wrong to not have torpedoes or missiles in X-wing?

IMHO I think squadrons maw be under-powered for their point cost. Why take 2 squadrons when you can grab another big ship?

Because no two non-named Squadrons will buy you another ship?
