Are you afraid of the dark?

By rabid1903, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Control lists have always fascinated me, and I love Phantoms. Here's my try at a unique list that combines the two:

Shadow Squadron Pilot

- Fire Control System

- Stygium Particle Accelerator

- Mara Jade

Shadow Squadron Pilot

- Fire Control System

- Stygium Particle Accelerator

- Tactician

What do you guys think?

I've flown a similar list a few times (3 stygium sigmas with sensor jammer, 2 with intel agents and 1 with Mara Jade) and it was very fun but unforgiving. My version of it survived by getting in close and forcing bumps, which were easy with the IAs, and sensor jammer gave an added layer of survivability due to the opponent's lack of actions and Mara Jade's stress. In the end I opted to replace the MJ-sigma with Carnor Jax as I felt that she wasn't pulling her weight in my sensor jammer configuration.

The way you have the list set up, you'll have a more effective offense than me but might have trouble mitigating damage on the turns that you're decloaked. You'll also need a way to catch high-PS arc dodgers, so I would seriously recommend replacing the tacticians with intel agents. They really help you find out the best position to be in, both to escape arcs and to know where's the best place to put Mara Jade. There's also the issue that a tactician'ed enemy isn't going to get Jaded as well as she can't stack stress tokens, so there is a possibility of redundancy in that crew combination.

If you're dead set on tacticians then you can try to make sure that your first exchange is at range 2 and then try to get behind the enemy ships while maintaining the stress by keeping the MJ phantom nearby, which can probably deal a ton of damage. You'll have to watch for basically anything that has a higher pilot skill than 5 that can get out of arc (or range 2) and/or unleash hell from close range and destroy a shadow before it fires. I find that the key to flying stygium-equipped phantoms is the initial approach as sometimes you have to simply suck it up, stay cloaked at range 3 and not shoot back on the first combat turn in order to get good shots and positions later.

Whatever you fly, please let me know how it goes!

the only ones flying in the dark are the shadows :P

where's the int agent :D!?

don't think mara jade in particular is worth it. Tacts are great, but Mara's range 1 is just going to suck for your phantoms and it triggers after tacticians yet does not stack with them. Easily the weak link of the list.

I agree. Mara Jade has kind of a weak ability. If she stacked stress she'd be awesome. Rebel Captive is just so much better for the points.

Ideally I'd throw Sensor Jammer on the same ships as Tactician, but that adds up in points so fast. The only way I could think of to make that work is with:

Shadow Squadron Pilot

- Sensor Jammer

- Stygium Particle Accelerator

- Tactician

Shadow Squadron Pilot

- Sensor Jammer

- Stygium Particle Accelerator

- Tactician

Carnor Jax

- Veteran Instincts

- Stealth Device (or Autothrusters)

I always call Carnor Jax "Carnivore Jax" because it sounds cool. That'd still make it fit the theme of this list, but I am a huge fan of Phantoms so it's not ideal to me. I guess I may just have to give both a shot haha
