Austin TX Regional Championships - Dragon's Lair - 5/23/2015

By voidreturn, in X-Wing Organized Play

SATURDAY May 23rd, 2015

START TIME: 12 PM (Registration is now open and closes at 11:50 AM on the 23rd)

Pregistration can be done in the store now or the morning of the event. The entry fee is $10; payment is due at time of registration.

Tournament Structure:

We will be following the standard FFG tournament structure. We tentatively expect 5 Swiss Rounds and 3 (Top 8) elimination rounds based on attendance, with the possibility of expanding or collapsing as necessary. We will be using 75 minute time limits per match.

We will be requiring squad lists and doing random checks on all game components to ensure a competitive play environment. Please bring all required materials (Standard Damage Deck, Asteroids, tokens/dice/templates, etc) and verify that they meet the standards set out in the X-Wing Tournament Rules. Failure to have the necessary components and/or if they have been tampered with prior to a match will result in potential Match Loss or Disqualification (based on TO discretion).

The most up to date FAQ and Tournament Rules will be used.

Ship Legality:

All currently released ships and upgrades will be legal.

Prizes:

We will be awarding prizes from the FFG 2015 X-Wing Regional Championships Kit.

Additional Notes:

Please eat before rounds start, we are not planning on taking any breaks. Dragon's Lair offers drinks and snacks at the store, and you are welcome to bring food if desired, provided it is kept away from the play area/surfaces.

Hope to see everyone! Fly Casual!

ATX represent! woof!

This event capped out for registration a few days ago. Dragons Lair is hosting an event designed for 64 people but only allowing 48 players. The waitlist is full as well. I got turned away trying to register. I don't understand why you're hosting it if you don't have the room for players.

Wow! I hated this store in the first place for other X-wing shenanigans! Now they knocked out other stores for the regionals and they're only hosting 48 players out of 64! If you dont have room for the tournament then yeild it to another store that can host the full amount of players. The only people you are screwing are the players. Some things never change.

"We will be following the standard FFG tournament structure"

Really? FFG Tournament Structure for Regional Tournaments is 64 players not 48 and a full waiting list!

No one should support this store in Austin! Dragon's Lair is terrible!

First, calm down. Registration isn't closed and the event isn't designed for any number of players. Last year there were only 2 events over 64 players in the US.

Second, I just spoke with the event coordinator and he confirmed that the event is capped at 64 players total. Registration is still open, as we are not at capacity yet. If you were turned away, it was a mistake and I have been told the mistake has been corrected.

However it looks like we are getting close to capacity, so you probably don't want to wait too much longer.

Lue, I know you have a personal beef with the store, but please reel it in until you get all of the facts.

Also, side note, if you have a mat you'd like to give to the store for the event, please bring it. I have felt mats for 62 players (and my mat for the top table), but I'm sure players would like to play on better surfaces.

Also, we may be tight on space, so please bring just what you need.

Hope to see everyone there!

S1n, this update is only recent. FFG got involved earlier this morning or last night to sort this out. Registration was closed and players didnt mistakenly get turned away, it was blatant. They didnt want this event to interfere with other organized open play events going on that day. FFG products and player base are bottom shelf there compared to Wizkids and Games Workshop players.

Well since it is the way I was treated at the store, it is personal. Still, I would withdraw my claim if they do right by the players and admit at least the 64. Though I am still not supporting the store. Keep in mind it was their misinformed staff that gave out the information that it was locked at 48 players with a full waiting list. This is the same issue as the incident in January. I thought they were fixing that? But hey, it's personal.

First off Lue had the facts. The fact is several people were turned away initially because there was a cap placed on the amount of players. That is fact. Fact, people that went in to the store to sign up also got to see that it was capped at 48 players. Bottom line is there should not be a cap at a Regional event. If you look at some of the regionals world wide they had way more than 64 players attend . If your store can not allow everyone who wants to play in the regional the opportunity to play, you shouldn't host the event. It really is that simple. There are several other stores in Austin that could have hosted any amount of players. I understand you may have other events going on. DON'T schedule a regional the same day! You would think a store would want the maximum amount of players to attend. I mean you're charging $10 a person for a kit that only cost your store $60 to purchase. That's $580 profit minimum (based on 64 players) not to mention stuff you will sell to people who attend. Plus you will attract people to your store that have never been there before. Dragon's Lair should be attempting to have the highest attendance of any US regional, not limiting the amount of players.

I recently went to the Team Covenant store in Tulsa. I was surprised at how small the store actually was. They still managed to fit 58 players and said they could accommodate many more players if necessary. They did not place a cap on the amount of players. The staff at the store were supper helpful and friendly. I believe this is the type of store FFG wants to represent their games. Dragon's Lair has been the polar opposite when it comes to X-Wing. Team Covenant are in Tulsa, the population in that area is very small compared to the population centered around Austin. Austin is the closest Regional for San Antonio and Houston and close enough that Dallas folks would come down as well. Austin should have a huge attendance at a Regional.

Look I have been going to Dragon's lair for years. I have played many 40k tournaments there in the past. I really like the store. They just don't seem to care about the X-Wing community. There has been a long pattern of this. Two different TO's that would not show up to run tournaments that were posted on the DL website. Players showed up from out of town (Killeen TX) to find there were no TO's to run a tournament (that was posted on the DL website and confirmed the day prior via a phone call). Bottom line is the store separates themselves from the responsibility of the running/hosting any X-Wing tournaments. It only takes one phone call to see that. Any employee that answers the phone will tell you it is up to the TO, who is not an employee, to answer any questions about the tournament. I have been given this response on multiple occasions. I'm not blaming the TO's for not showing up. They are not employees of the store. I blame the store for not ensuring there was going to be a TO to run the event. Someone awhile back complained about DL's attitude towards the X-Wing community on the DL facebook page. Dragon's Liar quickly took down his post and issued a post of their own saying they were going to fix the issue. This mess with the 48 player cap (which is now changed to a 64 player cap) just goes to show nothing has changed.

I really hope FFG allows Austin to host the Regional again next year. I sincerely hope they allow another store, other than Dragon's Lair, to run it.

I am aware of the issues that existed with Dragon's Lair prior to my arrival. The store set the cap and there is nothing in FFG's rules that dictate they cannot do that (that I am aware of). They are selected based on community, capacity, and adherence.

Since I have moved to Austin, I have successfully run events at the store. An employee made a mistake on the number and it was corrected (for the record I am not employed by the store, just a dedicated fan of the game).

I will do everything in my power to run a successful tournament; I have been getting ready for 2 weeks. I've spent countless hours building the community and running events.

If you are attending and you do not have a good time, please speak with me and I will do what I can to remedy the experience.

s1n glad to see you taking ownership of this. I will be coming down from the DFW area and hope to have a good time. I called and registered a week ago and was told then that it was capped at 48 players. Wish I had the name to give you as to who I spoke to but alas I didn't write it down.

As far as caps I under stand there are limits to room to play. As far as $10 that will probably be on the cheap end from what some stores will charge.

Tuls, thank you (sorry to hear they made that mistake to you).

You may remember both Hida77 and I started the community at Madness a few years ago, and I try to model how I run things similar to what Hida77 does.

I hope to see you and I hope you have a good time as well!

Tournament just finished. We had 63 attendees with 1 pre-registration no-show. I will post the top 8 builds and winner details tomorrow (brain hurts, words hard).

Had a good time. Great to meet players from all over.
