Mathwing Query - Stealth Device vs Hull Upgrade vs Engine Upgrade

By jfilmer83, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I guess this is a question for the Mathwing guys out there - at what point does Stealth Device provide better value than Hull Upgrade or Engine Upgrade? I'm mathematically unsophisticated but I would figure that if you can prevent two hits with the additional dice provided by Stealth Device it would be better value than simply adding an additional point of hull? The part I'm struggling with is attempting to quantify the value of Engine Upgrade versus Stealth Device. Are there any sets of numbers out there that quantify the utility of these upgrades in comparison?

I'm currently building a Scum Boba Fett list with Lone Wolf in the EPT slot. Given the potential to re-roll two defense dice is it possible to calculate the value of Stealth Device equipped to Boba Fett versus that of Engine Upgrade? I've play tested both versions and I'm struggling to decide which is more effective. Obviously Engine Upgrade also provides an offensive advantage in addition to the capacity to avoid arcs but given the current prevalence of turrets I find it to be defensively less effective.

My current list is as follows:

Boba Fett

Lone Wolf
K4 Security Droid
Inertial Dampener
Stealth Device
Slave 1
Seismic Charge

Binayre Pirate x 4

There is a couple of points to spare so if anyone has any ideas about more effective combinations of upgrades for Boba or a more effective complement I'd love to hear about it.

Thanks!

If your ship has 2 agility or less stealth < every other upgrade. Bobba has 2 agility....I hope you catch the idea

not stealth on boba.

not hull either.

Get the drift?

also lone wolf is a little.. errr. overlapping. not necessarily bad, but scum boba already gets rerolls. id say you want to reroll about 1.5 dice every time... which makes lone wolf... a little bit high on opportunity cost. how about PTL instead? or Pred.

LW is overlapping because of rerolls but Predator isn't?

But honestly, with 4x Pirates I wouldn't run Lone Wolf. With that many ships, it'll be hard to stay out of range of all of em' to get regular use until/unless a few Zs are space dust. Lone Wolf works much better in a 2-3 ship list.

Drop the Stealth Device, as it's useless on a 2 Agility ship while Engine Upgrade is one of the single best things you can put on a Firespray. Combined with PTL and K4, you can try to use your meager amount of greens to TL, Boost, Focus every turn. If you're finding Fett's re-roll does enough for him, you could also drop the K4 for a Recon Specialist to make yourself a little hardier. Could actually go with Predator and virtually nullify the need to ever take a TL with Fett, and the need for a K4.

I'm also personally really fond of Outmaneuver on Firesprays. A lot of people don't realize it also works out their back arc, and with Engine Upgrade it isn't too difficult to boost out of arcs and place hapless enemies inside one of yours. It can be a handy way to help deal with those obnoxious high agility ships.

Sorry yeah totally wasn't thinking. Predator overwhelmingly overlaps. Hardly gives you any useful addition. Lone wolf slightly overlaps but the defensive roll and when you're not in R1 is really helpful.

then give boba fleet officer and youll be rerolling at any range all your dice

Why would you give Fett Fleet Officer? Focus tokens are more valuable on him than they are the Pirates. With Fett's rerolls combined with Lone Wolf, it's hard to beat a Recon Specialist on him.

I tried this combo out last week and I hated it. I probably flew it suboptimally, though. The problem was that I could never seem to get shots off at my target. Granted, my target was Super Dash ...

Fleet Officer is Imperial Only. You can put it on Fett -- just not on this Fett.

Corrections:

Flight Instructor on Fett...i made the mistake of typing fleet officer before the caffeine hit my veins

Thanks for the feedback guys - this gives me something to try out in my games this weekend. I'm currently weighing up what is the best thing to partner with Boba so I would appreciate any ideas that you might have. The Binanyre Pirates are useful in adding some bulk to the squad but they do lack a bit of punch.

really boba is so good, almost anything works.

2 Ys.

4 Zs.

A HWK and a Syck.

Palob i hear is a fun choice.

How about something like this? Our Regionals are set down for late July - early August so that will give me plenty of time to experiment and get familiar with it.

Boba Fett

Push the Limit

K4 Security Droid

Inertial Dampener

Engine Upgrade

Slave 1

Palob Goldahi

Opportunist

Blaster Turret

Recon Specialist

N'Dru Suhlak

Lone Wolf
