So few Star Wars RPG events at GenCon 2015

By mczulu72, in Star Wars: Age of Rebellion RPG

There were so few spot available for any of the Star Wars RPG events at GenCon 2015 and they sold out very quickly. Is this because they want to gauge demand? Is it possible they'll add more? How have they handled it in the past?

Thanks!

Clearly no one cares. :(

Sorry. For some reason, a few posts have not been showing up as new (was already marked as read).

I recall last year the GenCon games sold out in seconds. Not sure how long they sold out this year. Every so often, a spot will come available as people change plans. So be sure to check often. ALso, you can try looking for other FFG star war RPG events. There should be a few being run by average Joes. If you keep your ear to the ground some will even be running pick-up games.

Finally, buy a hand-full of generic tickets and show up to the event early. I've been in a few of these games to know that at least one guy drops out. Make sure your first on the list to get in a game. If you show up early enough, you're bound to play something.

Pretty big demand and they're busting out Force and Destiny this year, which many people have been clamoring for. I doubt they'll add any more.

Bear in mind they probably also have only so many people to run RPG events, from Star Wars to Warhammer 40K and plenty in between. And it may be case of not all their GMs are familiar enough with a given system to run it.

I've been at cons were somebody was told "here, run this module for this system" with the GM having next to no clue on how the system worked. Heard about one case where a "sanctioned" GM for D&D4e Encounters was botching things up, down, left, right, and all over the place, causing a lot of people to bail on D&D entirely because of that one clown.

So take your pick, would either have only a few events run by folks that know what they're doing, or a bunch of events and a good chance it'll be run by someone with zero clue of what they are doing?

Good points. I don't know how many good people they have, but there are only ever three events going on at a given time. And the way it's scheduled the most any one person could run is two a day. So they only have three good people to run Star Wars RPG? Certainly I don't want any clowns running any games (personally I love clowns but they DO scare a lot of people) but I would hope that there are more than three good SW GMs out there...just sayin'.

It does seem the presence at conventions is sparse at best! Origins had one Age of Rebellion game this year. (Got in it...yea!). As for GenCon, we got lucky to get two tickets by CHANCE. All were sold out and two popped up while looking for others. Spot checks just keep showing sold out.

I am thinking about running one of the beginner games (EoE or AOR) on Wed. Night. Putting out a shingle and see who shows up to play....Grin. May not be the best GM on the planet, but it would be fun.

Thinking about doing the same thing at Origins this year as well.

I'll likely be at GenCon, and I'll likely be running pick-up games for those interested.

Fuerhelm and KRKappel,

Our (beginner) group would love to take one of you up on your offer. There are at least six of us, potentially seven so we might have too many players but we could figure that out on our end. We'll be getting into Indy sometime on Wednesday afternoon and would be willing to play Wednesday night, or we could coordinate some other day/evening as well.

One more thing. While our group hasn't played a lot of RPGs, we are gamers and we're all pretty laid back people. None of us take winning/losing too seriously. We might have a 13 year old girl with us, but she's turning into quite a gamer as well. And I'd love to introduce RPGs to her.

So thanks again for your offer. Hopefully we can set something up.

I was at Comicpalooza in Houston over Memorial Day Weekend. There was only one Star Wars RPG session each day.

Try contacting the event organizers to volunteer to GM more sessions.

Would be happy to get a game in with your entire group. FFG Star Wars is an amazing game for groups with little experience, as it can be taught very fast, and is very simple to understand. Follow me on Twitter and/or Facebook (see my sig) and we can either coordinate something for your entire group, or you can just keep on the look out for when I post interest in running a pick-up game. I'll likely be doing a ton though, since I have no official duties I'm aware of this time at GenCon.

I'm running the Force and Destiny Beginners Game at FanExpo in Toronto this year. Not GenCon, but most GMs for these things are not actually sanctioned by the companies, though sometimes they put out a call for them.
